It's not so lately, but of the three cars I've owned, I've driven to the factories where two of them were built (and in some level of defense, the third car was built in Mexico).

Oh, and at work a couple months ago, there was a poster for decoding GM VIN numbers. I meant to abscond with it, but it was thrown out. I'm still trying to memorize what it all means.

Maymar - now with 37% less anonymity

Well, I guess this doesn't qualify lately, but in '95 (I think) I installed a printer into my trunk powered by a DC/AC adapter. I ran a serial cable to the driver's seat and from there I could receive and print FAXES or email through my Newton 120 w/ 2.0's PC-card modem connected to my analog Motorola Gold Series flip phone :-O The horror!

Schalliol

Making a cold air intake MAF mount out of a progresso soup can/ Installing MOMO pedals and badging (the pedals have a "bridge", it lets you do burnouts with one foot (ultimate hoonage)

a007map

Driving shoes - Very Red coloured, Ferrari Branded, size US14/UK13 Puma Speedcats. Used on Trackdays and special occasions. Very comfortable and fantastic pedal feel. Although with my feet I can operate all the pedals all the time anyway.

I'd like a set of driving gloves, but only if I can find green ones like Tsuchiya wears.

Other geeky things - I bought a Tamiya RC Car, the Impreza drift chassis one. I painted it black to match my WRX, and have attempted to fabricate a GT wing for it to match mine a few times. I even made the number plate the same.

I watched the fast and the furious three and tried to guess what dump valve each car was running, with an accuracy that left me feeling slightly uneasy.

I run without the rear seats and the spare wheel on trackdays/drag days. "Cause it's lighter, you know".

I knew what the 4AGE engine was that discontinuuity mentioned.
There was a grey market shop in Cincinnati that I would ride my two, yes TWO, horsepower Puch moped to to ogle the "legalized" cars. My favorite was the metallic blue Renault R5T2 with gold wheels. That has to be geekier than sitting through Ronin credits to see who the stunt drivers were.

Crashburn

But I once pondered putting a tasteful & classy "U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701" decal across the hood of my first ride (a CJ-7) which I had planned to paint silver. I still ended up designing custom vinyl decals that advertised my geekdom quite clearly.

Bumblebee

There would be the frame-off Chevy LUV in pieces scattered around my garage right now. There would be the gradual wearing off on my girlfriend, who just a couple of weeks ago while in NYC took a digital photo of a 2CV in the West Village and came back excited to show it to me. There's that hour long weekly podcast I listen to on VW Type IV engines.

I don't know about this driving shoe thing. I've never liked 'em much. I've worn cowboy boots my whole life, having grown up in a Texas hill country town where parents are not eager to have their sons or daughters come home from playing in the woods with a snake bite on the ankle. I've always driven with a pair of them on and anything lighter just feels strange. The pedal feel is just fine for me through a pair of leather soled boots.

brandonvalentine

@FishingCrue:
I have been seriously considering using my Zaino Z-2 on bathroom tile. Not the floor (crappy linoleum), just the walls.

I once bought a blacklight and fluorescent dye to diagnose a power steering fluid leak in my old '98 Subaru. Worked like a charm - and when I sold it I described the diagnosis to the prospective owners and that closed the sale. They figured if I was that obsessive the rest of the car was alright.

For that same car I once did a complete design of an LED display to show the torque being sent to the rear axle, which would have used the solenoid voltage for the center diff clutch as a signal (it was an auto tranny). I never got around to building it before selling the car.

saabophile

On the driving shoes - I just got the DC driving shoes that recently came out. Not because they are the best driving shoes out there (they probably aren't), but because the first run includes a limited edition in the Subaru rally colors. Can't wait to use them at the track and underwhelm people with my mediocre lap times.

And as far as other car-geekery, I downloaded and printed the entire multi-thousand-page tech's guide for my car, and 3-hole punched all the pages and put in binders. I did this JUST IN CASE I take something apart and need to know the torque specs for a nut/bolt. But hey, it did provide me with the schematic necessary for disabling the daytime running lamps.

dearyou

I bought a 1970s Jaguar and spent three weeks fixing a fuel leak and the carbs. Oh, wait, that's just dumb.

Aside from that I just bought a pair of Adidas driving shoes, and while almost fashionable, they are nice and narrow and help my giant hooves dance around a Mini's peddles on the weekends.

b.borrman

I have a pair of wrasslin' shoes for the same reason, size 13s. I also bought a pair of Puma Speed Cats, and never wear them, except when driving. SPEEEEDCATZ!

teargas

I went to a party at car club that was hosted by a car blog.

Larry Forney

Back on topic, probably the geekiest car-related thing I've done recently (besides staying up late writing that Carlisle post or ordering an in car fire extinguisher) is rig up a garden sprayer filled with distilled water as a final rinse aid when I wash the Seven.

Al Navarro

I put a set of Hella FF1000s driving lights on the front of my WRX wagon, in addition to the stock fogs. My rationale is: I live up here in the hinterlands, where it gets dark early and often in the winter. My wife's opinion: I'm a huge dork. During the first weeks the lights were on the car I ran the plastic rock covers. You know, the white ones that say Hella. Well, the first time the wife saw them she wouldn't get in the car. She thought the covers were trying to say I'm "Hella Cool." I've switched to the transparent lexan shields now.

Harvey Mushman

Recently, I once again sucessfully resisted the temptation to buy dedicated driving shoes (in this case, Piloti Prototipos). I've had the addidas ones in the past, but consider those more of a fashion shoe.

I guess i didn't want to be "that guy"...on my last recon trip to the Dragon, I picked out the owner of an S2000 parked outside my hotel because of his shoes. Some Se7en owners with larger feet need the slim line soles of wrestling/driving shoes but I have size 8s and have driven the Cat in Red Wings.

I've got a pair of reebok driving shoes. I only wear them on special days, and the only car I own that's a manual is a '91 Integra.

I'm gonna go cry now.

newt0
