their goal is to sell 200 cars a month?? It's got to cost six-figures then if they expect to sell so little because Toyota sells 200 Camry's every 4 hours...

@tmkforever: I think what he was clarifying for me is that this is the top of the heap Nissan sportscar and that a better, faster Nissan "Skyline" isn't coming out for America. Calling the Japanese thing a skyline even though its a G37, in other words not the top of the heap, confused me a bit. He cleared things up just fine. Thanks Jonny

This car makes sense in Japan like Ghosn makes sense in Japan. In Japan the guy is a superhero for performance in saving Nissan from oblivion. In Japan the Skyline is a superhero for it's performance on the track.

Here and anywhere else they're amazing performers, but still little oddities from a company that makes the Sentra.

I find it endearing for both. I love Carlos and Nissan, but to the traditional high-end sports car buyer, they mean nothing. And that is one of many reasons the the traditional high-end sports car buyer is a fucking asshole.

Oh man, somehow i have a feeling you're going to be going in more than once every 12 months...

It's got a dual clutch setup. So we can stop worrying Nissan have done something completely moronic with the transmission.

"The Nissan GT-R features a low coefficient of drag of 0.27, with high front and rear downforce, which provides the GT-R with enhanced grip in all weather situations, while also enhancing fuel efficiency."

So THAT'S why it looks so ugly: really really aerodynamic. At least that's some sort of justification. I bet some rich idiot is going to ruin it by buying one and sticking a "racing" wing on it that wrecks the drag coefficient AND doesn't improve the downforce. Oh well, that's how it is with these things.

Now they're just putting adjectives in front of statistics. Does it also feature "awesome" doors that let you enter and exit the car? How about "totally rad" rearview mirror which lets you see where you've been?

Although considering some supercars the rearview mirror part would probably be not that silly :)

I'll hold judgement when I see one in person, but the initial impression is function over form. Sure it might be great, but I couldn't even imagine driving something that looks like this on the street.

What is a "plasma-sprayed bore" anyway? (buried in the press release).

@jonnylieberman: This all-new GT-R is not a Skyline at all.... its 100% GT-R. That's why its not called a Skyline GT-R like the previous models. It resides on its own new platform and only shares a handful of parts with other cars. The engine and drivetrain are all bespoke and the frame and suspension are not based on the Japanese Skyline (American G37 coupe).

@pdxgrease: How could you call this a trashy car for trashy people? Did you even watch the live release video footage? Carlos Ghosn spent a good 15 minutes describing the philosophy behind this car. It is PURE PASSION and it is an exercise of form follows function. I believe it is a natural evolution of the legendary Skyline platform interpreted in a new 21st century way. I think the lines are graceful, but powerful and not overstated. It is designed to knock the socks of almost any supercar twice or 3 times its value while still being able to transport 4 adults around town to the symphony. Its even got a spacious trunk, and of course the ATTESA ET-S AWD system allows the car to drive in virtually ANY conditions (rain, snow, etc.).

@Rust-MyEnemy: One of the big selling points of the old Skylines was that they flatter the driver enormously; I expect this to be no different. A 911, even the more user-friendly current generation, will probably be a much-harder 10/10ths car than this. Of course purists will say that's the point of a 911...

As for looks, I think this is just freakin awesome; it fulfils the Clarkson, "it should appeal to the 10-year old in me" supercar mantra to a tee. All it needs is lasers and vertical take-off and we're set.

Thing is, 80% (made up statistics ftw!) of people who buy this won't have nearly the skillz to approach its Porsche-digesting capabilities, so the ultra-performance tag is only useful on paper. That being so, why put up with the general Nissan-ness of it all? Yeah, it looks neat in a bespoilered, Gotham Racing, Gran Turismo kinda way, but is it art?

Being that I (being ever so honest) could never use all that performance, I might as well trade some of it for ambience and beauty. So while you're all powersliding your GT-Rs into telephone poles, i'll be just behind you in my Maserati GT.

This car has the ability to make almost everything else on the road instantly look like it came from another decade. Super future styling! It would look more at home at the Tokyo Audi Forum than the current inhabitants. In fact, it kinda looks like it's eating (or giving birth to) an Auto Union member from the full frontal view.

Agree that the overall form lacks cohesion and some introduced tension in the lines is not addressed in a pleasing way.

That said, with a GT wing, semi-gloss black paint and some aero diffusers front and rear, it could get real mean.

there are some cool lines. most nissans have some redeaming lines but the overall cohesiveness of the form is not there. With a 911 you get something that will still look good in twenty years. This car is a big gimic aesthetically. Every part of the car has its own theme. The mouth of a vag, the lights of a nissan, the butt of a corvette, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. This is a trashy car for people who need to put calvin pissing on porsche stickers on the back window. At least porsche turbo driver's have some taste even if they are a millisecond slower.

Dude, I understand that thing is a beast on The Ring, but it's freakin ugly! The R34 GT-R was nice looking, even the old R32 GT-R looked great. This car is butt ugly.

It's a toss up for top ugly.

Car. Of. The. Year. There's no single car right now that I want to drive more; even the R8 comes in second. I got to drive a 2007 C6 last week and while I had a blast, all I could think about when I saw it was how much I want to drive the GT-R. I live in Nashville so you can bet I'm going to be calling in every favor I can to try to get Nissan North America to let me drive one whenever they make it to the States.

I'd have to agree with the statement that they didn't seek to produce a beautiful shape, but a distinctive and functional one.

On a side note, has Audi set the bar for grills like BMW did for flame surfacing? Mitsubishi and Nissan are the first to catch the fast train to blacked-out-trapezoids-ville, who's up next?
