@ Shapeshifter: Have you ever felt compelled to curse an R32's portly mass as the brake fluid boils after only six laps? I have. More gadgets = more weight. The Skylines I've encountered have been one-lap wonders: mediocrity sets in as the brakes and tires cook.

But yeah, throw enough money at raceprepping one, and you've a formidable GT if you can swallow the extra running costs. The turbo six would be great in a tubeframed, RWD silhouette car, tho...

velocecrat

At first, it seemed weird that there was no option to vote, "no," not that I would. Any car that can be compared to a 959 and XJ220 is in. Which is why I voted R34, it is the sexiest, despite not having fender mirrors, and we could probably find one in better shape than the others. I have always had a hardon for the TT300ZX's of the 90's, but this is by far a superior car.

@akier:
The Skyline is what all those ricers really wish they were driving when they're in their messed up Civics. On the other hand, the Skyline itself cannot be rice. It just can't. Its like saying "those classic muscle cars were just trying to cash in on nostalgia". It doesn't make sense. The amount of effort... the amount of blood, sweat, tears, and parts you would have to put into one of these things to make it "rice" in any way shape or form is so vast that by that point i would be arguing it's no longer a Skyline GT-R.

As a Countach-poster-on-wall person turned Skyline GT-R fanatic... well... uh, i see some of us have wisely been spared from making a hideous mistake and voting "no", again. Good call.

I had to vote R34, simply because of the Z-tune. Otherwise it would have to be R32. The R32 was built so Nissan could go racing, but then it turned into a legend on the street. Because of what the car stands for the biggest, baddest, and most insane GT-R is the one we're looking for. And that's (not really but kind of) the R34 Z-tune. I mean, if this was "Jalopnik Historical Importance Garage" then sure we'd have the R32. The race legend (winning not just individual races but entire racing series and specifications) and the start of the street legend.

But it isn't, it's "Jalopnik Fantasy Garage". And for the ultimate fantasy we need the ultimate Skyline--so ultimate they had actually stopped making them when they made it, so to speak!

Of course, if we're not strictly limited to Nissan's cars then the MiNE'S R34 "ultimate response machine" is the one we're looking for. Anything that can reduce experienced racing drivers to muttered expletives and fear--a car that legitimately lays claim to "ultimate"--is exactly the sort of thing we want in the Jalopnik Fantasy Garage! It's probably too scary for any real garages, anyway. I mean, it has (as i understand it) 600 bhp when you get it from MiNE'S and it's not tuned strictly for horsepower and the understanding is that the customer will tune it further in for whatever that particular customer wants or needs.

You might think even the stupendously expensive fantasy cars--the McLaren F1, for instance--would be faster, but you would be wrong. The MiNE'S R34 does Tsukuba in something like 57 seconds. The F1 does it in 64 seconds. It and the Veyron can have their own corner of the garage, they'd probably beat up all the other cars when our backs were turned anyway. We'd just come in one morning find dismembered bumpers and doors laying around the garage and those two trying to look innocent, otherwise.

@velocecrat:
The point of the techno whatsits? How about the part where the car destroyed entire race series wherever anyone was foolish enough to allow it to compete? Yes, in 4wd form.

Shapeshifter

However Id never suggest the turbo ecotec could fill in duty for the 3800, 2 completely different powerbands designed for 2 different apps. The Turbo Ecotec can potentially make more power and get better mileage than a GM Vortec 6000, but you wouldnt run an ecotec in your Silverado HD. Its a lot of work for little displacement.

It has to be the R34 Z-Tune. I admit that the C10 looks great and wouldn't embarrass you in public, and the 400 has the heritage but the R34 looks like a manga monster.. all pumped up, wired and ready to pounce. You can't put across the sheer sense of drama and barely tamed lunacy inherent in one of those things until you've seen it thundering towards you in your rear view and then been rocked on your shocks as it rips past.

The R34 is one of those cars that will always make anyone think twice before staring you out on the line - it has an intangible sense of peril, like a rattlesnake or panther, and you involuntarily feel it always has a little bit more power than you, no matter how much you actually have :)

Kuang

Gotta go with the R34. The R32's compelling...it's cleaner looking and has racing history. But since you aren't getting the JTCC version in the JFG (why not?), the R34 Z-tune is probably the penultimate street-use Skyline.

It's good to have the C10 there, but it's kind of unfair. Totally different car. You might as well throw up a rally-prep Datsun 510 and vote on that, too.

brandegee

Oh come now, true sports cars do not use V6 engines. A V6 is what you use for Camrys and minivans and W-body sedans to save money on packaging and add a marginal amount of legroom. How many V6 BMWs are there - None, and for good reason. As you can see, a V6 Skyline isn't even an option for the JFG, and rightly so.

Nissan always maintained 2 different lines of sports cars. - The Fairlady Z, for the budget conscious, and the much more expensive, upmarket Skyline. In the Skyline's heyday, the downmarket Z got the V6. The-no-holds-barred Skyline got the I6, the way things should be. That ended with the V35 Skyline/Infiniti G35, and while it made economical sense to rationalize production a la Carlos Ghosn, I hope no one is suggesting the G35 is in the same league as the RB powered Skylines now, right?

tentacles

Again the US hp vs the Japan HP. Your moms GP has a much lower powerband that is more useful in low end pulling and booting around town. (torque). The VQ is a high revver you have to ring out to get all the HP. Youll notice the GM 3.8 and Nissan 3.5 get around the same mpg, but to get hp outa the VQ u gotta use premium also.

@tentacles: The VQ is a damn good engine, most automakers would love to have a 300HP 60 degree chain driven cam all aluminum V6. The cast iron I6 in the R34 is even cooler because of the rarity of the I6 configuration and the turbo potential of a cast iron engine, but the VQ does quite well in my Skyline.

Since when does a Skyline qualify as rice?

By the way, if you feel that passionate about it,please tell the drivers of the plague that is the V6 mustangs with cheap exhausts and dubs that have decended apon the south side of chicago to swallow a pistol. Don't even get me started on the neons with the omnimax light shows underneath.Bad taste in automotive accessories is a universal problem, not just with the hondas. When i see a corvette should the first thing in my mind be Larry the cable guy?
i voted for the r34. it was a toss up between that and the r32. the r32 racing pedigree always astounds me but i like the styling a bit better on the r34. i saw an r34 gtr on the streets of new york the other day(i am pretty sure it was an r34, it turned the corner before i got super close). this is definitely a car that belongs in the jfg. whether it is the r32 or r34, i don't much care. it is an amazing machine.

harumph

Of course, we at JNC are by law required to vote for the KPGC10 GT-R, or "Hakosuka" as the J-landers like to call it.

However, the KPGC110 GT-R (http://www.japanesenostalgiccar.com/picture.cgi?section=events&article=tas2007&picnum=32) , the famous "Kenmeri" Skyline named after the fictional Juppie couple (jupple was just too many words to combine) that starred in the car's long running TV ads, was a completely different generation from the C10.

It was the fourth, in fact, which makes the C10 the the third, and the 1957 Prince Skyline the "original." Ok, we know you probably meant to say "original GT-R" but there's so much murky information out there in the Series of Tubes that we thought we'd chime in and pontificate a li'l.

This past April happened to be the 50th Anniversary of the Skyline, and in the creatively-named Midtown Park in Tokyo, Nissan pulled out one example from each of the 12 generations of Skyline to display:

Of course, none of this changes the fact that the Skyline is a true legend, and there should be room in the JFG for both a C10 AND an R32. Yes, that's right, 1/25th of the world's most desirable cars!

jnostalgics

@Gabe Balch: I have always loved the Autech Stagea it's the best go fast wagon other than the RS6 Plus but it definitly looks better without the terrible R34 front end conversion.

I would like to point out that like the E30 M3 and Audi Ur Quattro the R32 was sold as a road car only because it was required to go racing. It is a stripped down no frills race car for the road. Later generations just like the M3 got heavier and fatter and more diluted by trying to appeal to the masses.

The_Finn

because the GNX is Lord Vader's car, because it is the definition of menace, and just pure unbridled awesomeness...the Skyline as awesome as it may be just puts me in mind of all the little rice boys who run around w/ fart can exhausts, and negative camber on their wheels, and have cars with annoying stickers and wings and lights festooned everywhere....which is why I voted for the C-10 GT-R also its pretty, and it doesn't put me in mind of ricers, and that example that BZR posted a link to is only 40 g's which seems like quite a steal...

clashtastic

Living in Canuckistan.. we can import these from Japan.. I've seen several young hotshots running around in r32's.. although most are the GTS-t and not the GT-R's.. still weird pulling up to a light and noticing that the driver beside you is on the wrong side of the car.. I think r33's become eligable for export next year..

R-34 in the garage for me. One of the cars where the best was the last..

WheatKing

Damn good presentation of the Skyline question.

Some people may wonder why the soon to arrive next gen Skyline isn't up there (obviously the fantasy garage could obtain a pre-production model), but I think that the R34 was the pinnacle of the Skline with its super potential cast-iron inline-6 instead of the corporate VQ engine.

The question is whether the less developed but more historically important and race winning R32 should be there instead (I think the R32 looks better also). The R34 is more famous, but I think the R32 is more significant, and more impressive since it was so advanced back in 1989, so I vote for the R32.

So lets see, in 1989 Nissan got as much power out of a 2.6 liter engine as Buick got out of a 3.8 liter engine in 1987, plus the Nissan had a revolutionary awd system in a rigid all independent suspension monoque chassis. Why is the GNX in the garage again?

no_slushbox

you know how you all always talk about those Countach and F40 posters on your walls, and the teenage lust that issued thereof? i think the R34 really does that for the kiddies these days. the OG predecessor Skylines are very nice, but just look at the haunches on that R34. it's like the Mossad agent on the El Al flight, a ripped dude stuffed into a too-small suit who can kill you in 18 different ways without unbuckling his seat belt. there is no doubt you can put a hurt on the competition in an R34. Godzilla, indeed.

akier

@Stoatmaster: you're not the only one.

Skylines are awesome, right? And we all know that old cars are usually more awesome than new cars in terms of coolness and balls-out unsafe motoring. So thusly, by this derivation, an old Skyline is awesome enough to tear open the fabric of the universe.

I don't know where you got that 4-door one from, but try this on for size.

Old Jap cars in general don't have that irritating Fast and Furious stigma anyway, so that's another plus. It doesn't hurt that the KPGC10 looks subtly aggressive and perfectly proportioned at the same time, especially on those pretty Minilitesque wheels.

Oh, and here's one for sale. Sell your house, it's worth it.

bzr

I voted for the R34, but only on the condition that it's the Z-tune that gets in the garage (otherwise I would've gone with the R32).

I mean, come on, by the time the Z-tune came out skylines had been out of production for a bit, so Nissan had to go out, buy used ones, strip them down and rebuild them. That's like getting 2 cars (maybe 3 considering how good it is).

Plus there's only 20 of them, how could you pass up the chance to grab one?

trlstanc
