The joint sports car effort between Toyota and Subaru has so far remained hugely secretive, but details are beginning to sneak out giving form to the highly anticipated venture. Several publications are making "informed guesses" about the basis for the car, assumed to be a shortened, two-door, two-seat version of the Subaru Legacy. Best guesses outfit the car with a 200 HP, 2.0-liter flat-four backed by a six-speed transmission and tipping the scales around 2,600 lbs. The word on all-wheel-drive is still out, but we'd bet the Subie would have it while the 'Yota may pass. Roll those specs around in your mind and try not to whisper the alphanumeric moniker "AE86." The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) is planning to install 200 electric car charging stations during fiscal 2009, with an additional 800 stations planned within the next three years, according to a report today on the Nikkei Net Interactive service. The stations, expected to cost $36,500, will utilize a TEPCO-developed quick-charge process that after a five minute charge provides enough juice for 25 miles, or 37 miles using a ten minute charge. Mitsubishi and Subaru are expected to release electric vehicles in the Japanese market next year, so dealers for both companies have signed on to receive charging stations, along with Japanese retailer and flux manufacturer Aeon. The upcoming Subieyota project holds a great many secrets, not the least of which is what the heck the thing will look like, how the proportions will work and whether the grille will look like a flying...umm...Tribeca. Ever since Toyota started riding Subaru, we'd heard the rumors. Supposedly, that sketch right there — turns the rumors to truth. That's right, we're told that there is Subaru's upcoming rear-wheel drive coupe currently in co-development with the boys at Toyota. The story goes that this "concept drawing" was revealed to Autocar, the UK car mag, by a source with some very good contacts. Apparently the source got it via a one-armed courier who'd received the sketch from a carrier pigeon. The carrier pigeon in turn had copied it with a charcoal pencil in his beak off a tattoo on the right rear hindquarter of a guy who knows a guy who's married to a gal who's an insider at Subaru. Those missing the RWD Celica's of yore can take hold of some gossip based on a rumor about the dead coupe getting revived with some mechanicals from the Subie parts bin. We never did see Tony Danza as the day closed on the 3rd Annual Japanese Classic Car Show. We did catch sight of everything from a carbon-fiber Hayabusa powered Honda Z600 to a Toyota Land Cruiser Fire Truck, and said hello to Merciless Ming himself. We also met the crew from Japanese Nostalgic Car, who rolled their Cressida Wagon onto the grass to cover the event. Having taken the Starion to the 1st and 3rd shows and the Starlet to the 2nd, it seems finding a third car for the 4th Annual JCCS may be the answer to our ongoing financial ruin.
