Apparantly the vast majority of these cars sustained no damage whatsoever- they were securly fastened to the deck, so they didn't move around at all, and only a small portion of them were underwater.

Probably just a good legal move on Mazda's part, anyone who had any kind of mishap in their car would sue, claiming it had something to do with the Cougar Ace. Then there's the issue of wary customers, who, not understanding what happened to the cars, or what became of them, would automatically boycott all Mazda products out of fear.
