@d4005: As the AMG series grows, the subtlety of the horsepower ratings gets finer. Those wanting the extra horses have to shell out lots of cash to get it. I think the E63 is the best of bunch: 507 hp and sleeper looks. But the C63 with *only* 457 "fulminating" hp is probably $20K cheaper. And it sounds like it benefits from a performance oriented slushbox.

But I would have trouble spending lotsa coin on a car with a deliberately detuned engine. Of course, a visit to Brabus would change all that.

@eericson: thats exactly how i feel. as i was readying that i couldnt help but thinking of that safari rally video and saying to myself, yea they actually had to know how to heal toe while uding their left foot on a THIRD pedal. i mean seriously it automatically opens the throttle when you downshit.

@eericson - to call them slushboxes is unfair these days.

The modern auto/steptronic/tiptronic boxes are faster at gear changes than the stick-shift. Sure you might see the manual gearbox 0-60mph time quoted as 0.2 or 0.3 or maybe even 0.5 seconds quicker than the automatic. Just you try getting the quoted 0-60 time of a manual car though. You have to be so rough with the gear change (often without clutch) to achieve it. You just wouldn't treat your own car like that. With the automatic, all you have to do is floor it and you'll achieve the time.

Factor in considerate (but still fast) gear changes you'll be unlikely to beat the automatic car.

I dunno, I just can't get past the fact that AMG only puts slushboxes in their cars. Yeah, I know the 7A in the car is a wonderful piece of engineering, but...

I just need to be able to row my own gears.

I am pretty sure they detuned the engine so as not to compete with the other classes but still being competitive with the M3 and RS4.

Is nobody else underwhelmed with the BHP figure? the "55" AMG was rated at 500BHP when it first came out about 5 years ago, then it dropped to 478BHP (presumably due to emissions), and now we get a "63" AMG at ONLY 457BHP. Are Mercedes travelling back in time? I'm not knocking the performance, I'm sure it's brilliant, but who's stealing all the ponies.

Wowzers, now those are some proper power numbers. None of this 420 horsepower, 295 lb.ft. of torque garbage. It's a little pudgey though, this sucker is giving up 130 kilos to the M3.
