The Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept Is A Golf That Can Go 174 MPH

The Volkswagen Golf has this weird track record of producing insane über-hatch concepts. Remember the R8-esque Design Vision GTI? Or the 650 horsepower Golf with a W12 engine? Add another one to that list: the Golf R 400 Concept.

As its name suggests, it's a Golf that has 400 horsepower. It's also a Golf that can do zero to 62 mph (100 kph) in just 3.9 seconds, and a Golf that can hit a top speed of 174 mph. Zounds!

The Golf R's 2.0-liter turbo four has turbo'd and tuned to hell and back to put out the 400 horsepower, and the car has an upgraded interior with motorsports shell seats. You also get flared fenders patterned after the 1988 Rallye Golf G60, which is badass. And it's got all-wheel drive, so it should be the nastiest Golf R ever if it is produced.

Unfortunately there are no plans for that at the moment, which is absolutely absurd because if you can't see the lucrative sales potential for a 400 horsepower Golf then you don't belong in the car business. Expect to see more at the Beijing show this weekend.
