Wow, yeah, these are apparently press shots of the VW Pickup concept to be revealed at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover, Germany this week decked out in "Search and Rescue" gear. Well, sort of — they dropped some stickers on it and put some life preservers and a fire extinguisher in the back and called it a day. They also may have skimped on the name, because although we don't have it yet, there is a name on the back license plate — and it's simply "Pickup." Still, what's in a name anyway? Especially when that liftgate's pretty trick if you ask us. We're told to expect a press release soon on the VW pickup truck that's not called the "Robust." And does it really matter? Despite rumors that VW won't sell its upcoming pickup, the "Robust" (that probably won't be its final name) in the US, the company does appear to be conducting hot weather testing here. It looks like the 2010 VW Pickup will be sold exclusively in markets that appreciate simple, well-engineered, utilitarian pickups rather than leather-trimmed, gargantuan lifestyle accessories. Befitting that purpose, a range of common-rail diesels will be offered in addition to a gasoline V6. More »

That's right folks, this is the first photo of the upcoming Volkswagen Robust — VW's pickup truck pants party gate crasher. Although the segment was once dominated by the 'mericans, it seems everyone's checking their coat at the door in exchange for a pair of steel-toes. But those boots'll be sitting in a double-cab that'll have some 4x4 capabilities. And it'll have to, because In addition to the Robust, we're also expecting to see a full-size SUV built on the same platform to sit smack dab in the center of the Tiguan and Touareg in VW's current lineup.
