Since I haven't really liked the look of a new car since... since... Wow, depressing. Anyway, as looks aren't important to me, I'll buy one of these in a heartbeat if it lives up to advance billing. I don't believe that weight for a second, though.
If they can actually keep it under say 2400 pounds, I'll eat a smoked ham with mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, a nice side salad, and a glass or two of a nice red table wine.
I would be cautiously optimistic about this one. Remember when they announced the 1 series and everybody was expecting a return of the 2002? It turned out the 1 series is just an overpriced slightly smaller 3 series...
If it turns out to be a Solstice with great handling and a nice interior for less than $35000 then it could be a winner.
Note Solstice pricing tops out just above $30000 and Z4 starts at $37000 (all MSRP from their respective websites, before options)
I apologize in advance for the thread-jack but this is important.
So I was reading the thread yesterday on Jalopnik that was cross-posted to Jezebel. Well I, personally, have never visited Jezebel before and had no idea what I was in for. But, damn, was I in for a pleasant surprise. After reading the cross-post I stumbled upon something amazing. Did you guys know that all they talk about over there is boobies??? Boobs this, boobs that, "My boobs are too big!" Everyone needs to read this post and just let it simmer: [jezebel.com] .
@aSoundofSleep: they have higher brain function, but they're too preoccupied with potpourri, giving each other poor diet advice, finding a man to marry, tricking him into having kids, flowered bedspreads, romance, and chick flicks.
Since this is just now coming out, chances are it was still under his watch (designs are done, on average, four years prior). As I've stated from the beginning, it's just the natural maturation of the design language, and you're just getting more used to seeing surfacing like it.
A small, light Bimmer roadster? Smaller and lighter than even a Z4?
You'd hit it, too. Don't lie.
At 2200 lb. it's lighter than a Saturn Sky/Opel GT/Pontiac Soltice (2900 lb.). Give it a decent power plant (the 3.0L from the 135 would be tasty) and BMW could really have itself a winner!
@f*cking engineerd: 3.0 liters seems like a lot for a 2200 lb car. Maybe for the performance version. I would imagine that a turbo 4-cylinder with 2.0-2.5 displacement would be enough for almost everyone.

@pauljones-Jo Schmo's saintly and opposite twin.: They may not have started the fire, but they ignited the flame surfacing which may or may not be just as bad. That is not for me to say. . .
What I love is BMW encroaches the number of models GM has as a whole, yet sells less total volume than GMT900 pickups. Yet, some internet CEO's have deemed it's product proliferation killing GM (not a list of other things). I'd say BMW shows it can be a profitable little idea to have some variants.
@rlj676-Carbon Footprint Size - Clownshoe: Yeah, but you have to make lots of good cars to have them all sell well. Not a couple good cars and a bunch of otherwise mediocre ones.
@pauljones-Jo Schmo's saintly and opposite twin.: The DTS really isn't as crappy as most people think. Granted, it doesn't turn on a dime and it isn't screwed together like a VW Phaeton, but it's actually pretty nice as long as you approach it with realistic expectations.
It also has a Northstar V8 capable of smoking the front tires going for it, as well. The only problem is that it is ancient. I am sure they could probably keep the platform around for a while longer, but it desperately needs an interior upgrade, and at the very least provision for AWD, though I doubt it's possible on that platform.
Ideally, I think that it should be replaced by a car based off of a lengthened version of the Sigma II platform, or, if nothing else, a lengthened Zeta platform. Doing so would not only make for a potentially awesome car, but would also help amortize the production and development costs of the platforms.
Sadly, it would probably not have a very good effect on the corporate average fuel economy numbers, and GM is in such a stranglehold that I doubt the car czar committee would approve of money being used to develop it.

Why do I get the feeling that 2200lbs is a bait and switch number, like a $9995 Versa? Oh sure, it'll weigh that little, as long as you don't need seats. Or glass. Or doors.
So, go ahead BMW, prove me wrong. In 2012, you'll have, well, if I'm honest, you'll have someone who would be itching to buy one, if it weren't for that pesky student debt, along with a whole bunch of other financial obligations.

Oh, and I've learned that women are just as obsessed with boobies as men.

They don't have brains, so they have to be obsessed with something.

The only mediocre cars they have left are the G5,G6, DTS, Cobalt, Torrent, and TrailBlazer.
The rest are good cars. And that's a lot:
Malibu, Silverado, Suburban, Corvette, Camaro, Tahoe, new Equinox, Lucerne, new LaCrosse, CTS, STS, SRX, Enclave, Vue, Outlook, Astra, Aura, Sky, Solstice, Sierra, Acadia, Yukon, Escalade,....
