@jonnylieberman: and going back to the Jet vs Veyron comment that someone made as a rebuttal to my "I prefer performance measurements that involve active used of the steering wheel and brake pedal," I checked out the Top Gear episode. One massive braking point and a U-turn are hardly a measure of handling and braking ability. Just the fact that they got the Hamster to drive the car, instead of the Stig, should give you an idea of how that contest was a glorified drag race. Hardly a test of what a well-rounded (in regard to overall performance) supercar is made of.

The Veyron would probably get its ass handed to it by the top few cars on the TG leader board, and VW probably realizes this, and that's why they won't let them put it out on the course for comparative testing.

It was his way or 'No way'. The major aero problem the drivers had was solved during a test session he missed. Peter Falk and Helmut Bott both told JWA's John Horsman that Piech would never have allowed him to basically hacksaw the rear of the car the way he did, because he didn't have the theoretical background. The 917K is a triumph of (track testing) experience over theory.

Which brings me to Gordon Murray.

When the ground effects came came, everybody thought at first that the more airflow you got under the car, the better it would be. Colin Chapman said that his Lotus 80 made the World Championship-winng 79 look like 'an Imperial bus'. Murray followed the same thinking as Chapman for the BT48... but he also listened to his drivers. They complained that the car was so instable that Lauda had felt the front wheels lift off the ground in Argentina. Murray realized the theory was wrong and changed his car accordingly.

If you asked me who would I hire to design my dream supercar, between Ferdinand Piech and Gordon Murray, the answer would be Gordon Murray.

The Veyron is impressive but we'll look back on its blinged-out interior/exterior and laugh at its painfully dated rap-video styling. Look at pictures of Gordon Murray at the time he made the F1-he looks like George Harrison's grungy younger brother. But he created one of the most timeless, precision-built cars of all time, let alone the cesspool that is the early 1990s. That's why the styling is still relevant; but for the size of the rims the F1 could have been made yesterday.

Any arguments touting the fact that you can have a conversation/sip a latte/take a nap in a Veyron--and THAT's why it's better--only underscore the Bugatti's pretentiousness and completely miss the point. The F1 has a super-light CD player, better luggage room, and more passenger space anyways. As I recall, Peter Egan said the air-conditioning was terrible, though. I guess the criteria for selecting the best minivan don't apply to supercars after all.

It's the difference between form and function, substance and superficiality that wins the F1 for me. The same reason Malcom Sayer insisted he was an aerodynamicist instead of a stylist; that the attention to the XKE's aerodynamics was what made it a beautiful car, not that its curves happened to make Sophia Loren blush. Not to mention the F1 needs a gold-lined engine bay like a rocket ship and held the title for 11 years. How much street cred do you need? Is the Veyron faster? Of course. But it held the fastest title for what, six months until the SSC Aero took it?
At any rate, if you want a fast and tacky turbocharged car, they're a dime a dozen (see "Callaway Corvette" for more details). Me, I'll keep on admiring the F1 as the supreme supercar. (/rant)

I can't vote for either one. the Bugatti is awesome, and very unattainable for me right now (I am a realist). If I had the funds to buy one, I would still go with a Roller instead. Now for the F1, which I think is not only awesome, but historic as well. The three seats are pure genius, and it was at the very top of the food chain for almost a decade. And the F1 is probably worth more than the Veyron right now, because of the number of cars produced. Again, I think if I had the scratch (and my 10 Houses around the world, a 200 ft. Ocean Going Yacht, and a bank account with at least a billion dollars) I think I'd still go for the Roller, with a fantasy garage that rivals Leno (without the mid engined monsters).

The F1 was built to be the best car ever made, not just the fastest, or the one with the most horsepower, but the best drivers car you could make if money wasn't an object.

Both are timeless, but while the veyron will be remembered for it's audacity and the incredible engineering that made it possible, I think the F1 will be remembered as the better car.

If I needed a car that I would be driving every day, I'd want a car that was able to cruise well at freeway speeds without much loss of comfort -- that's why I chose the Bugatti. According to James May, even at 250mph the car still felt stable and really easy to drive.

Now, if I already had a daily driver and just needed a "toy", F1 all the way. While the Bugatti might accelerate faster, I really wonder if it would be faster than the F1 around a track. Not to mention, the F1 just embodies a purity of spirit that you don't get with most other cars.

What it comes down to is whether or not the car would be my only car or my second car. Only car? Bugatti hands down. Second car? F1 baby. Preferably the long tail LM version for extra exclusivity and better high speed handling characteristics.

But, after everything I'd read and heard, seeing it drive around with all four tires on the ground was very nearly disappointing. I don't know what more I was expecting, but I do know that for me the car had become more than a car, it was something like a myth, maybe a religion. Something so perfect that it couldn't possibly exist to be touched and trodden upon like other real objects.

Who actually wins? In the case of Kung-Fu movies, the hero (the good guy) always wins, with a pretty straight-forward plot.

McLaren wins this match in my book because it looks cooler and is closer to the philosophy of Colin Chapman (even though by no means is the McLaren a light car). And the fact that you can have two babes riding both sides of you is a plus...

Maybe if I was looking for comfort, ultimate speed, and the latest gadget/technology, I would choose the Veyron, but I will stick with my old-school Kung-Fu movies.

The roadgoing non/LM version was a very refined car, with a Kenwood CD system specifically designed for sound-quality and lightness. Certainly, my very brief journey in one, it actually reminded me of a 750il, until he floored it.

And it had air-con, too. Very definitely not a POS as you so eloquently put it.

Incidentally, as you may have guessed, I vote Bugatti. Yes it's awesome in every way, but it bloody well should be. This is what a car should be like if it costs the reputed £5,000,000 per car too build (that figure probably includes program and research costs, but apparrently each car is sold at an insane loss).

The McLaren was built with an ethos, as befits a Gordon Murray brainchild. Weight was saved in every area. Magnesium and titanium alloys were everywhere. The Bugatti needs all its 1000hp because it's so heavy.

It's worth mentioning that, if they really wanted to, McLaren could probably have bunged four turbo's on it and made well into four figure power, but ultimate power wasn't the point.

The McLaren was the living example of lots of separate systems working together in perfect symbiosis to create the most visceral ever supercar experience.

The Bugatti is just another very very flash car, borne of corporate prestige and "chip on shoulder.". It will always be amazing, but it isn't clever like the F1.

When it started we all looked at each other and smiled. I said "I'd kill my whole family for that car." In retrospect, I feel bad for saying that.
