We Americans often forget that The General's Chevette was sold all over the world (as an Opel Kadett, Isuzu Gemini, or Pontiac Acadian), and the version built in New Zealand was badged as a Vauxhall Chevette. Fine car, to be sure, but the decades have not been easy on the Chevette and few survive. However, Wheels Of Satan has found this pretty straight example on the street in Christchurch and photographed it for us. Is it just me, or do those wheels look like they came from a 70s MGB? The Vauxhall VX220 is one of the forbidden fruits of the GM product portfolio we covet ferociously, and this heavily modified, 4.2-liter supercharged V8-equipped version dubbed the Caral V8XS makes it all the more painful. At 450 HP, the Jaguar-sourced motor certainly would light a fire under the slinky two-seater, but the powertrain isn't the only place upgrades happen. The entire interior gets restyled with some darn nice-looking leather and a new gauge cluster with built-in lap timer. Vauxhall, the General's proper English arm, today revealed the 2009 Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer, which is the estate version of the 2009 Vauxhall Insignia, which is also the Opel Insignia and likely the 2011 Saturn Aura. The estate, which is set to debut at the Paris Motor Show, will get two engines not available in the sedan or hatchback version. Although final power numbers haven't been released, one of the motors will be a more powerful turbodiesel and the other a smaller turbocharged gas motor. An environmentally friendly ecoFLEX Sports Tourer is also on the horizon. Personally, we'd be happy with the CDTi turbodiesel, which achieves 59.8 mpg on the Extra-urban cycle. In a piece of intriguing, if not silly, marketing, the Opel Buick Vauxhall Insignia has made a public debut after being part of an elaborate setup in London's Potters Fields park, situated in the shadow of Tower Bridge. Days ago, a mysterious crash scene was laid out in the park, complete with an alien-looking UFO and men-in-black protecting a cordoned-off area. As part of the crash cleanup, the craft was lifted out by way of crane — today that craft opened to reveal the freshly designed Insignia, which dropped onto stage from a height of 45 meters. More »

GM's Vauxhall division — the one magically appearing in New England — is poised to release a forward-looking camera in the 2009 Vauxhall Insignia, which has us wondering why nobody ever thought of it before. The camera is a clever design, engineered to identify and read signs on the roadside while moving. Why would you want such capability?
