Scion sure does know its youth demographic. Is there anything a kid enjoys more than faux graffiti designs and a talking ass cartoon character? No, not really. Scion's latest outreach to the youth market comes with a mock commercial featuring Assy McGee as a Scion xB slinging salesman—Assy is the gun-welding main character of the same-named Adult Swim cartoon. Scion is known for trying to be hip with the kids, but I have a feeling its latest concept, the Hako, is a couple steps too far, even for the spikey haired, angsty kids of America. Hako means box and this is very boxy, even more boxy than the xB. If you remember, Scion originally teased the Hako Coupe concept two weeks ago, but here she is in all of her ugly glory. Original speculation suggested that this could take the place of the xA, but something tells me that wouldn't fly too well. More »

It was like a scene from The Sting, with yours truly and Robert Farago of The Truth About Cars as the fast talking, quick thinking con men (we'll let you decide who is Newman and who is Redford). The Scion press room was surrounded with security but the awkward prize, the new Scion Hako (aka Scion tC replacement), was waiting within. Farago deftly distracts the first guard with the old "Excuse me ma'am but have you seen my puppy" trick while I used my mistakingly printed manufacturer's pass to sneak past the second one. Scion just released this teaser image of the Hako Coupe Concept, which will debut at the New York Auto Show later this month. It's expected that the Hako will represent a near-production version of 2006's Fuse concept and could replace the TC coupe. Judging by the picture, Scion are looking to bring their coupe styling more in line with their popular XB hatchback. The press release follows the jump. More »

Toyota just dropped a press release which has everyone running to their Tandy's and Apple ]['s to make sure it's still 1987. Scion will be bringing what's called the 2008 Scion tC Release Series 4.0 to the upcoming Chicago Auto Show and will be making them available as of March. The "tC RS 4.0" as the marketeers are calling it, will have an array of "VIP-themed enhancements" such as gray sparkley paint, a body kit, embroidered alcantera seating, fancy steering wheel and shift knob and special badging. Pardon our underwhelmed reaction, but it sounds like an appearance package only a 17 year-old-old could love. Prices for the Scion tC will be up a little bit in 2008, but still fall in with an under a four percent increase across all models. The stripper tC Spec model will start at 15,300 bucks for a manual, while the slightly more luxurious core model tC will trip the money clocks at 17 even. A recent stop in lovely Gorman, California for some overpriced gasoline and a bag of peanuts revealed this Chrysler TC. A ghostly sheet covered what was assuredly a fine interior, and also hinted at possible hard or soft top trouble. Out of state plates and location next to one of America's numerous yet fine numbered hotel chain and Sizzler oasis told us this TC was traveling. Not just any TC - Chrysler's TC. Oh yeah, in all of the excitement to show off the Scion's two brothers yesterday, the all-new 2008 Scion xD and the re-styled 2008 Scion xB, everyone forgot about the new-for-2008 Scion brand sales leader, the tC. Well, let's rectify that little problem, because hey — Scion's issued a press release and some PR shots. The tC gets a bit of a newer style including an upper mesh grille, and rear tail lights with a styling that'll make sure you'll be confused as to whether you'll be looking at the front or the back of the bargain-basement budget b-segment car. The tC's still got the "Fun-To-Drive Performance" provided by the 2.4-liter four cylinder VVT engine capable of humming along at 161 hp and with 162 lb-ft of torque. This year's tC, along with it's more flashy brothers, also comes standard with Apple iPod connectivity and a head unit with iPod control. No word on whether the connector cable will provide the head unit information from the iPod via a digital link like Ford's Sync system or if it'll use an analog translation system like that found with GM's PAL system. Oh and it'll also have a standard mini-aux jack in case you've got a Zune or some other form of non-iPod music device. It also comes with a first aid kit in case your ears start to bleed from pumping your music through the Pioneer speakers a wee bit too loud. Not since the debut of the Cordoba has a small Chrysler given you so much of what you needed. The TC by Maserati was the zenith of K-platform technology and truly a force to be reckoned with. You can have your Allant s, your Reattas, your etceteras and similars. But the Chryslerati? Now that, friends, predated the '70s-retro trend by close to a decade. No reserve, currently at $1,500. Plus, according to the seller, "This 1990 Chrsler Tc by Maserati is considered by many to be a collectible." And with an endorsement like that, how can you go wrong? The latest Scion limited edition model is set for a New York launch, and it's pretty damn blue about it. No it's not blue because we made the obvious joke about its color (maybe a little), it's blue because it's been painted in electric Blue Blitz Mica to set it apart from previous year's Scion tC Release Series 1.0, which was rendered in Absolutely Red. The special-edition package also includes stainless steel mesh grillework, 17-inch alloys and seat-mounted and curtain airbag options. It also comes with black Alcantara-trimmed seats, a Pioneer Premium AM/FM/CD audio system with subwoofer and XM Satellite Radio. The MSRP for all that Scionness will be $16,300 $18,260, or $1,960 over the tC's base price of $16,300. Only 2,600 units of the tC Release Series 2.0 will be blue, er, built. More »

Edmunds Inside Line is reporting on a rumor from Japan: A 250hp sport coupe from Toyota based on the Scion tC is in the works. The current Scion tC, a fun car that couldn't outrun a RAV4 filled with gravestones, could use the extra horses, and if the Japanese sources are correct, the new coupe — due in 2006 — would replace the Toyota Celica in Japan, while getting a Scion badge in the US. Power could come from a worked-over version of the current 2.4-liter for, or a new, high-performance 2.0-liter that's reportedly in development. More »
