Avoiding the temptation to drift off in the PCH direction:

Start with something with raceable AWD and a strong chassis. Maybe significant body damage so you can get it cheap enough (free?) to also afford some stiffer springs, an additional motorcycle engine, some urethane skirting and a high-flow turbofan.

Anybody remember the Chaparral 2Js? Lamm probably doesn't (yet) have a rule against active downforce. How about an Audiapparal?

Although, keeping with the spirit of Jalop...Ford Falcons, Futuras especially, are the hippest car on the road, and the Jalop mechanics know their Fords, apparently. A strong candidate if you do something crazy enough to it. How hard would it be to produce a '64 coupe Futuramino? Falcon Wagonamino? Attach wings with biplane engines and a Lamborghini LM002 machine gun (easy, easy junkyard , this is America) to it, with Starion rims and a yellow paintjob? Wanky the Boost- and Oil Temp-cat?

@lanispet: The Cherochero might work ok, if you just cut the coil springs way down, and hack up the bump stops.

The Eagle would definitely handle better, however. At least it has IFS, and some of them were AWD (rather than 4WD). Make an Eaglemino, see how low you can get the suspension, and it might have a fighting chance.

Of course, there was an Eagle I used to see in Rochester that I once stumbled on via google, and the guy's site had autocross pictures! Yes, he three-wheeled through corners, on a lift and 31"s.

I say 1992 Buick Roadmaster Wagon, caminoized, with a junkyard turbo on the 350 v8. Hand-made 1.5" sway bars to give you loads of oversteer. I have the car lined up so it's just a question of prep work.

No matter what, however, short of a DAF Turbo Twin, Jalopnik needs to enter something and obscure with the back cut off to form a camino/-chero. It's only right. Poor parts availability on any continent is a plus, as is a convoluted drivetrain. I'm thinking some manner of Citroen-amino. The $500 budget might go all to hell, but if you're docked less than 350 laps, you'll be ok.
