Totally agree. Mostly of interest to men but my next door neighbour's 14 year old daughter loves mine. Actually one pulled up next to me probably more than 20 years ago and it was Elle Mcpherson at the wheel. It was actually hers too. Designed by American Lapine. Look at the red one above - same basic shape as original designed 36 years ago ! Looks absolutely current even now. These things are cheap over here in Australia and my yard's full of them ! My oldest is a 1979 S manual and even so it has cruise control, power mirrors, central locking , climate control etc - almost everything today's cars have and all I need anyway.
I have noticed the prices in the US are rising as well as even 2nd hand parts unfortunately which I often get from there. 928 was also first cas with soft plastic bumpers, first car to have plastic fuel tank and something else that I can't think of. Still best handling GT car ever about 10 years ago - maybe eclipsed now but would still better most. Super comfortable, roomy car for driver, great seats. Every real car lover should have one at least once in their life ! I have a sort of appreciation of 911s but they are just bad news in ride and comfort for everyday. Go - treat yourself - a really good one is still pretty cheap over there really. You'll love it. Go for the S4 for much better fuel mileage. Don't worry about parts - even if you have an engine failure - a good S4 engine can be had for as little as $1000 - $1500 on ebay US !

In 1992 my father bought a cherry red 1989 928. The window sticker when new was 84 thousand. With inflation that makes it roughly around 120 thousand in todays market. When I was 17, in 1997, he gave it to me. In 2006 I sold mine. I had the car for almost a decade. The reason why I sold the car was the cost. Jesus was it an expensive car to maintain. Over that decade I put at least 30 grand into it. The styling is love it or leave it, and my prom date told me she didn't want to go to prom in that ugly porsche! She was a stuck up b.... But it still looks modern today and I dream about it every now and then. I bought a 2003 AMG SL 55 to replace my 928, but I am not as passionate about it.I have to say, that if the porsche was less expensive to run I never would have gotten that mercedes.
Someone earlier commented that the 928 is a car that you have to explain to people. Not really. Its a car that you have to explain to 15 year old boys and freshman girls in college. Those who know about cars know about the 928. No explanation needed.

atlas55

Summary of previous discussion to this point:

- If you're less than 30 years old, have never driven one, are a domestic badge whore, or believe that bruce cars must be rectangular in shape, then the 928 might not be for you.

- Every one else loves the 928.

I have seen a couple 500+ hp supercharged 928s that will give any car -- ANY car -- a run for the money. Like all performance cars of that era, maintenance is necessary, but the 928 was one solid beast. Protected from salt and other environmental nastiness, they are durable as anything.

I can't believe that people are comparing the 944 turbo to the 928. The 928 was intended for comfortable cruising at 150mph all day long. The 944/968 was intended to carve autocross and road courses. Two different cars, friends, two very different cars. Induct them both in the Garage and be done with it.

Letting a 928 GTS get away at that price borders on insanity. My sincerest condolences...

my favorite car is a motorcycle

I vote no, because, as mentioned before, it is too attainable. Any fool in my city that wants to drive a porsche gets one of these. I can barely drive around town without seeing one or two of them being parked. I think the styling is nothing special.

And didn't the guys at top gear once had a challenge of buying a 'supercar' at under L10.000,- ? James May one of these I think, and it didn't get very far...

f_demon

Just want to point out that the top pic of the 928 in this blog is an older model. The body lines are slightly defined better and lights were more curvy in accordance with the Supra/Celica styles in the 90's.

I voted AYE cuz this WAS the car ever since I was a kid. Still have a hotwheels bright green 928 with me for all these years. Almost bought one back in college but after doing a bit of research, found out that it was "unreliable" and would cost me an arm and a leg with repairs. Also, the eBay dude seemed kinda shifty.

My Porsche buddies still hate it because "it's not a 911".

superbmtsub

@cyclopticgaze: Agreed. Weird Science wins over Risky Business for the 928 over 944, plus Bill Paxton's Chet could kick Tom Cruise's sissy ass any day of the week.

I have always loved the lines of these cars, and the awesome exposed pop-up headlights. I used to walk 8 blocks out of the way across PDX from the waterfront, where I worked as a cook, to NW, where my wife worked retail to pick up the car after work. Why? A beautiful, black 928 that lived a little bit out of the way. With a STICK! I would just walk by and say, hi, everyday. I haven't ever seen one for sale around Portland that didn't have the automatic, though. For Shame.

Definately, yes. I know some people won't understand, but I would take one over a 911, just for the V8 and looks.

Turboner

I had a 944s (.5 of a 928) for 9 years. If the real deal with twice the 944s, it merits a place in any garage.

I just test drove a Cayman S. Great car if you don't need to see anything behind you. Dealer offered me 10K below sticker, I declined and got myself a 335.

i'm all for an early 80's 928 with a chevy 350 in there. conversion kit is reasonably priced and engine repairs are much much cheaper. plus you can put out 600hp-ish before having to worry about the backend/tranny breaking on you

that a few choice upgrades from a GTS and you have a kick-ass sleeper

I will never forget when i was sitting bored in math class and I looked up at the calendar by my teacher's desk with a picture of an empty street in China. Something caught my eye and when i got up to look it was a 928 in that sickly and alluring green and I spent the whole day smiling.

voodoojoo

@MarionCobretti: The Starquest may be better looking than the 944 but it's also slower. The 944 engine is one of the biggest 4 cylinders gas engines ever in mass production, it's basically one half of the 928 engine's block. A well built 944 Turbo can lay down way more than a built Starquest. The G54B just doesn't go as far. The only way a Starion can be built to compete with the 944 is if we're talking about JDM and some Euro market Starions that received 4G63Ts. Those cars were never available in the states and obtaining the necessary engine block and mounts to swap a Starquest to 4G63 power is pretty expensive and has been rarely accomplished. The JDM Starions used an early 4G63 block that is different from the later DSM motors due to its longitudinal orientation for RWD.

Power rise, a G54B-powered Starquest is a better rival to the 924 Turbo (but not the 924S, which had a 944 engine in it).

brandonvalentine

@MarionCobretti: The 240 and 2000GT were Japan's E-Types. As for the 928 haters? I am so with Lieberman on this. I remember the morning after the '06 Bullrun, I was on the roof of the Beverly Hilton's garage with some pals. There were Lambos and Lotuses up there. Basically all manner of exotica. The cheapest (in terms of current value) car in the lot was Team Oh! Canada's 928. And I couldn't stop staring at it. It's one of the coolest cars ever built, period. And I don't even particularly like Porsches. Also, people who think the 968 is hotter obviously need to pay a visit to the Betty Ford Clinic. It's without doubt the ugliest, most half-assed-looking Porsche ever built. Oh, and I vote for a black S4. The first car I ever drove was my dad's 928. That was in 1979. The only thing I didn't like was the strange Pop Art inspired upholstery. Other than that it was an inspiring car. While my dad had owned lots of sports and muscle cars, the 928 was playing in a whole new ballgame.

I vote yes, but I only really want to see a 928S4 or a 928GTS get in. I think the S4 and GTS look better than the originals, and the performance is astounding. The S4 is the better value here too, being that you can get one for $20k, and it's got performance worth at least $50k. I actually had the opportunity to drive an S4, and while before I was never terribly impressed with the 928, driving one made a convert out of me. Such a fast car, and an impeccable Grand Tourer.

The 928 will always get my vote. In 1988, Porsche, in a marketing push, sent my dad a poster of a 928 with "McCarthy" printed on the license plate. (Everyone else seemed to get the 911.) At that age, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. The next year, my uncle bought one. Again, coolest thing ever. A few years later, I was treated to a ride in an especially hot 928. Since I was in the back seat (sans headrests), I learned the true meaning of neck-snapping accelleration. Then, a few weeks ago, I find that a none-too-bad-looking older woman drives the gunmetal gray 928 across the street from my apartment.

So yes, the 928 gets my hearty endorsement.

ThnderbltDoherty

I've always admired the 928 so I'm voting "yes". I love the fact that Porsche elitist pricks purists absolutely revile the car. I love its "wolf in AMC Pacer-inspired clothing" style. I love that I can get my 6-3 ass inside it and drive in relative comfort at high speeds for extended periods of time.

I played around with an '87 S4 a few weeks ago and it rekindled my fondness for the car. I only wish I made enough money to move close to a talented 928 mechanic so I could befriend him in the hopes he would take a personal interest in caring for my 928 without draining my wallet on a quarterly basis.

Uncle Bo, averting foreclosure

I guess I disagree. The JFG should include cars that are unattainable, but shitballs, how many of those are there? Go to any Concours d'Elegance and you'll find 50 choice examples quickly. I argue that it's harder to find choice automotive examples that were more mass produced. I mean, I'll never vote in an Accord, but I'd also have trouble voting in some one or two-off spec car that maybe two dozen people have ever driven and only gets seen when it's rolled out to spiffy-up a car show.

cyclopticgaze

Wow...I love cars the purists love to hate (M-coupe anyone?), I love oddball styling, and I even like Porsche.

I never knew anything about the history or mechanicals before, and it's awesome to know what's under the hood.

But man...that styling does nothing for me. Johnny says it's gorgeous, I say it's boring bordering on ugly. Looks like every other underpowered fastback wannabe sports car of the automotive dark ages that was the late 70s. It's like Anne for Arrested Development..."her?"

Probably a generational thing, too. Growing up (in the 90s), the only people I ever saw in these were 40-something douchebags who still thought it was 1984 and rocked a serious irony-free yuppie bachelor impress-you-with-my-car and Laser-Disk player attitude.

The one redeeming styling feature is what it looks like with the headlights up, which I can't believe you didn't mention or include a picture of:
I can almost understand the arguments about the 928 being too attainable. But to say that the 968 is a better looking car!? Blasphemy! The 968 looks like a warmed over 944, which itself looked like a body-kitted 924. If you want a quick four-cylinder turbo sports car that's fun on the drive and has quasi-comical fender flares, get a Starion or Conquest. It will be cheaper to maintain, and actually does look better than the 944 that it drew so many styling cues from.

The 928, though, looks like nothing else, and count me in with Lieberman, Clarkson et al. who think it beautiful. I'd never heard of it described as Germany's E-type* before, but I'd say that's spot on.

*I have, however, heard Jeremy Clarkson refer to the 3rd-gen RX-7 as Japan's answer to the E-type," another comparison which, while off-topic, I wholeheartedly support.

MarionCobretti

I, too, am a rotten person. As much as I am impressed with the story behind the 928, and agree that Jonny should've bought his boss's car when he had the chance (or any car cooler than a Stanza, for that matter), I'm more of a 944-type than a 928; even if everything between the two were the same mechanically, the 944 just looked better to me.

The Thirteenth Sentry

@jonnylieberman: I think part of the reliability factor comes with the crossover potential this car had. The 928 was the German sports car for macho, steroid induced assholes who wanted to one-up their friends with Trans Am's and IROC Camaro's.

I'm guessing that the 928's demographic weren't exactly keen on the routine maintenance that European cars require. They seem to be deemed unreliable because their owners made them so.

This car gives me visions of mullets, red leather jackets, Night Ranger and date rape.

eltonito

I think the model that ought to be included is the '86 or so 928S. It had the 32-valve V8, but still the early model front and rear fascias. True, you'd have to strip off those bodyside moldings that spoiled its smooth flanks, but that's a minor matter. Then just have the Devek fellows spec out the V8 with a stroker crank and a bored out block (good for 6.5 liters), and throw on some GTS brakes and wheels. Voila!

Oh, and a few other points:

I'm sure this was just a typo, but it was make from 1978-1995, not 1985.

The later 32-valve cars alas had a more pedestrian looking intake manifold. Only the 16-valve cars had that look of an angry mechanical spider sitting astride the V8.

Alas, Porsche never really raced the 928 as far as I know, nor did they ever develop the engine to its full potential. So here are a couple of bad-ass 928's:

First, as I alluded to Devek earlier, google "Devek White Car," or just go here for some specs, to see what the 928 was capable of when modified, but still fully street legal.

Also, check out Mark Anderson's car. This guy raced in what was then the Speedvision World Challenge, and turned in some respectable performances for a privateer against guys running much more modern machinery.
I'm kind of surprised at the resistance of many Jalops to voting in the 928. Seems to boil down to styling and reliability.

Styling, well, OK. I've always thought the 944 to be a more masculine looking car what with those flares and without the rounded rear end. Matter of taste.

I had an '80 928 5-speed a few years back. Unfortunately, it was pretty rough so I decided it wasn't worth keeping. Despite being completely neglected, it was still well-put together and pretty reliable. The alternator died twice, but it was otherwise a great car. Beautiful-sounding V8, one of the best engine sounds ever. The one thing I'll never get over is how well-planted the car felt, even though it was 25 years old. At 120, you felt absolutely glued to the road. The faster you went, the better it felt. The handling was flawless. Very cool and comfortable interior, too.

Jon_Furst

I am a rotten person. I admit it. Even though I've wanted a 928 since I was child. Even though I've never forgiven my father for buying a BMW instead of this because it was "more practical," (I was five, I would have been perfectly comfortable in the back seat!!) I vote no.

Any car this available on eBay and used car lots doesn't cut it for a limited number "fantasy garage." It's in my "would like to very possibly will own garage", yes. But damn it, I don't ache and drool over it like I do a 550, or even a 959.

And damn it, if this is a fantasy garage, where there hell is the 917? I fantasize about driving that on the road every day!

b.borrman

Jonny, you are clearly still smarting from passing this one up....who in their right mind takes a german car to a mechanic for a window motor replacement anyway? It's always the non-engine stuff that kills you on German cars.

Reminds me of my friend Rick's old joke about the financially devastating a/c repair on his wife's 635csi. (in the voice of a mechanic) "I have bad news for you...its not the transmission."

The fantasy garage is quickly becoming a mechanic's dream - cars that are in constant need of five-figure repairs.
The 928 is as unreliable and as likely to strand its owner as a Citroen SM; yet it has none of the daring engineering or French I'll do-it-my-way charm.

The 928 is a horrible stain on the reputation of Porsche's engineering prowess. There is no excuse for the 928's suckitude. It was awful. Every bit as fat, unreliable and sorry as the BMW 8 Series.

goatrope

The Shark is a truely awsome car, esp. given the era it was designed and built in. It is absolutely 'georgeous'... BUT I cannot vote for something as pedestrian as a 928... yes the GTS is REALLY HOT, but its still overweight...

(BTW, I own a 944 Turbo that has been put on a diet), and while a 928 would make a great track toy once stripped, there is a LOT of stuff to keep up on a shark...

I'd vote for a Dauer 962 or 959 or a RUF CTR (Yellow Bird)... I don't dream of owning a Shark though and this is a dream garage... sorry.

jakay11

My uncle Kevin (RIP) is partially responsible for my addiction to cars. The day he let me drive my great aunt to the airport in his 735 by myself was the start...but my fondest memory was the day he looked over at me from the driver's side of his 928 and said "Wanna drive?"

I remember turning the key, and as that sweet v8 rumbled to life, a huge grin spread across my face. I really didn't know all that much about Porsches, but remebering thinking, "Wow, this thing's kinda like a German Mustang!" Even better, as I started to drive, my Uncle looked at me and said "Don't pussy-foot, punch it!" As Frank Zappa would say, "Yowza!"

I almost bought one a few years back, but horror stories of thousands of dollars to replace a rear-end made me think twice.

I drive an original M Coupe now. It doesn't have the top-end of a 928, nor does it have that amazing v8, but in many ways it's a kindred spirit. The 928 surely needs to join the M Coupe in the Fantasy Garage!

Not knowing anything about this car up until recently.. (decided to compare a porsche to a bmw 850csi to see what might make my personal garage) it rates as a serious contender in the "i will buy someday" category.

personally i think it's kinda ugly.. it has that minimalist thing happening with the body.. kind of like the result of an AMC Pacer mating with a Jag e-type..

But it's growing on me.. still a toss up with the 850 or the 928.. it is however.. a sleeper porsche.. because it doesn't look like a 911 it isn't a car you pull chicks with.. it has all the outward appeal of a corolla.. or 80's rx7 and most cops wouldn't give it a second glance.. just a funky 80's underpowered sports car (ala 924.. but not).. unfortunately its a car you have to explain.. and you begin explaining it by having to defend that it's a actually a pretty damn good car..

But as far as a car you can pick up for $6K, that's a proper GT car, with a high hoonage potential 300hp v8 and rwd.. that's a bit of a sleeper except to those in the know.. it's a damn good deal.. i expect that those $6K cars will disappear quickly as your readers now know they exist.

I voted yes.. but as a bargin way into a proper sports car.. the $ to performance ratio is pretty damn high.. much better than any american car.. save probably an 80's turbo firebird fitted with a modern EFI system, or a t-type that the owner doesn't know what he has..

The fantasy garage needs a daily driver.. screw the phaeton.. this is it.

WheatKing

Can I stamp a preemptive bullshit on anyone who states that only true Porsches have engines hanging behind the rear wheels? Because if they do then they will have conveniently forgotten about 550's, 904's, 906's, 908's and the absolutely most Bruce race car of all time the 917.

Crashburn

My wife has a 944 turbo, and I have a 928S. Both are fantastic, with the handling edge going to the 951 (944T). But for me, nothing can replace the burble of the big V8 in the 928, or the rush of hitting 55 mph while still in first gear, and 120 before you're out of third. Good stuff and definitely worth of the fantasy garage!

pmindemann

@burglar: Ditto. This may make me a wretched person, but the styling on the 928 has always looked really dumpy and awkward to me. The rear quarter is the *only* view that's good.

Much rather see the 944 in there, if we're only going to put in one front-engined Porsche from that era. Alot sexier than the 928, but not as heavy and overdone as the 968.

kaosfere

I've been the proud owner of an 86.5 928S 5-speed for several years now. That's the last of the "70s" body style, but with the newer brakes, exhaust and suspension. Black on black. A rare beast. And aside from a Vector W2, it's about the only car that I can imagine keeping this car nut happy for many years to come.

pmindemann

Despite being a rotten person, I am voting yes on this one. A 928 has been in my wife's fantasy garage for several years (The 356's and early 911's that are in the actual garage aren't enough) so I've got to go thumbs up. The car is more common than the SM I voted against and almost as troublesome, but it truly represented a new and risky way of thinking at Porsche. They may have not hit the mark, but you've got to encourage the staid Germans to express themselves periodically, except for SUV's.

@johnny lieberman: In light of the recent comments suggesting we should change the name to the Fascist Garage, I applaud you for making a choice from an appropriate manufacturer.

junkman

The 928 was great but it was a GT through and through. Replace this with the 944 Turbo and you have a fantasy garage car. Most were stick, 50/50 weight and completely insane when modified. Sorry but the 928 was a pig. If there had to be one front engine car that says Porsche, it's the 944 Turbo.

wheatstraw
