Another item of note. I hear in European cities, especially in congested areas, it's rude to put on your handbrake if you're parallel parked on a flat street, because apparently it's commonplace to just push the cars in front and behind you to make more room, as parking spots open and close throughout the day.

So, what we need is a brake that we can turn on and off easily...

First time: I'm driving across a mall parking lot. Hey! That pickup truck is moving - but there's no one inside! Thankfully, it was drifting in a slow curve, far away from other cars. I hop out and stop the rolling truck by hand. It isn't running; someone simply didn't bother to put it in gear, and probably didn't set the brake very well. OK, I've stopped the truck. Now what? I rummage in the bed and find something I can wedge behind a wheel. I left the pickup crosswise in a parking spot, with a note on the windshield. I hope the absent driver learned something.

Second time: I'm walking the dog in my neighborhood and notice an older Cherokee parked in front of a house - that is just beginning to drift down a hill. I had just begun rolling, so I stopped it by hand (why do I keep stumbling into such things?), and found a nearby tree branch to wedge under a wheel. I knocked on the door, and will always treasure the surprised look I got when telling the news. A kid had parked it a few moments before I came along. Had I delayed just a few more seconds, it would have picked up speed and very likely would have hit a house.

The funny thing in situations where you do that is that your initial reaction is to press down harder. I mean, you must not be pressing hard enough on the brakes, or the car wouldn't be speeding up, now would it! It is only after the second press that you realize, you're pressing the gas.

Had that happen to me once, but I got my foot over to the brake fast enough... looks like this guy didn't.

But I've been there before under slightly different circumstances about 15 years ago. My old 1964 Fiat 124 had a pretty weak parking brake. Since I lived in Sicily at the time, it was nearly impossible to avoid parking on hills. Set the parking brake one night but forgot to put the car in gear before exiting. Next morning my car was smashed up against back end of a neighbor's similarly old and decrepit Fiat 126 parked about a car length down the slope, which in turn had been pushed into the trash dumpsters which were maybe another 15-20 feet away at the bottom of the hill. My car had some fresh black scuffs on the chrome rear bumper, so someone must have bumped it while trying to park behind it, just hard enough to overcome the brake's holding power and start a chain reaction. Only minor damage to my car, and the 126 got it a bit worse in the form of some new dents both front and rear to compliment the already existing ones. Given the age and overall conditions of the cars, it's not like the new scars hurt their appearance or resale value much. Both cars were still on the road a year later when I moved back Stateside.

Unfortunately managing not only to kill the engine off he activated the steering lock and dropped the keys to the floor whilst coasting at a nice 60mph towards some rather challenging corners. After putting it into park at that speed we had a trashed engine, skid marks on the hot vinyl a slightly clunky tri-matic transmission and a long walk for Meat Pies.

My first car, the old family '70 Ford wagon, got a metallic sticker sent to us for the dash due to an NHTSA action, reminding us to do so as well.

Apparently, that Ford tranny had a habit of slipping from Park into Reverse, and backing over drivers who were checking their mailbox or reaching out to scoop up the morning newspaper. If I recall, many fatallities resulted, prompting the sticker (but no recall...!?!).

I'd also like to point out that the person in the video should not have a driver's license. Where did they learn how to drive? Florida? Well, that's where I got my license, the morning my family moved to Vermont. Upon taking up residence in the Green Mountain State (where Driver's Ed is part of HS curriculum), I actually learned how to drive. My teacher would do all sorts of stuff like holding down the throttle with a stick and going "your throttle is stuck! what do you do!?" Man, I would love to take that class again.

1st was in high school, I was warming up my Jeep and the parking brake (stupid pedal-style) wasn't on quite as well as I thought. I look out the window to see it slowly rolling across the driveway, backwards down an embankment and bouncing off of the little hut that covered up the well. The cool part was I just put it in 4lo and drove out.

2nd was offroad. I got out to spot a guy, and again the brake wasn't on like I thought. I successfully managed to run back, dive in the car and hand-stomp the brake.

Still, they can keep skis from careening down the slopes by themselves. With all the electronic gizmos in today's cars, you'd think they could identify situations in which the wheels are turning without anyone sitting in the driver's seat and, automatically apply the emergency brake - even if the ignition has been cut. I can't think of any context in which you would want the car to continue rolling, but it would be easy enough to deactivate such a feature manually.

It turns out I forgot to pull my parking brake, and the street in front of me was at a slight incline so the car rolled down about a block and stopped at a curb. luckily it hit a curb and not a car when it stopped. whew! And thank god nobody was outside watching this!

I have this same problem with my Cherokee every spring. Mostly because I burn up the handbrake in the winter months snow drifting around at night, and it always needs a little TLC by the time things start to thaw. This driving method, mad thought it is, answers the Cherokee's tendency to understeer dangerously in ice and snow. I just choose to answer with dangerous oversteer. Whatever.
