The NSU if you want a challenge. I had my brother who lives in Ohio look at the one you have pictured. It really is not as bad as it looks just light surface rust I bid on the car but was out bid at the end. I have a 65 spider that is real rough if you want a real project. I also have a sport prinz. I plan on working on it first because it atleast has pistons that any machine shop can work on. got nos pistons off E-bay already just need cylinders sleeved. One day the wankel will run again! It just takes money and time.

The great thing with the NSU is that you'll never expect it to run, so you'll never be disappointed. Just a 'project' to work on at your leisure for the rest of your life. Beats diggin' ditches...

The Jensen, however, is a car that, at some point, you'd want to have not only up and runnin', but actually being used as real transportaion. Since that will never happen, this is the true hell-car.

BTW, is the word 'breaks' in the Jensen ad a misspelling, a Freudian slip, or the owner boldly telling it like it is?

Ordinarily British PCH trumps German PCH, but this is a clear exception... A seized, low-production, 40-year-old rotary from an automaker that most people in this country have never even heard of? So rare and oddball that you couldn't forgive yourself for scrapping it even as you curse every missing, rusted, broken part that you will never ever be able to find a replacement for?

It's gotta' be the NSU. You could easily drop a Mazda mill in there and nobody'd be the wiser. Plus it's a drop-top! Interceptors are nice and all, but where's the challenge there? I mean you can walk into pretty much any Pep Boys and pick up most of your replacement parts.

I have to agree with the dawg. I think we need a re-definition of the rules. My definition of hell is a car that, no matter how much you do, is never finished. A sysyphian project that requires doing and redoing ad nauseum...and you never really have that much of a car no matter what...like my Studebaker. In that case, NSU all the way.

There is just so much wrong with the NSU posting, never mind the NSU itself. To wit:

It comes with bags of random parts that may or may not belong to it! The only restoration work done thus far is "light sweeping". The interior is in "NSU bags" somewhere else on the farm. And, probably thanks to jalopnik bidding has gone crazy in the last 12 hours!!

NSU. Because there is so much upside potential for you even if you fail.

I voted interceptor because I've wanted a car that was an "interceptor" ever since I saw mad max when I was 9 or whatever. Now while the NSU will indeed be hell, from my view the rust doesn't look THAT bad. At least the body just has surface rust...The motor's obviously done though. I guess junkman will let us know how it goes.

Do you colonials attach monetary value to interesting number plates?

Just thought you might be able to finance the project by selling the JNSN MK3 plate that come with the car.

The NSU owner has clear photographic documentation of the hell to expect.

The Jensen, though, is still basically a mystery. An unknowable hell, which might well only have 3 wheels.

From a pure hell standpoint I'd go with the NSU. It wouldn't be total hell with the Jensen because it has some potential. I believe the NSU would be less than the sum of its nonexistent parts but I love the idea of a rust bucket with a new interior.

I voted for the NSU for a few simple reasons: the Interceptor is visually distinct and uses mechanicals that are largely junkyard standards. It was built in a country by people who speak essentially the same language I do.

The NSU, when it's completely finished, will be mistaken for a Fiat. Maybe a Karmann-Ghia. Its owner's manual is likely to include the word "Gotterdamerrung," which I will use several times during the car's restoration. And even if I were to completely replace the engine with all-new components - which cannot be had even if your name is Jesus - the engine will still run like a sieve, blowing exhaust gases from every available seam like the Johnstown Flood.

The NSU is the ultimate Hell Car: rare as hell, intellectually challenging, impossible to finish, and not worth the effort.

But the Interceptor just does it right for me. Megasquirt, single small turbo, and you've got one hell of an awesome machine. Replace all the old wiring with real rat's nests. What does that wiring operate, anyway? It's a 1976!

Hate to say it but I actually restored a 73 Interceptor that was rode hard and put away wet for many years. Didn't run when I got it. 6 years and I don't want to think about how much money later, I had to sell it due to financial problems. It was a wrench (literally). At least you can get parts for the Interceptor and the motor is easy to work on... that NSU looks like hell. For reals.

@jonnylieberman: I've had a half dozen Wankel Spiders, including some worse than this and none have had over 10k miles. I had a perfect 9k mile example that was on its second engine rebuild.

As far as how I'm voting, I'm the current high bidder on the NSU Wankel and have been most of the auction.

Jensen freakin interceptor, it runs, it drives, its a Jensen Interceptor what more do you want, wiring is for pansies, we don't want no freakin power windows, or things like that, if it doesn't have a manual go get one, and I imagine there is all sorts of ability to hot up that 440, and it comes down to what would you want more, a kick ass interceptor, or a nsu wankel, both are very cool, but the interceptor is just more cool, get rid of the yellow paint it dark british racing green, or dark blue, mmm the Jensen just seems so much easier, but if were to bother with the wiring, it would be hell, but maybe like the first level, virtuous pagans, but more likely the second, the wankel would require a whole umpteenbazillion levels of hell, just so it could go on the very lowest of those hells, i don't know if we're supposed to vote for what we would want, or which car is more hellish, or what car will be more rewarding in the end?, what the hell are we supposed to choose? I'm just going to pick what I which car I would rather submit myself too...

the Interceptor isn't 4WD. You're thinking of the Jensen FF, which was 4WD. It had two of those vents on each side and rode a little higher.

NSU for me. I hope someone in the Raleigh area buys it and gets it running just so I can see it on the road (or tow truck).

I brought the Jensen back to within 1 vote of the NSU! The Jensen has the whole shooting-brake thing going for it as well as a fugly yellow.

Is this a trick question? Is there something cool about the NSU that I'm unaware of? Something that's supposed to supercede a Mopar 440 and four-wheel drive and make me ignore those laser shots that seem to have hit every body panel?

Normally I would dismiss the NSU because it's not as much hellish as it is suicidal. If a car can't ever run again, period, it's not really a fair contest. The car has to have an outside, remote, fleeting like a dream upon waking, chance of restoration. That chance, of course, is in Hell.

But, I will go for the NSU because it would be like discovering a lost civilization.

For pure Hell I would have to say NSU. The nephew is talking as if the thing is in pretty good condition but the photos all show abundance of rust and dirt, and it looks very scary. I could almost smell it.

I'm trying to figure out that first line on the Interceptor description...Do the motor, brakes, and transmission all work fine? Or the motor breaks but the transmission works fine?
