Great write up!

The PVC 'snorkel' was a doubtfully affective air ram. Some thought it also added to the Star-Wars Snowspeeder theme.

To all those considering participation, don't let anything stop you. It was my first race experience and the most fun I've ever had, and I've had some good days. We scraped up 3 drivers and entered a fictional 4th. Many lost interest when we started talking $ for role-cage, but now we have enough interest for at least 2 teams.

Proud to say our car was an actual $200 DOA klunker with no 5th gear and a blown head gasket. Ater repairing the gasket and a used wheelset it was just chopping up the exhaust and intake. I wouldn't waste money just to place higher. It's plenty of fun within the constraints. Many over budget cars didn't even finish. (Cars are penalized laps by the judges for going over budget.)

To those critical of the event and sportsmanship, you're nuts. On the track you have no friends of course, and some drivers were graduates of the bumper-car school of driving, but I didn't see anyone taking this race too seriously. How can you? Everyone had the time of their life. It was also a riot to spectate.

Came back to the track, and went from 60th place to 20th place then they blew ANOTHER STOCK MOTOR.

Went back to the shop and swap another motor, came back very last minute and got 40th place.

That's not too bad.

The contestents were mostly veteran track junkies. A show of hands at the "Drivers Meeting" revealed there were very few newbies of wheel to wheel racing or of Altamont speedway. THe overall spirit was great but there were the predictable a-holes. A must see event if you are any kind of gear head.

For our #9 finish, this 92 Mx6 had 0 downtime other than changing drivers and cars. I have no doubt that fewer than five cars can say that. What makes that more amazing, is that this car ran the July 07 event and lost its drain plug TWICE. No oil? NO Problem, unless you are one of the other cars on the track sliding off at the hair pin.. We were 45th, dammit!

The 1987 Cavalier Wagon was on its THIRD Lemons this year, yes we were dumb enough to ship it to Detroit and got 4th at Flat Rock.

The July Lemons was WAY less of a demo derby than this one. Holy crap did our car get beat up. That said, it was fun as hell and we'll be there in December.

I will never forgive myself for missing the 2006 inaugural event.

The $500 limit was seriously violated, and the 735IL that got destroyed certainly deserved it.

Jay Lamm (organizer dude) is kinda the Bill France of crapheap racing, and he's still adjusting the levels of winked-at cheating until there's a median between seriously oversubscribed and no one showing up because is too expensive/turned into no fun like every other racing series ever.

I think the current probably $2-3000 cars getting under the wire format is working. There was clearly a huge amount of sweat equity in some of those cars.
And a couple of connecting rods hanging out of the engines...

Perfect choice for classes where you're limited to stock wheel size.

Is this going to be around the same date next year? I.E. between racing and ski seasons? I could find my way to Altamont if it meant a $100 share of said Jalopnik entry. We just need 2 more suckers, er, I mean drivers if Caveman and Culberson are in.... Now I'm wishin' I hadn't sold mom's 86 NYer turbo for $500 two years ago. That thing'd be sweet with alcohol injection, junkyard intercooler, a LeBaron "sport" suspension swapped in, and an angle iron rear sway bar. Turbo lag be dammned! My 8" wide 3000Gt rims would even fit after a home fender rolling/smashing job.

True story, had the application for the Detroit event all sent in.... Had a couple of buddies all set to drive.... Had the car as well, a 1993 Suzuki 4 Door 2WD (Reap Wheel Drive!) Sidekick, New Head installed, 5 Speed Stick, New Shocks, in other words almost all set.

One by one, all of my so called friends dropped out.... so I had the local salvage yard just haul the damn thing away.... and that was that.

Probably will never try that again unless I get some new friends....

The 04 Volvo sedan that placed 22nd is not a turbo, hence the slowness factor, but the car did very well. The Subaru wagon was plenty fast, and I believe it had faster lap times than all of the top 3 cars, it was in to pits a lot with mechanical problems, and body pieces falling off.

Two footnotes:

1) While most of the competitors did leave on trailers or were abandoned at the track, we drove home in our entry, the 4th-place finishing Motoring J Style MR2. It had no clutch, which made merging from 580 onto 80 in Emeryville rather nerve-racking, but we got it home under its own power nonetheless

2) The 35th place finishing Alfetta GT is the California Mille team (not California Mills). They did awesome for most of the race (this car finished 6th in the July '07 race), but it began a slow death on Sunday morning. It's also a 3-time veteran of the Double 500 road rally...

Big decision is: American iron or Honda engineering? Maybe once the options are photo'ed, we could do a poll.

Person in question was all set to do the '06 Kalamazoo (MI) Raceway [www.kalamazoospeedway.com] 4 Cylinder Enduro series ...killer car, cage, sponsors all lined up...but the Enduro series overlord would not allow exception to the '06 14"-max-diameter rim rule despite SAABs always using 15" or more rims since their '47 inception. By '07 when they apparently changed the rules (never called, never wrote) to include 15" rims, the wind was out of that sail...

I'm thinking an N/A car does better in these things than a turbo'd...more low end grunt to get around obstacles.
