Back in my day, we got by with just a speedo, and gas and temperature guages. And we were happy if they worked! Or worked properly (unlike my Escort's seizuring speedo)!

Gauges are the window into the soul of your machine. They should be analog, with real needles and needle-stops and lots of hashmarks to connote the possibilities that lie within.

Gauges are to be emblazoned with VDO or Smiths or Veglia or Stewart Warner, a small reminder of your machine's country of origin, and all that's best about the marque.

Gauges should be arrayed across a purposeful dashboard, conveying the status of vital functions and easily read at full chat. If they're interspersed with functional toggle and/or rocker switches, all the better.

That said, electronic clusters like the one featured in the article are another attempt at soulless engineers and soulless consumers conspiring to make our conveyances soulless as well. Unfortunately, they seem to be meeting with increased success.

    I weep for our future.

Don't worry, I'm sure Micro$oft will patent something similar soon and say they invented it first. They'll probably call it something like: Drivers Observation Station.

@maximum-sienna: Then Mac will claim to "reinvent" it, and then start trying to convince you that you have to upgrade to a new one every 9 months.

The new Range Rover got something like this:

Even though I own a blessed unit I'm well aware of Land Rover's reputation, and I don't expect the lightning will strike me again. That gauge is doomed.

@Syrax - Official Unfunny Commenter: That reminds me of the S-Class's giant LCD speedometer, which turns into Nightvision View and such. It's a bit off-putting.

If you're gonna bother with digital gauges, just have a number.

I just noticed it tells you what your carbon footprint is. Not a good idea. I would be driving around trying to get that number as big as possible. It would start a trend of "hyper-carboning".

Thank god it's not Windows based. I don't want the blue screen of death on my dash every time I hit a speed bump.

@aSoundofSleep: Yeah, it's Linux-based, so it's going to be damn near completely impossible to reconfigure on your own, but about twelve people are going to have it figured out and have the trickest dashboards you've seen...

I've been waiting for something like this for years. Seems like it should have been done a while ago. The supplier can produce one basic gage cluster and the car company (or even customer to some extent) could configure it how they want. Just change the bezels and shape for each model, but all the electronics stay the same. Then, the economies of scale on the electronics would be spread across every car to use it, regardless of manufacturer.

Or does this make too much sense?

@engineerd: But what happens if there is a nuclear holocaust, that huge EMF blast will render your gage cluster useless.

@Flathead Smith: If there's a nuclear holocaust, the gage cluster is the least of my worries.

@Vincenzo1: That's why I said change the bezel and shape. You can change the colors, fonts, and "look" of it in the software.

@Flathead Smith: Also useless would be your ECU, so your fuel injection, ignition timing, etc.; unless you're driving a '64 Impala, or something, then you're gonna get affected.
