Which New Car Could Last 3 Million Miles?

The tale of Irv Gordon's three million mile 1966 Volvo P1800S is incredible any way you slice it. Truly durable cars can go 200,000 miles or more, and we've heard of ones that go 500,000 or even 750,000. But three million? That's a real testament to both proper maintenance and build quality.

It may also say something for mechanical simplicity. There's no question that today's cars are more reliable and are better built than they have ever been, but with all of their electronic features, are they really equipped to go the distance like Irv's old Volvo did? I bet more of them are than you might think.

So that's our question of the day: Which new car could last three million miles?

If it were up to me, I'd say you can't really beat the proven toughness of a diesel. So I'd vote for the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI. Volkswagens aren't known as the most trouble-free cars in the world, but their diesels are pretty robust. Get it with a stick for good measure, too. Plus, it's a wagon, so you'd get three million miles of practicality.

What new cars do you think will join the three million mile club?
