Attempting to prove once and for all driving cross-country quickly doesn’t require a trust fund, an ego or a BMW M5, Top Gear magazine set out this weekend to drive from New York to San Francisco — 2904 miles — on just $2904. And yes, that does include the car. More used to spending the spoils of British TV License fee payers on Dodge Challenger SRT8s, the Beeb had to enlist a little expertise in making big things happen on a small budget; Jalopnik’s own Ben Wojdyla. While it remains to be seen if "Top Gear USA" (the show) will be any good or not, or even if we’ll be getting it, we are getting TopGear USA (the website) and, so far, that looks pretty good. Just launching today, it’s still a little light on original content, but what there is — particularly the school bus demolition story — is refreshingly high quality and weaves together text, photography and video in a way the online presences of print publications often fail to do. We’re relieved by the absence of Eric Stromer from any of the editorial, but we are hoping the website will be able to find its own unique voice within the Top Gear empire and stop relying on grudging cameo appearances from Jeremy, Richard and James.
