@Slant-sick of the Mustang too: pictures 1 & 3 are good... pic # 2 is example no. 1 of what happens when a brand tries to revive a name.....
hmm.... with all the bass-ackwards retro-shit we're seeing these days... does anyone else think the "retro T-bird" came out a few years to early..?? or did it start this ungodly affair??
@chrystlubitshi: I figured the Mercury Z7 would get that response- and I don't disagree; but I have a certain amount of irrational fondness for the Fairmont/Zephyr, especially the basket-handle-esque "coupes".
@Slant-sick of the Mustang too: I just LOVE old-style chrome grills; American cars of the forties, fifties, and sixties had so much detail in the trim (the Europeans always showed more restraint -- Mercedes has used the same design idioms since the 1930s, as did Jaguar).
I guess retro today poses problems because there is nowhere to go when the next styling refresh comes around... whatever will Chevy do with the new Camaro over the next five or ten years?
Unfortunately, I suspect the Challenger and Mustang will develop "New-Beetle-itis" - they'll just get uglier, and be limited even further to one restrictive market segment. (No more desirable engines, folks. All gone.)
@FuzzyPlushroom: I didn't mean "no power", I meant "nothing interesting" (as the 2.5 develops almost as much power as the old 1.8T, but is several MPG shy; the diesel's gone altogether).
I also forgot to mention EIGHTY-NINE DIFFERENT SPECIAL EDITIONS!!!, which the Mustang's already slid into.
Well, since the current Camaro is supposed to evoke the '69 (it fails, for me, especially compared to the Challenger and Mustang, but I'm not a GM fanboy anyway), they could just proceed to lift their leg on each of the succeeding generations of mulletmobile as well, I suppose.
I'm sure they'll find some way to make it an ugly, chintzy, overcomplicated piece of crap and still sell thousands, like they always do.
@FuzzyPlushroom: And I'm sure by then they'll have fixed the third-gen.'s inherent wrenchability problems in typical GM fashion, like casting the passenger-side header and front crossmember as one piece with the starter actually inside it, for example.
@Charles_Barrett - Now with Variable-Valve Timing: Oh, those will come standard- every single 2015 Camaro "3gMkII" will be an IROC, baby! Also standard will be one (1) pair of syntho-rust Cragar wheels, genuine Lycra tiger-print seatcovers, and a microchip containing Molly Hatchet's greatest hits (Yes! Both of them!) for uploading directly to your medula oblongata.
I love black four-door sedans and the way they set off any and all chrome trim; the body-color black wheels I am having to get used to (call me old fashioned...)
W-w-wait. There's a difference between the Zephyr and the MKZ?! Somebody who speaks Detroit explain this to those of us living in the real world. I'm still trying to make heads or tails of the while Ford 500 fiasco.
Unless you got these spy photos from Ford, why would you assume they're authentic? Are we just looking at an old Zephyr with some cardboard taped to the hood?
I really do wish Ford would make a hot-rod AWD MKZ... so long as they gave it at least a 50-50 power distribution, or a proper RWD bias. I do rather like them, even if they are a bit too Fusion-ish. Give it 350-400hp and a good AWD setup, and that's a car I'd like. A lot.
@newfmike: Yeah, kinda where I'm going with that. I think Ford actually *could* make an S4 competitor, kinda like how Caddy is gunning for the E-class AMGs for a fraction of the price. Still... long ways to go before Ford is there.
@tenbeers: for the number of times we've seen this video on the beloved jalop pages of time..... i don't believe anyone has made the (now) obligatory 'bridge to nowhere' reference... so... (correct me if i'm wrong) i shall...
wow... and they say Palin tried to build a bridge to nowhere...
@chrystlubitshi: If that was the "bridge to nowhere" in Alaska, and Palin had said "no thanks", I would be coming down to the US and campaigning against her, you betcha!
@Impalamino: Square cowl-scoop = Pure WIN, the only way it could possibly be better was if it was made out of license plates! (oh and if it wasn't a Lincoln, obviously)
In '79 I was 13 and didn't have the $99 a month, so it would all have been academic to me. What I did have was a Suzuki dirt bike, and occasional access to Mom's year-old El Camino for running a mile up the road to buy eggs from the neighbor.
However even then I knew from a relative's experience that the Chevette was a reeking mass of shit.
@Vipper Of Vipp: In '79 I was 3, hooning a neon-green Big Wheel. My parents never had a Chevette, but they did have several cars that cost $99- not a month, in total.
Wow, I didn't know that Bobcats sounded, so, feeble. Wouldn't last very long in the jungle. Then again, Mercury isn't exactly on the upswing. I say, small, fuel efficient kitty's for all!
It seems like the name Chevette was doomed from the start. The UK Vauxhall Chevette was a godawful piece of shit too. With a 1256cc pushrod engine. My friends Mum had one. She drove it over a railway crossing and all the side glass fell out.
Here's one, to act as a reminder in case somebody should try and sell you one as an "exotic import"...
I was quite small as a child. I know this because I once rode in a Chevette hatchback...in the way back. I think it was smaller than the parcel shelf in a Beetle, which is saying something.

On this the scoop looks a bit crude and the tires seem either undersized or pushed too far out of the wheel wells.
Sure it's not about to be airfreighted to SEMA?
