I am absolutely dumbfounded that many of you are bashing the looks of this car, and further flabergasted that many even have the audacity to complain about the lack of the 5-door hatch in the U.S, or the lack of a diesel... you've got to be kidding.

First of all the term "5-door hatch" is european for "station wagon". Yeah, we americans sent that ridiculous configuration the way of the doe-doe bird back in the '80's!!! While is was very popular with soccer-mom's and yuppie females... in no way can they be considered cool or sporty to any sane, heterosexual male. Talk about ugly!!

It's funny that many of you complain about a car that is 1) A coupe, as a sporty car should be, 2) that it has a powerful twin-turbo engine in a light weight car, 3)at a price around 30K.

You're all dorks if that doesn't appeal to you. Why don't you go out and buy a 1980's Subaru wagon (which looks like the ridiculus 5-door hatch you inexplicably like), punch a hole in the muffle so you can enjoy the annoying rattle of a deisel, and pretend to drop your imaginary kids off at soccer practice, go to palates class, then meet your fellow stay at home moms at the spa for makeovers?

Sniper

@ZeGerman: Another option is that they're just saying it's slower and a proper 3rd party test would show that to be false. We'll find out eventually. I'd say spring, 2008!

I might have to start saving up. My general policy of no car loans has meant no brand-new cars for a while, what with all the dough I've been dropping on the house, garage, etc. If this thing is easily moddable to 400hp and comes with a proper stick option, I'll be in trouble.

Oh no! It doesn't look amazing! Guess what? The 2002 looked retarded when it came out. I HATE BMW, and I have a G35 to prove it, but I'm still unbiased enough to admit that this will be a completely bad assed car.

@ZeGerman: well, i doubt this is the most scientific way to look at this, but a 1-series with the 3-liter engine and the m package starts at 26385 gbp (53,006 usd) in the uk... now, this is more engine, but not quite as much car (coupe vs hatchback...).
now, a 335i coupe starts at $40,800 in the us, but starts at 33,900 gbp (68,105 usd) in the uk. this is where it gets unscientific. the us price is about 60% of the uk one. going by that, the 135 should start around 32 grand. which is right where the 3 sedan starts.
in short, my guess is as good as yours.

smokyburnout

@smokyburnout: The A3/S3 is too expensive and doesn't look it and suffers from uninspiring, sub-GTI performance. The A4 isn't that much more money.

The 135i is feasible for the North American market because it's a small 2-door coupe. People perceives coupes and sexy and expensive -even when the coupe version doesn't make any sense compared to the 4-door sedan (witness the E30, E36, and E46 3-series). The A3 says "I couldn't afford an A4", while costing damn near as much.

BMW makes a twin turbo, small coupe that can be easily software-modded to over 400hp and we have people on here wanting a 5 door diesel or 4 banger? Come on folks, this is an epic ride...stop the bitching! Its OK to like something.

Unlike many on here, I actually drove a heavily modded 2002 for about 10 years and this car is simply on another planet performance wise.

Any pricing ideas for the 135i? The Z4 3.0si coupe gets to sixty in 5.6 seconds, which is only 0.3 of a second slower than what they are proposing for the 135i. And if the back seat is anything like the last-gen 1-series, it will essentially be a 2-seater anyway (thus making the Z4 and 1-series comparable).

I'm wondering how close the 1-series will come to the Z4 coupe's base MSRP of $40k.

ZeGerman

"The 1 Series Coupe will reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created."- Replace the word reinvent with "resurrect" and it makes more sense. Hell yes, this looks promising, just offer a proper stick or non-slush DSG and keep it light, and I might buy a BMW someday. Oh, and a button you can hit five times and disable iTry.

Turboner

I hope that this car shows other carmakers that Americans will buy expensive small cars that aren't junk. The Mini has started this but runs out of steam on the performance/price curve. I think this will do well.

@Mr.Forum: BMW tried selling the 316 here twelve years ago or so, and it flopped miserably. For some reason, nobody wanted to pay BMW prices for the less-than-inspiring performance it had... They are selling the lower-powered cars to the locals, though...

TwoUptons

Doubters: I say this car is a legend in the making. With the 3-series gone all German sports-Buick, BMW is free to make the 1-series a balls-out slightly less mass-market sports coupe. Don't think cheaper or decontented, think differently (more sporting) focused. While on paper it may appear similar to the E92 coupe, I'll bet it'll run circles around one at the autocross.

i agree that i would be considerably more excited if they were bringing the hatch and that the headlights could use some work. still though, this looks like a pretty fun car.remind me why this isn't the new 3-series coupe? i feel like this will steal a lot of sales from the 3 actually, especially from the younger set who will undoubtedly see the lighter weight (not to mention lower price) as an advantage. i will be interested to see how they price it, but it seems like bmw is trying to squeeze the 1-series into a very small gap between the 3-series coupe and the z4 coupe (ok, clearly not in respect to price, but how many v6-powered, rwd, i-drive mismanaged coupes can one company sell at once...?)

will

@racerx: I duuno, it's not that bad. Certainly is a shrunken 3 series, but then again all the BMW's these days look like the same car resized. It's less severe Banglification, which is good, but those headlights just don't quite look right to me.

Overall though, it looks like a fun little commuter ride, if you've got some extra coin for the 135i. And me wonders if there's a convertible ever on the plans for this one. A more affordable convertible BMW is certainly intriguing.

HDC
