(Jumping on weeks later)

HDC: If you're getting a Rubicon, you're not swapping axles and t-cases. It'd be pointless. The price difference between a Rub and anything else is FOR all the gadgetry. If you're going bigger, you'd just use a sport.

Also, you can run stock Rub running gear up to 35, maybe 37" tires, so it's only the HEMI + 40" tires guys that would be swapping.

I'm curious how all the new electro gizmos are going to affect the aftermarket options like axle swaps and better transfer cases. All those proprietary electronics dependant features usually have to be ditched if you want to move up a notch. For example it's pretty much impossible to get a rear disc brake conversion (usually done with an axle swap) on the previous TJ's and keep the ABS. At least the new Wranglers *finally* have discs all around.

HDC

I had a last-gen Rubicon, and loved the vehicle. Some financial reversals caused me to have to sell it.

The new one is pretty sweet... I am not sold on the look of the 4 door yet (the proportions are off to my eye), and would like more torque for offroading (BlueTec... BlueTec...) It is on my short list for the next vehicle too.

oyveh

Yeah, I like the Sahara, but I'm a little disapointed that you give up the locking diffs that the Rubicon has. Also if you get the tow hitch on the Sahara they force you to take the 4:10 gears anyways.

Sharky

I test drove one of these just after they came out and I was surprised how well mannered they are on the road. But I was upset over the acceleration. While thats not a big deal in a Jeep, it would be nice for the city.

But compared to the last Wrangler, this thing is a freakin Bentley...

tonsoffun

You will definitely get better fuel mileage in the Sahara. The Rubicon has heavier drive-train components 4:10 gears and larger, heavier tires. The Sahara has a 3:21 ratio. The EPA rating 17/19 MPG is the same for both but I dont believe it.

Buckster

What kind of RPMs are you spinning with the Rubicon at highway speeds? I'm trying to figure out if the Sahara with it's higher ratio rear-end might make more sense for me.

Sharky

Great review. I never thought I'd ever read "more carlike" and Jeep in the same sentence, but I guess it makes sense, seeing how they're branding the Jeep name to more of a broader base. The 4 door Wrangler is selling extremely well, to markets where Wranglers never sold before, families. Gulp.

grzydj
