Hey, I'm German, so if anyone is allowed to fiddle with tradition, it's me ;)

It might be heresy, but it just tastes good, so I don't care.

In any case, I prefer Leberkäs to sausages, but you have to go further south than Frankfurt to get that. If you ever get to south Germany (e.g. when you pick up your new Porsche/Mercedes/Audi/BMW), go to a butcher and order a Leberkäs-Wecken (Swabia) or a Leberkäs-Semmel (Bavaria). You surly won't regret it...

For those keeping score, original Frankfurters are made near Frankfurt while those in the Frankfurt style are made elsewhere. In any case, they are made from 100% smoked pork. Germans are nothing of not sticklers for obscure medieval food & drink regulations. Just ask any German you run into about the Reinheitsgebot of 1516 if you want an earful.

By contrast, Wiener (Vienna sausages) are made with up to 30% beef and less smoke. Either way, mustard is the condiment of choice for anyone over the age of, like, 5.

@ Benztown: philistine indeed. You probably think Wiener Schnitzel comes on a schtick!

@ Avarno: that would be Dreckschaufel and Felsensteak, respectively. You can also order a sandwich called Strammer Max, but make sure its on the menu or you make get dirty looks :-x

For anyone in Frankfurt, you have to ask around for two restaurants. Ask where you can get the drückshuvel or something like that, it's basically a giant metal shovel full of pork and meat and veggies. Awesome.

The other place serves "steak on a rock". Try it out. Amazing. Comes to you rare on a slab of granite, and you slice it off and cook it on the granite as long as you like.

And look for the secret "X-men" trap door on the grounds outside of the Auto show. Can't miss it.
