Why does this plant sound so familiar? Well, it's probably because it's where the 2010 Chevy Camaro will be built. Although it's unknown what this second vehicle they'll be building there later this year will be, we do know it'll be rear-wheel drive. We're just wondering whether they used Red Bull or those chocolate-covered espresso beans to stay up for that marathon negotiation cram session. Although GM's idled 30 plants, for the most part they've been the trucks and SUV's. Well, except for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant which makes the Buick Lucerne and the Cadillac DTS. Oh, and also the Lordstown, Ohio plant that builds the Pontiac G5 and Chevy Cobalt. But none of those sell really fast off dealer lots anyway — so the strike's been sort of a non-event to this point. But wait, the Detroit News thinks there's trouble brewing down the road for a car that's selling like hotcakes. Which is funny as we thought the last one was supposed to be "comprehensive." Maybe the need for such a buyout becomes more clear when you view it in the light of the massive $38.7 billion charge for how it calculated certain tax assets this quarter. Well, whatever. From what we're told, many UAW members weren't happy about the new two-tier wage system that pays some manufacturing workers as little as $14 per hour and the lack of product commitment guarantees present in the GM contract. Word from both FoMoCo and the UAW is that contract negotiations are moving forward with a mutual understanding that has undercut any tension between the two organizations. At the 2008 Ford Focus launch yesterday, the happy-family atmosphere was more than just words. Mulally gave out a hug to the UAW Local president while UAW Vice President Bob King wrapped his around the shoulder of Joe Hinrichs, a lead negotiator for Ford. Forbes reports Chrysler and the United Auto Workers union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor deal, sources at both the co and the union confirmed. Sources said UAW President Ronald Gettelfinger was meeting with his bargaining committee at midday to review the proposed contract terms and that an announcement would be forthcoming.
Dunno if it's true or not — is the second pro forma strike over? Who knows. But if it is, I'm totally bummed — I was really looking forward to going on CNBC's Squawk Box tomorrow morning.
