BMW's latest — and smallest — new crossover concept is the BMW X1, seen here on the floor yesterday at the Paris Auto Show. It looks a little more robust in person than when we saw leaked press shots earlier in the week, but it's still hard to get excited about another crossover, particularly one that looks, and is bound to drive, like the underwhelming X3 we already have, only with less room. The BMW X1 has unfortunately been in the pipeline for some time now, and due to the inevitable fact that it's going to be a soft-roading small crossover, we've been trying to just ignore it. No longer. This new teaser video for the concept version of the BMW X1, to be released at the Paris Motor Show next month, itself just a teaser for the impending production version, depicts skateboarding, graffiti-painting guys apparently doing marketing for the X1. Obviously this is just typical marketing bullshit, as this will not be a car for those anti-social punks, but rather for sorority girls. Expect most of the 1-Series' engine range to be available on the X1, connected to BMW's X-Drive AWD drivetrain — which should make it an able handler. Autobild, our favorite German tabloid of a car rag, has gone on another speculation spree, and this time it's related to the new 2009 BMW X3 and first 2010 BMW X1. The pending refresh of the compact SUV will come just in time to duke it out with new offerings in the form of the Mercedes Benz GLK and Audi Q5. But what kind of new goodies can we expect for this duo? Well, for starters, the X3 will be growing slightly, up 8 cm in wheelbase and with a corresponding slight bump in width. As with many western auto shows, the Beijing Motor Show has become obsessed with hybrid concept cars. Though most of these hybrids are sedans or MPV's, automaker Soueast decided to go with a squashed GT sports car. The result is the X1 Plug-in HEV, which looks rather sharp and manages to be almost a modern interpretation of a Jensen from certain angles. Does the powertrain exist? Maybe, maybe not. Does Jackie Chan endorse this car? Probably not. But Soueast makes cars in a deal with Mitsubishi Motors so they probably had a bunch of posters lying around and everyone loves Jackie Chan. More »

Although we shouldn't expect to see the BMW X1 mini-SUV stateside anytime before 2011, it looks like the folks at Bayerische Motoren Werke are working hard to make a 2010 reveal for Europe a reality. Based on the new 1 Series, but taller and stockier, the new mini SAV from BMW size-wise is supposed to be comparable to Toyota's RAV4 - and will actually be sharing components (and possibly some cladding) with Mini's new off-roader ( yes, the same one we talked about yesterday ). The X1 will supposedly arrive with full-time four-wheel drive and we're assuming with all the normal BMW bells-and-whistles. Full spy report from Brenda Priddy below the jump.

The story of the BMW X1 baby SUV started with a report in Germany's AutoBild, and recently culminated in an announcement of confirmation from BMW boss Norbert Reithofer. Now, just as with the X6, a strange test mule is afoot. Spies say this car, a variant of BMW's "squareface" testers of models' past, is a dummy for the 2010 X1's chassis, which it will share with a similar Mini model. BMW's Norbert Reithofer's scheme for two new compact SUVs — one for BMW, the other for Mini — assumes Europe will be the lil buggers' primary market. The upcoming BMW X1 will be built in a European plant, and the Mini offroader will be outsourced to a third party. Speculation is on production contractor Magna Steyr, which built the first-gen BMW X3 at its Graz plant. Does that mean the minitrucks will forgo the Americas? Not sure, though we'd bet the X1 will stay home, and the Mini will show up after about two years of teasing. Of course, past results do not guarantee future performance. [via Automotive News] More »

C'mon now, enough is enough with this small SUV thing, no? According to Germany's AutoBild, BMW's working on an even smaller ute, the X1, which would be the baby brother of the X3 and X5. The Bild says BMW's alleged move is based on numbers: The small ute segment is set to grow by 50 percent by the middle of next decade, and new competitors from Volkswagen (Tiguan) and Acura (RDX) — and more reportedly in the works from Audi (Q3), Mercedes (GLK) — are prepared to carve up the market, with or without a response from the Bayern boys.
