Weight engineering should come before everything else, not something you later struggle to shave off in high-priced RS/Superleggera models. Good for performance, great for handling, good for the planet.

The boxer or flat layout puts most of the engine mass closer to your ankles and a V configuration puts most of that mass above your knee.

2nd dumb question: Heritage aside, with that big air intake manifold mounted over the pistons, is there any packaging advantage for the flat-6 over a V6? I've never seen the Porsche engine sans car, but it looks like (at least in other pictures) it'd be the same height as a DOHC V6. Or am I just stupid today. Which is a distinct possibility.

If they were to put awd and a tip-tragic in it then it would just be a hotted up turbo. I personally love the new look and can't wait till we get one in the dealership to pdi it.

Still, a lot of purpose built drag cars do use autos. Certain aspects of this cars performance could probably be improved with AWD and a 6 or 7 speed autobox, but at a certain point the question becomes whether you want a car that you drive or an amusement park ride that you get strapped into while it performs some pre-programmed task.

@brandegee: They put this engine in Caymans.


@grantmp: Picture 1 is the air intake manifold, it would look even more evil if they included some of the turbo plumbing.
