I once loaned one to someone who took it to Spain and then loaned it to someone else who took it to San Francisco. I systematically destroyed another one with notes, dog-earing and misuse. The details are thin so far, but the tiniest SUV from the people's brand gets a three-stage turbo pushing output up to 312 HP and 319 lb-ft of torque to go along with the upgraded Dakar-style body work. Since it's coming out at SEMA it's also getting a silly and irrelevant Rockford Fostgate sound system which makes us shake our heads. Powered only by the 2.0-liter turbo mill making 200 HP and 207 lb-ft of twist, the Tiguan ends up being one of the most powerful soft-roaders in the neighborhood. It may not be our bag, but it's true. Plus, if you're a buyer electing to be honest about your vehicular needs and choose a FWD Tiguan, you can get a proper manual transaxle; drivers requiring 4Motion are saddled with only a slushbox. The sharp-looking SUV has a lot going for it, including the beloved turbocharged 2.0-Liter fourbanger found in a wide range of Audi and VW products. Unfortunately for VW, a weak dollar and features designed to meet the high expectations of the European market mean that the Tiguan is going to start at $23,850 and top out for $29,515 for the AWD version. That's about $1,700 more than the fully-equipped AWD Honda CR-V, the class leader. But VW has a plan for selling the thing: tie it to the popular VW GTI. More »

Rolling into the klieg lights will be eight new models: the Tiguan SUV, a prototype of VW's coming rear-engine city car and six BlueMotion diesels. The Tiguan we've seen, but the people's company is holding tight to the pulley ropes keeping its city car under wraps. It'll be called the City Expert, and will be powered by a flat-four "boxer" engine mounted rearward. But choosing the name of an SUV isn't quite like picking out obvious dialog for Samuel L. Jackson. More than 350,000 readers of car mags owned by the Autobild group in 10 countries chose Tiguan over such howlers as Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun (no offense to the indigenous peoples who bear those names). Then the company "pre-released" shots of the SUV wearing spy-thwarting Hyundai badges. Now, two months ahead of the Frankfurt show where it'll make its debut, the company is revealing the Tiguan as it'll look in the world's forecourts. Volkswagen's released a photo spread and new info on its upcoming Tiguan small SUV well before a proper revealing. You'll note it's still got strategically changed or blacked-out badging for dramatic effect. Named by readers in a German magazine poll, the Tiguan refers to a secret tribe of indigenous land dwellers whose jackal-like diet comprises meat products they've scrounged from Hickory Farms gift baskets picked over by their co-workers (or so we'd hoped). The pics were shot during final-phase development testing in Namibia. Notable features are an "off-road" switch that activates a set of driver-assistance systems (mainly locking diff and hill-climb assist and ABS for loose road conditions), and Volkswagen's new-generation radio and navigation system, which includes a 30 gig hard drive and back-up camera. Here's the caption from one of the pictures from yesterday's slideshow on the new VW Tiguan concept on the Times web site:

Even though it's "just" digital ink, we're relishing what was probably a spectacularly spicy thought process highlighting the friendly (and precise) m nage trois of VDub, the fabulously precise Audi, and the German side of the German-American hybrid. The Times is of course referencing that the three automakers have combined wits, like Ace & Gary, to help create the next gen of diesel power called Clean TDI, an engine system using Benz's Bluetec technology. Bluetec, of course, is the nitrogen-oxide reducing system for diesel that uses urea to clean the car's emissions. Urea, of course, is an organic compound found in urine. There's no sign of fear from the Honda CR-Vs and Toyota RAV4s of the world yet, but the V-dub entry will nonetheless encroach on their territory when the first production model rolls off the line to begin in late-2007. The junior Touareg will be based on the Rabbit's architecture (see the Golf Plus for clues and engine choices) and likely celebrate its coming-out at the Frankfurt show next fall. Whether or not the image above is the actual concept remains to be seen, but word is it'll get a similiar body kit, 22" rims and likely a lacquer-intensive paint scheme with the word "candy" in it. What we see is a new, small SUV that will take on the world's Toyota RAVs and Honda CRVs, but with a bit more of the style — and precious naming scheme — VW introduced with the Touareg. Rather than pay an identity agency to come up with a name for its upcoming Golf-based SUV, the company asked readers of Germany's AutoBild to come up with a name. The winner? It's Tiguan, a mashup of tiger and leguan (German for iguana). We'd imagine that could be the most conflicted vehicle name since the Ford Ferrethorse GT of the 1950s.
