What's that? An XFR Estate with a 5.0-liter V8 and 510 HP?! We'll just pass out now.

There's a bewildering love-hate relationship with Jaguar around here. Their cars are remarkably beautiful (if you pretend the X-Type and S-Type never existed) and supremely luxurious, but rank pretty low on the reliability scale in the pre-Ford years. It's a brand utterly vexing in its contradictions and yet we cannot help but love it despite its warts. This news of a Jaguar XF Estate is like manna from heaven, a beautiful car with a powerful engine and all the benefits of a wagon rear. Shall we all swoon now? Your Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX470 and BMW X5 will be utterly obsolete.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, just such a car will be debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and there's little standing between this car and the greatest moment in Jaguar history. A Jaguar XFR wagon, roll that around in your mind for a minute. Savor its brilliance, the perfection of concept. Imagine the Audi RS6 Avant with Indian British sensibilities. We're seriously out of our minds with lust for this perfect idea. Should this pan out, we'll be bringing you breathless coverage of the unveil when the car debuts in Germany. [4WheelsNews]

<![CDATA[2010 Jaguar XFR Launched Amid Dry Ice, Lasers]]> We've already seen the 2010 Jaguar XFR press shots, but here it is amid dry ice fog and lasers. The new 5.0-liter supercharged engine brings with it 510 HP and a 4.7 second 0-to-60 time.

“Challenging the rules and standing out from the crowd, the new XF fuses sports car styling and performance with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury sedan. It is a defining example of Jaguar's dedication to creating beautiful fast cars - and with magnificent new engines that are quite simply our best ever the XF sets new standards across the board."
Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

THE NEW 2010 MODEL YEAR AT A GLANCE

• Significant enhancements to the new Jaguar XF for 2010
• Two all-new direct-injection 5.0-liter V8 engines
• New XFR flagship joins the XF range
• New, highly-equipped XF Portfolio specification joins the range alongside XF Luxury and XF Premium Luxury models
• Upgraded features and specification across the XF range

The new XF is already acclaimed as a key element in the revitalization of the Jaguar brand, with its new generation of beautiful fast cars. But now the car that defines Jaguar sporting luxury is even better, with major powertrain changes and a wider range of models – including a stunning new, supercharged XFR.

The 2010 model year XF features all-new 5.0-liter direct-injection V8 engines. There are also significant trim and specification changes – including many new features unique to the new XFR – and the introduction of a new Portfolio derivative.

When it was introduced last year, the XF was soon recognized as a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language. It also soon became apparent that here was a car where the driving experience exceeded the expectations created by the striking appearance. Now, the new XFR takes this driving experience to new levels, shifting the balance even further towards dynamic performance while still retaining the XF’s core values as a refined and luxurious sports sedan. Power comes from an all-new 5.0-liter direct-injection supercharged V8 engine delivering 510bhp and 461lb-ft of torque. Immediately recognizable thanks to unique new 20-inch wheels, a new front end design with revised chrome air intakes, 'Supercharged' hood louvres, four polished exhaust tailpipes, an aerodynamically functional rear spoiler and side sills, the new XFR also sports discreet ‘R’ badging.

The new XFR features Active Differential Control and Adaptive Dynamics – technologies being introduced for the first time on this and the XKR sports car. The electronically controlled differential and suspension system work together to optimize traction under hard acceleration and cornering – highly appropriate for a car that offers an electronically limited top speed of 155mph and reaches 60mph from standstill in just 4.7 seconds. The XFR also adds a faster steering ratio and uses the XF’s largest ventilated disc brakes – although every version of the XF with the new, more powerful engines features upgraded braking specification.

The attributes that marked out the XF at launch are still very much new and in the public eye. The four-door XF has the visual excitement of a coupe, but room inside for five adults to enjoy an interior wholly contemporary in style yet uniquely Jaguar.

"The new XF challenges the rules and redefines Jaguar sporting luxury. Our designers and engineers work together to develop elegant, inspired solutions to complex technical challenges. It’s a simple but very effective philosophy and the result is great new products like the XFR."
Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

Simplicity and clever use of space are key to the XF's interior design and this is unchanged in the new generation. For the driver, this is centered on the compact packaging of the JaguarDrive Selector™ transmission interface. The beautiful cast alloy Selector has already gained recognition for its part in the distinctive XF 'welcoming handshake’; a sequence in which the illuminated stop/start button pulsates like a heartbeat until pressed, when the JaguarDrive Selector™ rises into the driver’s hand and the rotating fascia vents silently open.

Features such as this have already attracted more than 30,000 customers to the new XF – and now, in many instances, they have been enhanced even further. The combination of aluminum dashboard, satin or gloss wood veneers, tailored instrument and door panels with twin-needle stitching as standard, plus Phosphor Blue halo illumination and interior mood lighting, set the XF’s cabin as far apart from its competitors as its exterior styling.

Customers seeking luxury appointments should look to the new Portfolio specification. Available with the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, the Portfolio model includes ultimate craftsmanship details such as contrast stitching on leather trim, Jaguar Suedecloth Premium headlining, deep-pile carpet mats with contrast edging and embroidered logos, unique veneer and ventilated heated and cooled seats.

But it is the new powertrain options that are at the heart of the changes for 2010 model year. The all-new 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III engines – in 385bhp/380lb-ft of torque naturally aspirated and 510bhp/461lb-ft supercharged 'R' guise – add an entirely new, even more sporting dimension to the XF range.

These new engines are Jaguar's most efficient ever, and they deliver power and performance at a higher level across the board. In the case of the supercharged engine, compared to the 4.2-liter V8, power has increased by a remarkable 23 percent and torque by 12 percent.

The result in the new XFR is a 0-60mph sprint time of just 4.7 seconds (0-100kph in 4.9 seconds). More relevant in everyday driving, an excellent indicator of XFR’s great flexibility is the time it takes to accelerate from 50-70mph – just 1.9 seconds.

The comparisons for the naturally aspirated engine are equally impressive. Power is increased by 29 percent and torque by 25 percent. The benchmark 0-60mph acceleration time is 5.5 seconds (0-100kph in 5.7 seconds) – some 0.8 seconds quicker than the 4.2 XF. Better still, these improvements are achieved without hindering fuel economy and emissions performance. The new engines meet US ULEV II/Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions regulations.

And alongside these new engines, the naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 engine will continue to play a key role for the XF and will be available starting January 2009. Customers will be able to order the latest naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 versions of the new XF range from January 2009. The 510bhp supercharged V8 XFR will be available to order from February 2009.

Jaguar Cars, Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll confirms:

“Whether it is the craftsmanship of the Portfolio or the purposeful, performance-oriented styling and engineering of the new XFR, every new XF delivers outstanding levels of luxury, dynamics and technology.”

THE NEW 2010 XF

INTRODUCING THE NEW XFR

When the first customers took delivery of their XF in March of 2008, they became the owner of a Jaguar that fuses sports car styling and performance with the refinement, features and space of a premium luxury sedan.

And although launched only a year ago, the XF has already collected an astonishing number of accolades, such as Best Premium Car Interior from Ward’s Auto, Popular Mechanics' Best Luxury Vehicle Award and a privileged place on Car and Driver’s 10Best Cars for 2009. These honors are recognition of a car that combines innovation with leading edge design. Contemporary, individual and beautifully crafted, with excellent performance, refined powertrains and outstanding driving dynamics, the XF pushes the boundaries of Jaguar’s new design language. It is also an unequivocally modern car that makes intelligent use of advanced technology and as a result has accelerated Jaguar’s acceptance to a much broader audience of luxury car customers.

Now Jaguar has moved the game on again. The highlights of the new 2010 model year XF include a new flagship – the stunning, supercharged XFR – two all-new V8 engines and significant trim and specification changes.

The new XFR is the first XF to carry the ‘R’ badge, which defines Jaguar’s most performance-focused models. Powered by an all-new supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine developing 510bhp and 461lb-ft of torque, the XFR is huge step forward for the XF. Compared to the supercharged 4.2-liter V8, power has increased by a remarkable 23 percent and torque has increased by 12 percent.

This mighty new engine gives the XFR a 0-60mph time of only 4.7 seconds (0-100kph in 4.9 seconds). More relevant in everyday driving, an excellent indicator of the XFR’s great flexibility is the time it takes to accelerate from 50-70mph – just 1.9 seconds.

Better still, these improvements are achieved without penalty compared to the previous generation of supercharged engine: the combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures are comparable to the supercharged 4.2-liter engine it replaces. The new engine also meets US ULEV II/Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions regulations.

The new XFR demonstrates Jaguar's commitment to delivering exhilarating performance and outstanding dynamics for the driving enthusiast – the ‘Fast’ part of the Jaguar ethos of designing, engineering and manufacturing 'Beautiful, Fast Cars'. And, it is Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum and his team that have worked to finesse the 'Beautiful'.

“Every XF is distinguished by its dramatic styling, flowing lines and coupe-like appearance but the new XFR is the ultimate sporting execution of that design language. It has superb

proportions, better than any of its rivals, with a wide track and confident stance.”
Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars

The enhanced exterior styling of the XFR moves those sporting credentials on even further, to deliver the ultimate expression of Jaguar’s new sedan design language - carrying a number of design cues that are intrinsic to Jaguar’s ‘R’ car philosophy. Its unique new front-end design has a larger lower grille with new black-finished mesh, plus chrome outboard air intakes. The upper mesh grille retains XF’s bright finish, while the XFR’s unique hood carries bold and distinctive louvres, like those on the XKR.

XFR also features bold new sill extensions, while the rear bumper adds a unique body-colored lower spoiler incorporating the ‘R’ signature of four large, bright-finished tail pipes. The new rear spoiler not only makes the XFR instantly recognizable but also has a significant aerodynamic effect. Developed in conjunction with the new front bumper design, it further improves XFR’s front/rear lift balance, and therefore its high-speed stability. A new exterior mirror design also offers aerodynamic improvements, plus improved functionality with its LED side repeaters.

The XFR’s sporting character is clearly apparent in the 20-inch Nevis alloy wheels that are fitted as standard – the only car in its class to offer this size of wheel as standard specification. Those twin-seven-spoke wheels bear the wording ‘Jaguar Supercharged’ embossed around their centers, and are wrapped tightly around silver-grey brake calipers, which carry the evocative ‘R’ logo. The R badge also appears on the right-hand side of the trunk lid drop panel, to complete the XFR’s external visual identity.

The interior design theme is modern and individual. The cabin environment is uniquely Jaguar and in XFR more unique details hint at the car’s performance. It features a full soft grain leather interior as standard, with four color choices – Warm Charcoal, Warm Charcoal/Red Zone, Warm Charcoal/London Tan, and Ivory; and a new Dark Oak veneer is the standard finish for the XFR’s wood-trimmed areas. Its new 18x14-way adjustable sports seats have newly shaped electrically adjustable squab bolsters for significantly improved support at higher cornering speeds. Each XFR seat, front and rear, has the ‘R’ logo embossed on its squab and the front seats have leather seat-back map pockets. The lower steering wheel spoke is also leather trimmed, with its own ‘R’ logo.

The fascia introduces a unique, dark mesh aluminum finish, and another discreet ‘R’ badge on the passenger side of the instrument panel. The speedometer and tachometer have the unique sporting signature of red dial pointers and carry the ‘Supercharged’ motif. And at start-up, the ‘R’ logo appears on the Touch-screen as part of the XFR ‘driver handshake’ sequence.

The XF is a car packed with user-friendly technologies. Features that distinguish include full shift-by-wire transmission controlled by the JaguarDrive Selector™, plus cruise control with Automatic Speed Limiter. The optional radar-based Blind Spot Monitor warns the driver when there is another vehicle nearby in a different lane, and XF’s optional Rear Camera Parking Aid provides a clear view of the area behind the car on the color Touch-screen while reversing. That touch-screen is now upgraded with on-screen guidance lines that move according to steering wheel angle to indicate the area into which the car will reverse.

A significant number of enhancements have been made above and beyond the impressive features in the 2008 XF. The new XF’s navigation system now includes turn-by-turn instructions in the message center, clearly indicating the route with a combination of junction icon, distance countdown details and the street or road name. An Acoustic Laminated Windscreen is a new standard feature on every XF.

Comfort, luxury and craftsmanship continue to be XF trademarks. Multi-way adjustable power seats are standard on all models, with the option of actively ventilated heated and cooled seats and a heated steering wheel. XF’s impressive range of audio options is topped by an exclusive optional sound system, the Bowers & Wilkins 440W system with Dolby® ProLogic® II surround sound and no fewer than 14 speakers. And XF’s Portable Audio Interface allows simple, direct connection of iPod® and MP3 players with full control via the Touch-screen or steering wheel-mounted controls.

JaguarSense™ allows touch-sensitive operation for the glovebox release and interior lights – and those lights feature soft, Phosphor Blue interior mood lighting with Halo illumination around key switch packs to ensure easy and positive night-time operation. The new XF also adds Digital and SIRIUS Satellite Radio – with HD radio as an option.

THE ALL-NEW AJ-V8 GEN III ENGINES

The supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that powers the new XFR is Jaguar's new flagship engine, but it is only half of the engine story – a naturally-aspirated version of the all-new engine brings additional advanced technologies and performance to other models in the XF range.
AJ-V8 Gen III engine technology at a glance

• New AJ-V8 Gen III engines are more compact, more efficient and much more powerful
• Two versions of the all-new 5.0-liter V8 engine:
o 385bhp, 380lb-ft of torque, 264g/km CO2, 25.4mpg combined fuel economy (naturally aspirated – the Gen III)
o 510bhp, 461lb-ft of torque, 292g/km CO2, 22.5mpg combined fuel economy (supercharged – the Gen III R)
• Conforms to US ULEV II emissions regulations
• High efficiency, sixth-generation twin vortex supercharger on Gen III R engine
• Central spray-guided direct-injection increases efficiency and torque
• Torque-actuated variable camshaft timing on all four camshafts for improved response and efficiency
• Cam profile switching in naturally aspirated engine
• Variable-geometry inlet manifold on naturally aspirated engine further increases low and high-end torque
• Low-friction design optimizes fuel consumption
• 15,000-mile service intervals compared to 10,000-mile intervals on 4.2-liter models

Generations of powerful yet refined engines have played a crucial role over the years in establishing the unique character of Jaguar cars. Now, two all-new direct-injection engines continue that tradition for the XF, delivering increased power and torque with comparable emissions and fuel consumption. The first is the all-new 510bhp, 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III R supercharged V8, also available in naturally aspirated form producing 385bhp.

Light, robust and very strong
The new V8 engines are built around a stiff, all-new, aluminum block with cast-in iron liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. For the first time at Jaguar the blocks are high-pressure die-cast, providing a superior finish and greater dimensional accuracy. The engines use aluminum heads, with four valves per cylinder and strong, spheroidal-graphite cast-iron crankshafts and forged steel connecting rods. The cylinder heads for the first time are specified with a secondary (recycled) aluminum alloy thus reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing the new engine.

The new 5.0-liter direct-injection engines are more compact than their predecessors. Overall engine length has been reduced by 0.94-in. by relocation of the oil pump within the engine architecture. This length reduction improves engine bay packaging in support of enhanced safety cell performance while ensuring overall engine weight is virtually unchanged.

Jaguar’s all-new V8s have been designed in-house, using the expertise of powertrain engineers at Jaguar’s advanced research and development centre at Whitley, Coventry, UK.

Malcolm Sandford, Engine Group Chief Engineer, explains the concept behind the project:

“The emphasis was on delivering efficiency, superior dynamic response and highly accessible low-end torque suited to real-world driving, without compromising power at higher engine speeds.”

The results are clear to see. Performance has been increased by 29 percent and 23 percent (87 and 94bhp) on both naturally aspirated and supercharged engines yet both the naturally aspirated and supercharged engines meet US ULEV II emissions regulations. Despite the significant increases in power, CO2 emissions of the naturally aspirated engine are comparable to the 4.2-liter V8, and the supercharged engine produces two percent less CO2 than its predecessor.

Industry-first direct injection - power with economy
One of the key features of the new engines is an industry-first, centrally-mounted, multi-hole, spray-guided fuel injection system. This substantially contributes to improved low-speed, dynamic response. The positioning of the injectors ensures fuel is precisely delivered to the center of the combustion chamber, maximizing air-fuel mixing, and improving combustion control. Fuel is delivered via twin, high-pressure fuel pumps that are driven via an auxiliary shaft in the all-new engine block.

The charge-cooling effects of the direct-injection fuel system have allowed the compression ratio of the naturally aspirated engine to be raised to 11.5:1, further improving the engine economy. The supercharged engine also benefits from an increase from 9.1:1 on the previous 4.2-liter version to 9.5:1.

During the engine warm-up phase, the combustion system employs multiple injection mode strategies to deliver 50 percent more heat for fast catalyst warm-up and substantially reduced emissions.

Torque-actuated Variable Camshaft Timing improves efficiency
A new type of variable camshaft timing system (VCT) introduces another new technology. The four VCT units are activated by the positive and negative torques generated by opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves, instead of by oil pressure. This has allowed the engine oil pump to be reduced in size, saving energy and reducing fuel consumption.

VCT units work independently on all four camshafts with 62 degrees of authority on the inlet cams and 50 degrees of authority on the exhaust cams. Timing is optimized by the engine control unit for torque, power and economy at every point in the engine’s speed range.

The response rate of the new VCT units is up to three times faster than before, with actuation rates in excess of 150 degrees per second. This delivers a more immediate engine response to the driver’s demand.

The naturally aspirated engine is also equipped with camshaft profile switching (CPS) on the inlet camshaft. Depending on the engine’s running conditions and the demands of the driver, the CPS will switch between a profile that is ideal for low-speed driving and another which gives increased valve lift for high performance.

Variable Inlet Manifold optimizes torque through the rev range
A new variable inlet manifold (VIM) can vary the length of its eight inlet tracts to optimize power and torque throughout the rev range on the naturally aspirated engine. Vacuum-operated actuators open valves to select a longer, 27-in., inlet tract at low revs, increasing the rate of both the airflow and the engine torque. As the revs climb beyond 4700rpm, the actuators select a shorter, 14-in. path allowing a greater volume of air into the engine to optimize engine power. The actuator position is optimized by the engine control unit for improved torque throughout the engine speed range.

Reducing friction – something for nothing
Minimizing internal friction is key to improving fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and as such was a key aim when it came to the design of the engines. As a result, the new Jaguar AJ-V8 Gen III engines achieve another best in class, setting a new industry benchmark for cranktrain efficiency.

All engine bearings were the subject of an extensive optimization program, reducing friction without compromising reliability. Diamond-Like Carbon Coating (DLC) has been used to reduce friction on the fuel pump tappets and a solid film lubricant has been used to coat the piston skirts.

Jaguar has developed a unique, intelligent oil-pump pressure relief valve (PRV) which senses oil pressure deep in the engine’s oil galleries to control the oil pump delivery. As a result, oil pump frictional losses are reduced during the warm-up period. New engine oil has a lower viscosity, contributing to an extension in service intervals from 10,000 miles to 15,000 miles or 12 months. Both V8 engines are now fitted with an electronic oil level sensor feature for added peace of mind.

Unique, Jaguar sound quality
Sound quality is a key characteristic of all Jaguars and is one particular aspect that customers relish. With that in mind, Jaguar engineers have deliberately accentuated the acoustic feedback into the cabin in order to further increase driving pleasure.

The XFR has received special attention to deliver the required V8 intake sound character commonly absent on supercharged engines. Intake manifold pressure pulsations are fed into an acoustic filter at the rear of the engine that is tuned to "tenor C", with the output from the filter ducted into the cabin. The filter is controlled by the engine management system which allows the acoustics to enter the cabin only under certain conditions, such as when the engine is accelerating hard, thus maintaining the desired sound quality at all times.

New supercharger – more for less
A sixth-generation, twin vortex system (TVS) supercharger is fitted to the XFR’s 510bhp engine. It is a compact Roots-type unit, feeding air through twin intercoolers, which in turn are water-cooled by their own discreet cooling circuit. The high helix rotor design improves the supercharger thermodynamic efficiency by 16 percent. It also improves noise quality to the point where the unit is now virtually inaudible (making supercharger whine a thing of the past). The intercoolers reduce the temperature of the pressurized intake-air and so optimize power and efficiency.

The new air intake has been radically redesigned compared to the previous V8. The intake air path is a direct feed to the supercharger inlet from the centrally mounted front throttle body. Air is delivered through twin air boxes, which reduce flow loss and further increase efficiency.

Mechanically, the new supercharger and its intercoolers are efficiently packaged in the ‘V‘ of the engine to deliver a low overall engine height in support of pedestrian safety requirements.

Advanced six-speed transmissions
The all-new 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III engines transmit power through an enhanced version of Jaguar’s acclaimed ZF 6HP28 electronically controlled, six-speed transmission. Additional clutch plates and an upgraded torque converter have been added for the supercharged V8 to facilitate the extra power.

The transmission has a fully-adaptive shift system which delivers extremely smooth gear changes and optimizes performance and economy at all times. It also continually adapts to suit driving style, which can vary from sporting to more economical. The ‘mechatronic’ control module incorporated inside the transmission includes the software for the semi-automatic Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM function, selected when the driver operates either of the two steering-wheel paddles.

The high levels of torque produced by the new engines make it possible for the torque converter lock-up feature of the transmission to be used even at low speeds, without slip. This approach provides an additional fuel consumption saving, contributing to the official combined fuel economy of 22.5mpg in the XFR and 25.4mpg in the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8-powered XF. The advanced design of the transmission includes a torsional damper to absorb firing impulses from the engine, further smoothing the driveline. The transmission is designed to be maintenance-free and the fluid is ‘filled-for-life.’

Stunning performance and dynamism
The headline advances of Jaguar’s new engines are hugely significant and impressive. They take Jaguar’s philosophy of ‘intelligent power’ to another new level and that means instant responses, seamless power and smooth, refined performance with no compromise to fuel efficiency – all thanks to intelligent use of the most advanced technologies. And, of course, in XFR guise, it makes for the quickest XF yet.

Mike Cross, Vehicle Integrity Chief Engineer, explains the significance of the powertrain changes in the 2010 XF range:

“Instant response, seamless power delivery and smooth refined performance characterize the new XF V8 engines. The awesome 510bhp supercharged V8 engine in the XFR delivers thrilling performance to satisfy the most demanding drivers. Allied to a class-leading automatic transmission featuring Jaguar’s lightning-quick Sequential Shift system and advanced technologies such as the new Active Differential Control and Adaptive Dynamics, the XFR offers an exhilarating driving experience, yet one that is still accessible to everyone.”

In line with the additional performance, XFR adopts the largest brakes fitted to the XF range, with 14.9-in. diameter internally ventilated front discs. XFR’s unique 20-inch wheels and tires were specifically chosen to enhance the dynamic character of the car, and in particular to optimize wet weather grip.

Jaguar’s Emergency Brake Assist is standard on XF and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is now available as an option on all 5.0-liter models. Advanced Emergency Brake Assist is a new attribute of the ACC system on the new 5.0 V8 models; it uses the ACC radar to calculate distance from and speed of approach to the vehicle ahead and pre-charges the brake-line pressure to minimize impact speed if a collision is predicted – as well as giving an audible warning to the driver.

To improve handling and steering responses, the XFR is fitted with a ‘fast ratio’ steering rack, and additionally benefits from the further improved front-to-rear aerodynamic balance offered by a new rear spoiler and deeper front bumper. This is a significant gain as XF’s lift balance was already best in class, and its low overall aerodynamic drag coefficient of only 0.29Cd contributes to both low wind noise and inherent high-speed stability.

The XF’s body shell is already extremely stiff - in fact the stiffest in its class. This is key to the XF delivering superb ride and handling based on taut body control and precise, responsive steering. The bodyshell for the new 10 Model Year XF is even stiffer, thanks to a new rear subframe and the adoption of a trunk cross-brace that was previously only fitted to the XF Supercharged model.

Latest computer-controlled suspension and differential
The biggest changes in chassis dynamics for the XFR, however, come from two new advanced technologies, Adaptive Dynamics and Active Differential Control – which are both incorporated as standard.

Active Differential Control (ADC) with traction-only functionality and handling functionality is an electronically controlled alternative to the traditional, wholly mechanical differential, offering more subtle control strategies.

ADC can vary its locking torque (and therefore the proportion of torque to each driven wheel) depending on surface conditions and power applied. Its control strategies optimize traction at each wheel, improving acceleration on low-grip surfaces while also enhancing cornering ability. ADC has no adverse effect on either refinement or stability – where the traditional, mechanical differential can compromise stability under hard applications of power, demanding more corrective input from the driver. Whereas a mechanical differential is permanently active, the XFR’s new ADC system is switched off when not required, so unlike the mechanical alternative, it does not risk undesirable understeer, and creates no issues with NVH at low speeds.

The differential is operated by an internal electric motor and ‘ball-and-ramp’ mechanism, and contains a multi-plate clutch, which transmits or ‘vectors’ torque to the wheel with most grip. The multi-plate clutch assembly is designed to prevent excessive differential slip, but differs fundamentally from a conventional traction control which uses the brakes to counteract slip after it has occurred.

Adaptive Dynamics is a highly sophisticated active damping system which automatically adjusts suspension damper settings to suit both road conditions and the way in which the car is being driven. By removing the need for compromise between a fixed, softer setting for ride comfort and a fixed, firmer setting for tauter body control and handling, Adaptive Dynamics allows the balance between ride and handling to be optimized whatever the circumstances. Unlike earlier systems with only a small number of steps in the damper settings, it offers a progressively variable damping strategy between wide extremes, to deliver a comfortable but sporty ride with impressively sharp handling.

The three primary functions of Adaptive Dynamics are to control vertical movement, roll rate and pitch rate of the body. It does this by analyzing induced body motions one hundred times a second, and setting each damper to an appropriate level in order to maintain a constant and level body attitude, thereby optimizing control without compromising ride. Also one hundred times a second, it predicts the roll-rate due to steering inputs, and selectively increases damping forces to reduce that roll-rate – improving handling feel and driver confidence – as well as analyzing fore and aft pitch rate due to throttle and braking inputs, and again varies damping forces to reduce pitch, further improving comfort and control.

Additionally, Adaptive Dynamics improves ride by monitoring wheel position five hundred times a second and automatically increasing damping rate as the suspension approaches the limits of its travel. Similarly, it controls wheel ‘hop’ by varying damping to move any wheel out of a natural bouncing frequency, again benefiting ride comfort, handling, and even grip.

XFR also features Handling Functionality, which is unique in this class. In conjunction with the DSC OFF option and JaguarDrive Control™ with Dynamic Mode, this supplements all the advantages of Traction Only Functionality with a number of more driver-focused dynamic characteristics. Dynamic Mode (which is standard on the new naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8) modifies the throttle, stability and transmission parameters, and on XFR only it also modifies the Adaptive Dynamics responses. The combination of ADC and Dynamic mode with DSC OFF allows controllable power-on oversteer, and improves off-throttle stability, allowing quicker, more spirited cornering. It can also improve stability in situations such as an emergency lane-change maneuver at high speed and, in combination with DSC, reduce the brake interventions which the more enthusiastic driver might see as intrusive.

So, working with DSC, the TCS traction control system and ABS braking function, ADC can significantly improve overall vehicle performance, and provide even more precise driving feel. Together with its very high performance potential, that is what defines the new XFR as a perfect home for Jaguar’s ‘R’ philosophy, and the sportiest of all XF models.

XF Portfolio – taking luxury a little further
An XF Portfolio is about taking the details that define luxury a little further. Every XF is designed to make its owner feel special. Every XF combines the practical appeal of refinement and space with the emotional appeal of luxurious interiors, intelligently chosen features and exceptional craftsmanship.

The new Portfolio option offers the most luxurious XF specification and features the naturally aspirated version of the new 5.0-liter V8. As well as offering all the features of the Premium Luxury level, the Portfolio is subtly distinguished by its new 20 inch Senta alloy wheels. Inside, it adds 16-way by 12-way actively ventilated heated and cooled front seats, with leather seat back map pockets, and it introduces a luxurious Suedecloth premium headlining. On the door top-rolls and instrument panel, the Portfolio adds the further craftsmanship touch of contrast color twin-needle stitching, and underfoot it adds premium carpet mats with contrast edge binding and embroidered Jaguar logos.

The Portfolio also adds a unique veneer – Figured Ebony – contrast stitching and an extended color palette, all giving maximum customer choice and opportunity for personalization.

Beyond the unique performance and luxury alternatives of the XFR and Portfolio models, the new XF also offers distinctive new identifying details, including new alloy wheel styles. The 20-inch Nevis wheels are unique to XFR, while the new 19-inch Artura wheels are available in an optional chrome finish.

The use of intelligent technologies on the new XF contributes to extended service intervals (up to 15,000 miles), now monitored by a new Service Interval Indicator. These new engines offer dipstick-free monitoring with oil level sensing, and XF also now offers a Brake Pad Wear function.

So more than ever, the new XF, XF Portfolio and XFR challenge the rules, delivering that unique Jaguar personality summed up in the two words: ‘Sporting Luxury’. The new range offers a superb blend of performance, value for money and contemporary desirability, which means Jaguar’s acclaimed XF has now moved even further ahead of its rivals in the sports sedan market.

<![CDATA[2010 Jaguar XFR: A Powerful Pussycat]]> The 2010 Jaguar XFR will officially debut at the Detroit Auto Show, but the loose lips at 4WheelsNews have leaked the photos and details of the 510 HP supercharged pussycat.

The 2010 Jaguar XFR, the sporty iteration of the sleek Jaguar XF sedan, will be getting a significant boost in both the power and visual prowess departments. According to the source, the power boost comes from a supercharged 5.0-Liter V8 capable of 510 HP and 460 lb-ft of torque. This represents enough juice to propel the car's passengers to 60 MPH from a cold start in just 4.7 seconds with an electronically-limited top speed of 155 MPH.

The aesthetic boost comes from a new front bumper, an angry-looking hood complete with scoops and vents, a new four-pipe exhaust integrated into the rear bumper, revised sills and a dash of chrome. On the inside, the sporty jag gets a mix of R-themed trim upgrades and new sport buckets designed to keep drivers and friends in place. There's no information on price as of yet, but we think it's the wrong question to ask.

<![CDATA[2010 Jaguar XF S Diesel Better, Faster, Gets 35 MPG]]> Our spoiled European brethern will soon be able to get the slinky Jaguar XF four-door coupe in diesel trim with 440 lb-ft of torque, quicker-than-V8 performance and 35 MPG US.

In theory, the 2010 Jaguar XF S was fitted with a diesel V6 in order to help raise the brand's eco cred and lower their C02 emissions. In reality, the XF S gets enough torque to push the luxury saloon to the 60 MPH mark in less than six seconds, faster than the normally aspirated V8 version and less than a second slower than the supercharged V8.

The new 3.0-Liter twin-tubro AJ-V6D engine offers a 16% increase in power and 15% increase in torque, helping to lower the 0-60 MPH time by nearly two seconds and stretching the top speed to the 155 MPH electronically limited level while at the same time increasing mileage by 12% over the smaller engine. Me-ow. Of course, you can't get one here.

Full details, if you can stand it, in the press release below.

THE NEW JAGUAR XF DIESEL S
"The new XF V6 Diesel S – combining superb performance and excellent fuel economy – sets the pace with acceleration from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, a maximum speed of 155mph, yet delivers an average fuel consumption of 42mpg and CO2 emissions of 179g/km: Truly the best of both worlds!"
Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

THE NEW XF DIESEL S – In Brief

* The most advanced, powerful and efficient Jaguar diesel ever
* New 275PS high-performance XF Diesel S featuring Jaguar's new AJ-V6D Gen III S 3.0-litre diesel engine delivering a massive 600Nm of torque
* 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds, 50-70mph in just 3.2 seconds and a maximum speed of 155mph, yet combined fuel economy of 42.0mpg – 12 percent better than the acclaimed 2.7-litre V6 diesel engine
* Emits just 179g/km – a 10 percent reduction in CO2. Conforms to EU5 emission regulations using conventional exhaust after-treatment
* 33 percent more powerful and 61 percent more torque from 1500rpm than the 2.7-litre V6 diesel

"With CO2 emissions of 179g/km, 42mpg average fuel economy and 0-60mph acceleration in 5.9 seconds, this is another great example of Jaguar delivering unrivalled performance while at the same time taking the level of refinement in diesel engines to a whole new level."
Mick Mohan, Jaguar Programmes Director

When it was introduced last year, the XF was recognised as a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language. It also soon became apparent that here was a car where the driving experience exceeded the expectations created by the striking appearance. Now, the new XF Diesel S takes this driving experience to new levels, shifting the balance even further towards dynamic performance while still retaining the XF's core values as a refined and luxurious sports saloon.

Distinguished by 19 inch wheels, an aerodynamic boot lid spoiler and discreet 'S' badging, the car that defines Jaguar sporting luxury is even better for the 2010 model year, with a stunning new high-performance diesel. Powered by a 275PS engine, the Diesel S gives the XF outstanding levels of performance, accelerating from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds, 1.8 seconds quicker than the excellent 2.7-litre model. In-gear acceleration is equally impressive, with a 50-70mph time of just 3.2 seconds. Maximum speed is electronically limited to 155mph.

Featuring parallel sequential turbochargers to help deliver the high levels of power and torque seamlessly and with effortless flexibility, this engine is perfectly matched to Jaguar's sophisticated six-speed ZF 6HP28 automatic transmission.

"The new parallel sequential turbocharger system on our new V6 diesel delivers V8 levels of performance from very low revs. It's a power unit that offers superb flexibility and remarkably low fuel consumption and emissions, while building on the refinement that has become a trademark of our Jaguar diesel engines."
Ron Lee, Group Chief Engineer, Powertrain

There is an equally impressive 240PS version of the new 3.0-litre engine available too, which produces 16 percent more power and a 15 percent increase in torque over the 2.7-litre diesel, allowing the XF to reach 60mph in 6.7 seconds. Its 50-70mph time of just 3.7 seconds is only fractionally slower than the 275PS Diesel S model. Maximum speed is 149mph. And like the 275PS engine, these great performance leaps are achieved with combined average fuel consumption of 42.0mpg – an improvement on the 2.7-litre diesel of over 10 percent – and a CO2 emissions rating of only 179g/km.

There are also significant trim and specification changes – including many new features – and the introduction of a new luxurious Portfolio derivative as part of the core range. For Jaguar and the new 2010 model year XF, the high-performance diesel has truly arrived.

The acclaimed XF 2.7 Diesel has won several accolades, including in the UK What Car magazine's 'Diesel Car of the Year' and 'Car of the Year', What Diesel magazine's 'Diesel Car of the Year' and the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers' Best Diesel of 2008.

The new AJ-V6D Gen III engine – In detail

Drawing on the experience gained in designing the original, acclaimed 2.7-litre engine, the new 3.0-litre AJ-V6D Gen III diesels demonstrate that it is possible to deliver improved performance, while reducing CO2 emissions and fuel economy. In the XF, the new engine produces 10 percent less CO2 than the 2.7-litre, while power has increased by 33 percent in Diesel S guise. As well as tackling CO2, the new 3.0-litre engines meet the forthcoming EU5 regulations, due to come into force at the start of 2011. And these great performance leaps are achieved with combined average fuel consumption in both models of 42.0mpg – an improvement on the 2.7-litre engine of 12 percent.

Twin-turbos – maximum efficiency, instant response

A key feature of the new engine is the unique, parallel sequential turbocharger system, the first of its type to be fitted to a V-engine anywhere in the world. Delivering high torque throughout the entire engine rev range, improved throttle response and low CO2 emissions, the twin-turbochargers work sequentially to deliver unrivalled response and best-in-class torque – an impressive 61 percent more than the 2.7-litre diesel from 1500rpm – while packing a huge punch at higher engine speeds.

For most day-to-day driving, including motorway cruising, a responsive, variable-geometry primary turbocharger does all the work, while the smaller, fixed-geometry, secondary turbo is dormant, saving energy and improving efficiency. When the engine revs climb above 2800rpm, the secondary turbo is brought on line within 300 milliseconds, smoothly and seamlessly boosting the engine output with no discernible turbo-lag or power-step.

Driving a turbocharger requires pressure from the exhaust, creating pumping losses in the engine and increasing fuel consumption. To alleviate this, valves under the control of the engine management system isolate the secondary turbocharger both from the exhaust stream and the engine inlet tract when it is not required.

Some twin-turbo systems rely on a smaller turbo for primary use, only using a larger turbo when higher power is required. Though effective, this has the disadvantage of raised exhaust pressure and increased pumping losses. The Jaguar system uses a larger, variable-geometry turbocharger more of the time, which not only reduces pumping losses, but also improves fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Jaguar engineers particularly focussed on the issue of turbocharger 'lag' at low engine speeds. The new AJ-V6D Gen III 3.0-litre diesels significantly out-perform their rivals by delivering 500Nm of torque in only 500 milliseconds from idle.

Third-generation commonrail

A new commonrail fuel-injection system delivers up to five injections on each cycle at a pressure of 2000bar. Each injector tip is perforated by seven holes through which finely atomised fuel is sprayed into the cylinders. The high-pressure injection increases power, improves economy and reduces both CO2 and particulate emissions. New, third-generation high-speed piezo injectors allow up to five precise injection events during each combustion cycle, minimising engine combustion noise.

Piezo crystal 'packs' operate each injector by expanding when an electric current is passed through them. They react virtually instantaneously but can make a distinctive click when fired, which can add to diesel engine noise at idle. The crystals in Jaguar's new injectors are fitted nearer the tip, meaning they are mounted deeper inside the engine providing better sound insulation and quieter operation.

Another new feature of the third-generation fuel-injection system is the metering mode. Traditional diesel commonrail fuel pumps oversupply the injectors, with the surplus being returned to the fuel tank. During this process, fuel temperature increases and cooling it again consumes considerable amounts of energy. In metering mode, the pump delivers fuel to the injectors only at the rate required. Consequentially, there is no rise in fuel temperature and no wasted energy.

Compact, light and clean

The two cylinder heads, with four valves per cylinder, are made from aluminium and the cylinder block is made from compact graphite iron (CGI). The higher tensile strength of CGI makes it possible to cast a smaller block; some 80mm shorter than a conventional 'grey' cast iron equivalent.

The new, water-cooled, exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR), important for reducing pumping losses and emissions of NOx in a diesel engine, is more efficient and consumes less power than the 2.7-litre unit. The valves that allow exhaust gas into the system are located on the 'hot side' of the engine nearest the exhaust manifolds; these valves never cool while the engine is running, so there is no condensation of combustion deposits which occurs on engines fitted with 'cold side' valves, hence the EGR system always works at maximum efficiency. Since the EGR cooling is so effective, exhaust gasses can bypass the system and return to the exhaust pipes, allowing faster engine warm-up from start-up and reducing emissions still further.

EU5 emissions regulations have been achieved ahead of the 2011 legislative timetable using conventional diesel oxidation catalysts and diesel particulate filters (DPFs). NOx levels are reduced at source through the combustion system design, the addition of the new commonrail injection system and the new EGR system with by-pass. As a result, specialised NOx exhaust after-treatment is unnecessary, avoiding a potential cost and the need to use additional precious metals in the exhaust system.

Remarkably quiet for a diesel

The CGI cylinder block and new piezo injectors reduce combustion noise in the engine. Multiple, precise injections of fuel on the combustion stroke also reduce combustion noise and all engine covers including camshaft covers, front covers and the sump have been optimised to subdue radiated noise. Engine enclosures have been ribbed to minimise radiated noise and the sump pan is manufactured from sound deadening steel (SDS), comprising a polymer layer sandwiched between two layers of steel.

Internal friction, a major contributor to unnecessary fuel consumption, has been addressed by careful optimisation of the crankshaft, valves and pistons. All these features combine to make the new Jaguar AJ-V6D Gen III engines amongst the quietest premium diesels on the market.

A major step forward

With its parallel sequential turbocharger system, third-generation commonrail fuel injection system and fully optimised EGR system, the new 3.0-litre AJ-V6D Gen III diesel sets new class standards when it comes to power, response and refinement in the premium diesel segment.

"The new XF challenges the rules and redefines Jaguar sporting luxury. Our designers and engineers have worked together to develop elegant, inspired solutions to complex technical challenges. It's a simple but very effective philosophy and the result is great new products like the new 3.0-litre diesel XF."
Mike O'Driscoll, Managing Director, Jaguar Cars

<![CDATA[2009 Jaguar XF, Part Two]]> Exterior Design: **/****
It all depends on when you catch the 2009 Jaguar XF. Sometimes it’s stunning; sometimes it’s stunningly bland. Sometimes it resembles a four-door Aston Martin; sometimes it looks like either a Dodge Intrepid or a Chrysler LHS. One thing’s for certain, even though it’s occasionally good-looking, it isn’t the coupe in a sedan’s body that the C-XF concept was. Next time, we’d like to see more aggression and more visual drama.

Interior Design: ***
Once again, it depends on when and where you’re looking. At night, the cabin is warm and luxurious, accentuated by the starter button that pulses red, the cool blue mood lighting and the attractive dash. Under the light of day, most of the materials not only look cheap, but really, a Jaguar should never have a steering wheel worse than what you'll find in the Ford brand parts bin. The gimmicky rotary gear selector works well, but lacks damping, so it spins freely without changing gears in time. The switchgear is cheap plastic, which is especially a shame when it comes to the gear shift paddles. The seats also aren’t the quality you’d expect from a $55,000 luxury car. Then there’s the show that happens every time you start the car: the gear knob rises from the dash as the air vents swivel open. Cool the first time, and unless you're James May and/or easily amused, less and less cool every time after.

Acceleration: ***
The 4.2-liter, 300 HP V8 feels great to use, but isn’t ultimately that fast. 60 comes up in 6.1 seconds, but feels faster due to the stateliness evoked by the sound, weight transfer and smooth, linear feel. For $62,975 you can get 120 HP extra with the aid of a supercharger.

Braking: ****
No complaints here, the 12.83-inch discs on all four corners haul the XF up without issues and the ABS doesn’t intrude unnecessarily early. Solid pedal feel leads to great confidence in the system’s ability.

Ride: ****
Extremely compliant, especially given our tester’s 19-inch wheels. A standard fitment on the $55,975 Premium model seen here, those wheels look great, but we can’t help but feel the ride would benefit from the less-fashionable 18s. The XF feels big, heavy and smooth, without feeling underdamped. The XF’s biggest success.

Handling: ***
Treat the XF like a luxury car and you’ll be surprised by how well it handles. The variable ratio steering is vague on center, but full of feel once you turn into a corner, inspiring confidence. At a medium pace it feels incredibly capable, showing off the XF's use of the same suspension set-up as the XK coupe, but push harder and you'll find the suspension can't handle the added heft, as the mid-sized Jag begins to wallow. For drivers looking for a fast luxury car, this won’t be an issue, but those looking for a luxurious sports car will be disappointed.

Gearbox: ****
Leave the rotary gear selector in Sport mode and you’ll be rewarded with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission that holds gears just the right amount of time. Use the paddles and, for an automatic, you’ll get fast shifts and the ability to hold the gear of your choosing to the redline. Just don’t shift down into first gear manually, it's laggy and with a noticeable lurch that will upset passengers. Regular old Drive mode is less responsive and shifts up way too early, rendering itself purposeless for anything other than increasing fuel economy but seeing as you paid for the car, you really shouldn't puss out on the gas.

Audio: ****
The optional Bowers & Wilkins 13-speaker surround sound system sounds great, but the touch screen interface is unintuitive. The subwoofer is unnecessary and boomy if turned up past the standard setting. An iPod connection via USB and 6-CD in-dash changer round out an impressive package.

Toys: ***
We just don’t want a Jag to be this gimmicky. What its makers intend to be surprise and delight features — the rotary gear knob, the proximity sensor glove box button, the swiveling air vents, and the glows-like-a-heart-beat starter button — abound, but are poorly executed. The gear selector feels cheap and unrewarding to use, with too much slack. Oil damping would really help it. The proximity sensor glove box release only works when it wants to. The swiveling air vents are annoying. The lighting, however, is some of the best we’ve seen.

Value: ***
The $49,975 base price is in line with competitors like the BMW 535i and Audi A6 4.2. If you want a unique mid-size luxury car that’s not made in Germany, and not yet made in India, it’s a good choice, but probably not as solid of a long term option as a Lexus GS, which comes in about $5,000 cheaper.

Overall: ***
The XF ends up almost being an also-ran in one of the most hotly contested classes. It’s not the fastest, the best looking or the best value mid-size luxury sedan, but if you catch the XF on a good day, when it’s looking more Aston than Dodge, it’s a uniquely appealing proposition. It’s not as luxurious, nor as sporty as we’d want a Jaguar to be, hopefully new owner Tata is prepared to invest in some serious R&D for its replacement.

<![CDATA[2009 Jaguar XF, Part One]]> If the Jeremy Clarkson School of Automotive Journalism has taught me one thing, it’s that any good car review needs a metaphor. They serve to add a tangible anchor to a story, they add humor, they add relevance and, more importantly, they create an easy formula with which us car reviewers can crank out reviews in no time flat about a car most readers will likely never drive. So in keeping with the teachings of Professor Clarkson, we’re picking a metaphor for the 2009 Jaguar XF: Seinfeld’s pretty/ugly girl.

Since network television hasn’t been able to come up with a show that’s equally universal in its blandness or equally inoffensive in its humor since it went off-air in 1998, Seinfeld reruns can be seen at any given time on at least two channels — a kind of comedy bookend to the Law & Order probability theory. So I probably don’t need remind you who the pretty/ugly girl is, but just for posterity’s sake: she’s a girl Jerry dates that, depending on the angle of lighting, is either really pretty or really ugly.

And that’s exactly the case with this mid-size Jag. During my weekly escape to my Fortress of Solitude in the Pennsylvania mountains, I couldn’t have been happier with the XF. Driving there late on a Friday evening, the view over its bulged bonnet evoked a sense of immense power backed up by the 4.2-liter V8’s 310 lb-ft of torque. Inside, the glow of the classy instruments and warm dash evoked old-world luxury.

Both the power and the luxury were backed up on the outside too. People turned to look, but not in the bitter way that I’ve grown used to in flashier cars. From the rear, the XF looked like a four-door Aston Martin, from the front, like a modern take on the original 1968 XJ; the whole thing was classy and understated. I felt like visiting royalty.

All of this was carried over to the drive as well. Swooping along the freshly repaved mountain roads in manual mode, the XF felt like a Bentley: big, heavy, powerful and smooth. The steering, which was vague on the highway, firmed up on turn-in, resulting in surprising agility. Pushed, the V8 sounded like an Aston (it should: Jag and Aston use tweaked versions of the same engine), resulting in a rewarding drive that blended clubhouse luxury with performance in a way that only the English know how to do.

And then the lighting changed.

I don’t think Seinfeld had either the ability or vision to go this deep with its characters, but to me, the pretty/ugly girl represents more than just looks; it also represents the duality of both personality and attraction. Certain settings and certain people act like fun-house mirrors, altering your perception of someone’s appeal in a way that goes beyond looks. Take the sexy girl from last night’s party to breakfast, and all of a sudden her pouting lips and willing personality transform into a leathery face and abject stupidity.

Back in dirty, nasty Brooklyn, the XF’s lithe looks were just a memory, replaced with something Ray describes as “Dodge Intrepid.” Personally, I think it looks more like an Infinity I30, but all of a sudden, any hint of classic Aston or Jag is gone.

So too is the luxurious interior. In the light of day, the occasionally suspect materials, poor control damping and cheap leather seats grab your attention more than the gimmicky transmission and soft blue mood lighting do.

Out too is the imperious driving ability, replaced with something that feels distinctly Ford-like. Driving to Jalopnik’s top-secret test track through Brooklyn traffic, the well-weighted steering is suddenly ponderously slow instead. Once there, with the ability to push the car to its limits, the XF just feels ponderous, only reluctantly transitioning to oversteer, even with all the 300 horses feeding into the rear tires.

All of this just leaves us really confused about the XF. Is it the contemporary upper-class English muscle car it wants to be or the wallowy, cheap imitator it felt like right before we gave it back? Like the pretty/ugly girl, it’s probably both, depending on its environment; able to either flatter or offend. And like Jerry Seinfeld, that’s not what we’re looking for. We’re too picky to settle for occasional beauty; we want a driving experience we know will be there no matter what the lighting.

<![CDATA[2009 Jaguar XF-R Powerslides Up The Hill At Goodwood]]> With a suspected 5.0-liter supercharged V8 making around 500 HP, the 2009 Jaguar XF-R has no trouble smoking its tires. The black cat crossed the path of spectators at this weekend's Goodwood Festival Of Speed, where Jaguar head of vehicle development Mike Cross power-slid the car up the hill. Nothing better than a bit of hoonage to properly show off a car during its first official public appearance. Even if we're told by the folks at GTSpirit people barely seemed to even notice it at all. We think they'll notice it at the official unveil of the super-cat, which we're hearing will be at the British Motor Show later this month. UPDATE: Thanks to tipster Tom, who had a chance to speak to Mike Cross, we've got a few photos of the front showing the best and clearest shots yet of the catty beast after the jump. They totally need to offer that mask as a check box option, don't they?

<![CDATA[2009 Jaguar XF Caught In San Jose Wilderness]]> Reader James P. got quite a fright this weekend while stumbling back to his hotel room in San Jose after one too many virgin marys. A black 2009 Jaguar XF crossed his woozy path. but James was quick-witted enough to snap the pictures you see here. However, he was evidently too hammered frightened to correctly focus his camera. Still, clearly visible are the mid-sized cat's aggressive hood bulges and Infiniti-esque rear 3/4 view. James returned in the morning loaded for big game, but alas found nothing but tracks.

<![CDATA[Top Gear Tests Jaguar XF, Declares it Cat's Meow]]>
Captain Slow took a turn or two 'round some rolling UK hills in Jaguar's new cat scratch fever, the S-Type replacing 2009 Jaguar XF. Top Gear gives it two strokes thumbs up — as you'd expect from the British motoring show. But the best part has to be when James May claims the XF shows Jaguar's finally got a big brass set again beneath all the fur. We're not entirely sure, but one thing we know for certain — and maybe it's the skillful video production — but for the first time, we're actually liking the XF's Intrepid styling. You be the judge.

<![CDATA[LA Auto Show: 2009 Jaguar XF US Reveal]]> Yeah, so the Jaguar XF is here. On sale in March of '08, the 300 hp sedan will set you back $49,975 and the supercharged, 400 hp version cost you an additional $13,000. However, it will muscle its way to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. We like that. Sadly, despite designer Ian Callum's best efforts the looks still leave us cold. Well, not exactly cold, but viewed from the side, everything behind the B-pillar looks like an Infiniti G and the short front fenders scream FWD. The headlamps are sharp and the taillights scream Aston Martin, which we think we like. Yeah, so... anyone see that French Tatra?

<![CDATA[Frankfurt Auto Show: 2009 Jaguar XF]]> Here you go kids, it's your brand-saving entry from Shag-you-are, the XF. Yeah, it's not as hot as the XF Concept, even though Mr. Cullum promised it would be. Still, this cat's got some good curves on her, even going so far as aping Aston's DB9 from behind. Dare we say that perhaps we were a bit too hasty in our initial verdict? Or does everything look simply snazzy under 17 coats of wax, professional lighting and 50 gallons of none-more-black paint? And have we shown you the interior? No, really, have a look at the gorgeous orange seats. You'll plotz. We did.

THE NEW JAGUAR XF

Challenging convention and setting its own rules, the new Jaguar XF fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon. This is the beginning of a new era for Jaguar.

The new XF: a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language, with a driving experience that exceeds expectations created by the striking appearance: relaxed and confident, with outstanding ability and control.

Resolutely true to the Jaguar philosophy of creating Beautiful, Fast cars, the XF goes further, adding a new dimension to the marque. The four-door XF has the visual excitement of a coupe, but room inside for five adults to enjoy an interior wholly contemporary in style yet uniquely Jaguar.

As well as space, the new XF's interior ambiance is enriched by crafted, luxurious materials, sophisticated instruments and calm interior mood lighting. Engineering excellence and attention to detail mean the XF's interior matches the best-in-class for refinement, while Jaguar's intelligent use of technology and driver-friendly Touch-screen controls add new layers of comfort and ease of use.

Every XF model has shift-by-wire transmission control, with Jaguar's class-leading sequential shift system - its popularity already confirmed by feedback from XK sports car customers - used for the first time in a saloon. Shift-by-wire replaces manual shift linkages with electronic commands and gives every XF rapid and very smooth gearshifts - faster, even, than the acclaimed XK's transmission.

The Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM System gives the driver the option of one-touch manual gearchange control via steering-wheel mounted paddles. There are also multiple JaguarDrive ControlTM transmission modes, including Dynamic and Winter settings, which interact with throttle progression, Dynamic Stability Control thresholds and shift strategy to match mood and conditions.

But the most exciting feature of the XF's transmission control is the all-new JaguarDrive SelectorTM - an industry-first rotary shift interface that combines precise, intuitive control with space-saving packaging, to allow maximisation of interior storage options.

Other innovative functional features add more 'surprise and delight'. Air-conditioning vents present a flush dashboard surface until the ignition is switched on, at which point they elegantly rotate to the open position. Another new technology - JaguarSenseTM - introduces touch or proximity-sensing control for overhead console lights and the glovebox release.

Every level of audio system features at least eight speakers, with a premium system designed in association with highly respected audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins available on range-topping models. Radio options now include a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system and Sirius Satellite Radio for the North American market, while the XF technology count includes Bluetooth® communications technology, plus optional iPod® and MP3 player connectivity with full-function control through the Touch-screen - and an auxiliary port on every car for other portable audio devices.

Other available features include JaguarVoiceTM control to operate navigation and telephone functions, Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids and Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Electronic Parking Brake.

Mick Mohan, XF Chief Programme Engineer comments:

"The interior of the XF is a combination of style and substance. It bristles with innovative, industry-leading features. From the smart technical solution of the JaguarDrive SelectorTM, through the seamless efficiency of rotating vents, to the simplicity of Touch-screen control, the XF proves aesthetics and function can work together in perfect harmony."

Engineering excellence and class-leading structural rigidity are at the heart of the new XF's construction. The advanced body structure, which comprises high-tech materials and new-generation design techniques, maximises strength and minimises weight to give the XF superb performance, refinement and efficiency across its range of V6 and V8 engines. These engines include the quietest diesel engine in its class and a supercharged V8 that delivers outstanding levels of performance.

The new XF is best in class for torsional stiffness, and with a wide rear track displays excellent handling characteristics. These elements underpin a dynamic ethos that is driver-focussed yet supremely comfortable and refined. Just as its looks promise, the new XF excels across the board, in every role from a sports car to a luxurious long-distance cruiser.

<![CDATA[Jaguar XF R Test Mule]]> With the new Jaguar XF sedan in the can, it's time to turn our attention to the R version. That's the one that had better get close to the Germans' AMG and M hardware, or else lose face. Now, spy photographers have caught this duplicitous test mule that sports the front of an XF on the body of an S-Type. But it's not just any S-Type — the quad exhaust, fat meats and cross-drilled disks give away its sporting underpinnings. We're assuming the latest supercharged incarnation of the Jag 4.2-liter V8 is cloaked under that Frankensteinian bonnet. We'll see the product n 2008. [World Car Fans]

<![CDATA[2009 Jaguar XF - Now With Video!]]>
Well, we've now got the first running video of the just revealed 2009 Jaguar XF and yes, it certainly looks better on the road than it did when we first saw the press shots. However, it's still a few steps removed from the hotness that was the concept C-XF revealed at the this year's Detroit Auto Show. And by a few steps, we probably mean flights of stairs. But we digress, at least now we know a little bit more about the sedan that Jaguar hopes will give the pretty kitty brand the title of "the sports sedan brand of the world." Because you know, "it's theirs for the taking." We didn't realize how much the speedometer and tachometer look like the eyes of a cat on that dark black instrument panel. Scary! Guess we'll be waiting to check out the dash ourselves in two weeks at the Frankfurt Auto Show when it's officially unveiled. [Motor Authority]

Full press release after the jump.

NEW JAGUAR XF PRICES ANNOUNCED - RESIDUAL VALUES BEST-IN-CLASS *

28th August: The new Jaguar XF, announced today, will cost from £33,900 in the UK. Buyers of Jaguar's new mid-size premium saloon will also enjoy class-leading residual values* in addition to owning a very well-equipped vehicle with a driving experience that matches the excitement of Jaguar's bold new design language.

Available to order now, the XF makes its public debut on September 11 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. UK dealers will have demonstrators in showrooms early next year and the first UK customers will receive their new XF in time for the March 1 registration.

The £33,900 OTR price secures the 2.7-litre V6 diesel or the 3.0-litre V6 petrol. A choice of 4.2-litre V8 models - one of them with a supercharged engine - is also available, with prices from £44,500. All XFs feature a sophisticated six-speed automatic transmission that includes a unique, all-new JaguarDrive Selector - an industry first rotary shift interface - and the Jaguar Sequential Shift™ System with steering-wheel mounted paddles for one-touch manual control.

The full XF model range in the UK is as follows:

Luxury 3.0-litre V6 petrol £33,900

Premium Luxury 2.7-litre V6 diesel £37,500

Premium Luxury 3.0-litre V6 petrol £37,500

Premium Luxury 4.2-litre V8 petrol (naturally aspirated - n/a) £45,500

SV8 4.2-litre V8 petrol supercharged (s/c) £54,900

UK Managing Director Geoff Cousins said: "We are very excited the new XF is now in the public domain and we are confident it will be a great success for our dealers in the UK. The new Jaguar XF combines the emotional appeal of a contemporary, modern Jaguar with all the rational appeal of a spacious five-seater sports saloon with high levels of standard equipment, innovative functional features and competitive pricing. The other excellent news for customers is of course the residual values that experts are quoting for XF."

Industry-leading residual value experts CAP and EurotaxGlass's have both put the XF under the microscope and both will be quoting residual value after 36 months / 36,000 miles of 50% of original value* for the 2.7-litre diesel Luxury model. These figures from both experts mean the XF 2.7-litre diesel Luxury is best-in-class against rivals BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Audi. CAP has concluded that the nearest rival, the BMW 525d SE will retain 45.3% of its original value over the same period.

Martin Ward, Manufacturer Relationship Manager for CAP Motor Research said: "The new Jaguar XF has not only caught up with its nearest competitors, but has now overtaken them. Jaguar has proved that a well built, well specified and well priced car that has fantastic styling can break the mould, and should be a success the world over."

EurotaxGlass's figure of 50% for the XF 2.7-litre diesel Luxury is best-in-class ahead of the BMW 525d at 48% and the Audi A6 3.0 V6 TDI Quattro SE at a rating of 49%. The XF 3.0-litre V6 petrol is expected to retain 45% of its original value making it best-in-class over the BMW 530i, the Audi A6 3.2 FSI and the Mercedes-Benz E350.

Kevin Gaskell, CEO of EurotaxGlass's has a similar opinion. He said: "The whole XF package is class-leading. With an array of impressive standard equipment, competitive pricing and outstanding styling, we have concluded that it will be a desirable car with best-in-class residual values of 50%."

Jason King, UK Head of Market Intelligence for EurotaxGlass's continued: "The second of Jaguar's new generation of products, the XF is bound to turn as many heads as the XK has since its arrival. The bold, elegant design is sure to appeal to a much wider audience. Current drivers of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz will have to consider the Jaguar when it is time to change - many of whom will never have experienced the brand before. Our strong residual value positioning of the XF reflects this, and underlines the resurgence of Jaguar."

With a top speed of 143 mph, the XF 2.7-litre diesel can reach 0-60 in 7.7 seconds and has a combined CO2 of 199 g/km, meaning it falls within UK Tax Band 'F'. At this level it would not be subject to the proposed high level London congestion charges.

The new Jaguar XF, which fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon, has a generous array of equipment across the range. There are three levels of specification:

Luxury

The 'Luxury' specification is the starting point for XF ownership and is available to order with the 2.7-litre diesel or the 3.0-litre petrol engines. Highlights include 8x8 way adjustable leather trimmed seats, 7" colour Touch-screen display, Navigation system, Bluetooth® Telephone Connectivity, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, Rear parking aid, interior mood lighting, heated exterior mirrors with electric adjustment, 17" alloy wheels, Automatic Climate Control and Cruise Control with Automatic Speed Limiter.

Premium Luxury

If customers choose to move up a level they can choose the 'Premium Luxury' specification for an increment of £3,600 with both the 2.7-litre diesel and the 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines. The 4.2-litre V8 petrol (n/a) also comes with 'Premium Luxury' specification offering, in addition to the Luxury model's standard features, highlights such as 10x10 way heated Softgrain leather seats with lumbar adjust, 18" alloy wheels, Jaguar 320W premium sound system with 8 speakers and sub-woofer, driver's seat memory function, heated windscreen and Softgrain leather stitched and tailored instrument panel and door top rolls.

SV8

The SV8 specification is available on the 4.2-litre supercharged model only and customers can enjoy additional features such as active heated and cooled front seats, 20" alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlamps with automatic levelling and headlamp washers and CATS (Computer Active Technology Suspension).

Although publicly announced only today, interest in the XF is already high following the unveiling of the C-XF concept car at the beginning of the year. As signalled by the C-XF, the production XF model is a dramatic expression of Jaguar's bold new design language. The four-door car has the visual excitement of a coupe, but room inside for five adults to enjoy an interior wholly contemporary in style yet uniquely Jaguar.
Customers can find out more about the new XF by going to www.jaguarxf.co.uk which will be live from September 11 2007. Details of Jaguar dealers can be found at www.jaguar.co.uk

*XF 2.7-litre diesel Luxury residual value of 50.7% (36 months / 36,000 miles) given by CAP is best-in-class versus figures of 45.3% for the BMW 525d SE auto, 44.4% for the Audi A6 3.0TDI Quattro SE and 41.6% for the Mercedes-Benz E280 CDI Classic auto. The 50% figure from EurotaxGlass's for the 2.7-litre diesel Luxury XF after 36 months / 36,000 miles is best-in-class over the BMW 525d 2.5-litre at 48% and the Audi A6 3.0 TDI at 49% and the Mercedes-Benz E280 CDI Elegance which has a residual value of 44%.

<![CDATA[2009 Jaguar XF: Why We Broke The Embargo]]> So here's the 2009 Jaguar XF. It represents a new design direction for Ford's up-for-sale luxe brand. Since it was shown as the CX-F concept in Detroit earlier this year, the concept crystallized into the Dodge Intrepid-like four-door XF you see here. All that need be said about it — at least at this juncture — is in the press release (see it after the jump). Perhaps more important is the tortured process that lead to our publication of the picture you see above. Its a sordid tale familiar to those operating inside Eight Mile. Yet again an automaker decided to provide limited embargo access to "trusted" media outlets that have proven less than worthy of that title. It started with a teasing side-shot from Road & Track, then a set of low-resolution shots that arrived on the internet late last week — shots that worked their way through the forums until finally reaching more heavily trafficked international sites and then next to the Road that is ever-Winding and some of the other smaller automotive blogs. Normally we'd have jumped into the breach of the embargo dike along with our fellow internet breathren, handing you the dregs and drippings from another automaker.

But we, and Autoblog decided individually we'd hold off on running the leaked shots. Instead, we'd...

...attempt to color within the lines, using the event as a case study. We'd work with Jaguar, following their instructions to the letter, and in return we'd get high-resolution shots. We understood our readers would be the ones penalized by our decision to hold off, but felt the eventual quality of the materials provided would make up for the initial lack. Then, we stood back and watched the process unfold, taking notes on how a company with the resources of Ford would handle the Internet auto press. Remember, this is nearly a year after the C-XF's launch was marred by embargo breaches ahead of the Detroit Auto Show. The XF's design dummy showed up weeks early on the pages of Car und Driver, while online publishers were denied the same access.

Same story, different car. Judging from Road and Track disembargoed tease of an XF shot, and the subsequent spillage of the majority of shots onto the rest of the web it's clear Jaguar's continuing the same illusory embargo process. Both we and Autoblog have offered to help automakers revamp their product launch process for the digital-distribution age, yet we've received exactly zero response from Jaguar or any brand from the big blue oval. Therefore, while the Jaguar XF embargo doesn't end officially until midnight tonight, we and Autoblog have decided we're running all the embargoed shots and their press release together at the same time today — a few hours earlier than the embargo time — at a time of our choosing. We're handling it this way because the process continues to be stupid and onerous and represents a lack of respect for the millions of auto enthusiasts who get their automotive information online. Because we respect our readers, we figure you'll know the best way to handle things with Jaguar and Ford. We've always said, we won't be the first to break an embargo, but we won't be the third. Lucky for us this embargo's been broken for days now and that's where we're going to stand. Oh, yeah, the release is below. [via and in coordination with Autoblog]

THE NEW JAGUAR XF

INTRODUCTION

Challenging convention and setting its own rules, the new Jaguar XF fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon. This is the beginning of a new era for Jaguar.

The new XF: a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language, with a driving experience that exceeds expectations created by the striking appearance: relaxed and confident, with outstanding ability and control.

Other available features include JaguarVoiceTM control to operate audio and telephone functions, Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids and Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Electronic Parking Brake.

AT A GLANCE

- The XF is a four-door Jaguar that fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon.

- The exterior styling of the XF is the first expression of Jaguar's new design language in a saloon car. With interior design that is the equal of the exterior in terms of crafted execution and visual excitement, the XF offers a truly contemporary, luxury environment.

- The coupe-like lines of the XF belie the amount of space inside: there is room for five adults in comfort, generous interior stowage and a boot capacity of up to 540 litres* (plus the opportunity to fold the rear seats and add a further 420 litres).

- Jaguar craftsmanship adopts a sharp new edge on the XF. Sophisticated instrumentation, a Touch-screen, modern materials and graphics complement new 'surprise and delight' features. On entry to the XF, the start button pulses red, like a heartbeat. Start the engine and the JaguarDrive SelectorTM rises into the palm of the hand, while rotating vents turn from their flush, 'parked' position to their functional open position.

- The best torsional stiffness in class delivers both refinement and dynamic performance - underpinning the driver-focussed yet remarkably comfortable driving experience.

- The XF will be available from launch with a range of four engines,** all featuring Jaguar's proven six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted 'paddles' for manual gear selection (Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM):
- 2.7-litre V6 twin-turbocharged diesel: 0-60mph in just 7.7 secs (0-100kph in 8.2 secs) and a top speed of 143 mph;
- 3.0-litre V6 petrol: 0-60mph in 7.9 secs (0-100kph in 8.3 secs) and a top speed of 148mph;
- 4.2 n/a V8 petrol: 0-60mph in 6.2 secs (0-100kph in 6.5 secs) and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph;
- 4.2 s/c V8 petrol: 0-60mph in 5.1 secs (0-100kph in 5.4 secs) and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph.

- Key driving aids on the XF include Electronic Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Anti-lock Braking System, Dynamic Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control, and Engine Drag Torque Control. And, for the first time in a Jaguar, Understeer Control Logic which decelerates the car and helps to restore grip to the front wheels when required.

- The new XF has a wide portfolio of driver assistance features including a Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids, Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. Bluetooth® compatibility, iPod®/MP3 player interfaces, JaguarVoiceTM, Digital radio and a single or six-disc CD player ensure owners can listen and talk as they choose.

- XF offers three levels of audio system, all controlled through the Touch-screen. The top-of-the-range Bowers & Wilkins 440w Premium Sound System option offers extraordinary clarity and faithful sound reproduction. Designed and tuned for the XF by Bowers & Wilkins, the surround-sound system delivers a powerful and vivid performance.

- In a first for a Jaguar saloon, the XF has the marque's new Pedestrian Contact Sensing System. This can mitigate pedestrian injury by firing actuators that deploy the bonnet, resulting in a cushioned space between the bonnet and engine hardpoints.

- Three trim levels will be offered, depending on market. The Luxury level will be available with either petrol or diesel V6 engines (and naturally aspirated V8 models in the US), Premium Luxury (with petrol or diesel V6, or naturally aspirated V8), and SV8 (with the supercharged V8 petrol).

- The XF is available to order now, depending on market. The first cars will be delivered to customers in March 2008. Pricing is available from individual markets depending on the start of customer orders.

All performance figures are manufacturer's estimates.
* With Jaguar Tyre Repair System fitted. Volume with spare wheel is 500 litres.
** Dependent on market choice.

<![CDATA[Jaguar XF Teaser Shot Spotted On Interwebs]]> Say hello to the purported headlight of the new Jaguar XF — at least according to Gyro1, a forum member over at CarSpyShots. He (or she) claims it was a camera phone shot taken from a dealership brochure. We've no idea if Gyro1's full of it, or full of pride that he snagged this first shot of — umm — the headlight of the XF before the whole thing's revealed to us in Frankfurt early next month. Frankly, we're more excited about the rear end shots snagged by WorldCarFans earlier this month. Although it's probably more exciting than tape — even if the tape's going for a good cause. <![CDATA[Jaguar XF Getting Ready For Frankfurt]]> These new shots of the Jaguar XF seem to indicate it's getting awfully close to being ready for the Frankfurt Auto Show reveal. We'll let the WorldCarFans folks give you the rest of the story:

"Code-named X 250, the new XF aims in particular at buyers of the very successful BMW 5-Series. The current S-Type has been on the market since 1998, and although it had found many faithful buyers, the nostalgic styling turned out not to be for everyone. The new XF abandons traditional styling to pursue a more youthful modern design as seen in the C-XF Concept.

The XF engines range from 6 and 8 cylinder engines including the new 3.2 liter petrol 6-cylinder, first used in the Volvo S80. Also the 4.2 liter V8 of the current model is expected to be upgraded to 5.0 liter. Transmission is a six speed automatic controlled through an all-new gear selector interface called JaguarDrive."

<![CDATA[Car Spy Photographer Brenda Priddy Auctions Off Jaguar XF Prototype Duct Tape For Charity]]> A-list car spy photographer (and sometimes Jalopnik contributor) Brenda Priddy's always one to use her unique "star-like" status in the industry to make some dough for those less fortunate. Just as an example, last year she put herself in "jail" to look for some straight-to-charity bail money. This year however, she's snagged some littered duct tape and a sticky wad of camouflage from the not-yet-out 2009 Jaguar XF and she's auctioning it off along with a 12" x 18" shot of the Jaguar XF signed by none other than the spy mistress herself. So hop on over to eBay and snag yourself some super-secret sticky stuff and a pic of the Jaguar XF — it's for a good cause. [eBay]
