Sean caught the XC60 right next to the Beverly Hills Hotel, and if the brand hopes to reach that US sales goal of 25,000, they're going to really have to do better than blacked-out and tape look. Seriously, with Acura all zebra stripes and the Lotus Eagle's awesome bat look, they're really going to need to step up and out of this fashion faux pas. Unfortunately, what the XC60 lacks in camo-clothing style, it also lacks in under-the-hood options.

According to Volvo, the XC60 will be offered in the US market with the turbocharged T6 V6 with no possibility of the turbodiesels that Europe is getting. One interesting feature is the "CitySafe" technology that stops the car before it hits another car at low speed, which should be an interesting way to stop low speed road rage. (Hat tip to Sean)

<![CDATA[ Volvo XC60 Unveiled At New York, Looks The Same As At Geneva ]]> Remember the Volvo XC60 we showed you at the Geneva Motor Show? This new Sport Utility Crossover (SUX) is here in the states, but with some major differences. First, it'll be sold in North American. Second, no diesels. The end. The global version has two turbodiesels (the D5 producing 185 HP and the 2.4D with 163 HP), but we'll merely be getting the 285 HP turbocharged T6 V6. This is a big model for Volvo, with the company planning to sell as much as half of the 50,000 initially built in the United States. Differing it from other vehicles in the segment, AWD will be standard on all models and the new XC60 has an auto breaking features. Full press release below the jump.

Safe, stunning and smart - the new Volvo XC60 has what the crossover customer dreams about

The new Volvo XC60 is stepping boldly into what is currently the automotive world's fastest-growing segment - dressed in a thrilling blend of muscular XC capability and the sporty charisma of a coupe.
"This is not only the safest Volvo ever. If you ask me, it's also the most stunning.
Not a bad combination, is it?" says Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp.
The new XC60 has its premiere showing at the international car show in Geneva
in March, with the first cars reaching dealers in Europe in autumn 2008.

The "Small Premium Utility" segment is growing quickly. Within the next few years, buyers will have at least ten crossover models to choose between. By 2009, this segment is expected to expand by 75 percent to 443,000 cars.
"In order to succeed in that kind of competition, you have to stick your chin out and create a car that stands out from the crowd. The new XC60 bases its unique appeal on the synthesis between daringly sporty design and a range of intelligent safety systems that help the driver avoid accidents," explains Fredrik Arp.
The big safety news is City Safety - a unique feature that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic and traffic tailbacks. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself.
"We are first manufacturer in the world to offer this type of feature as standard. City Safety clearly advertises that the new XC60 is the safest car Volvo has ever produced. The car is packed with our accumulated safety know-how and technology, both when it comes to preventing accidents and protecting all the occupants in a collision," says Fredrik Arp.

Six-cylinder turbo - and two turbo diesels
The new XC60 will initially be available with the six-cylinder turbocharged T6 engine producing 285 horsepower and two five-cylinder turbodiesels: the D5 producing 185 and the 2.4D with 163 horsepower. All Wheel Drive (AWD) with Instant Traction is fitted as standard on all variants.
"Owing to its compact dimensions - the XC60 is 20 cm shorter than the XC70 and lower than the XC90 - it continues our range of slimmed-down car models with high energy efficiency. During 2009, we will offer a front-wheel driven 2.4-litre version powered by a Euro 5 diesel engine producing 163 horsepower and with a CO2 target around 170 g/km," reveals Fredrik Arp.
The chassis setting is aggressively sporty without losing anything in terms of comfort. Sitting behind the wheel of the new XC60 is in other words more of a driving experience, while the larger Volvo XC90 focuses more on providing a ride experience.

Target group with high demands on technology
The XC60 project has its sights set on a target group that imposes high demands on design, brand integrity and high-tech content in its choice of lifestyle products.
Tongue in cheek, one might say that it's all about consumers who've grown up with the microchip as a natural supplement to their breakfast cereal. They're used to the immensely fast pace of development in the world of electronics - and every succeeding birthday has brought with it increased capacity in ever-shrinking gift packages.
When it comes to the choice of car, these consumers adopt the same view as they do for other lifecycle products, that is to say all the properties should preferably be integrated into one single attractive and intelligent package.
"One might say that this could be the C30 owner's next car. It's as sporty and exciting, but way more capable. An all-round car for the person who lives single in the city and for the young family taking the kids for a weekend of fun and adventure," relates Fredrik Arp. He adds:
"We're aiming primarily at lifestyle rather than age. With the XC60 we are broadening our model range to attract even more customers with an active urban lifestyle. Like the Volvo C30, the XC60 plays an important role in our planned volume expansion strategy."

Equal allocation to Europe and North America
The sales target for the new XC60 is over 50,000 cars per year. Distribution between Europe and North America is unusually uniform: about 40 percent each. The remaining 20 percent is destined for the rest of the world.
The five largest markets during peak year 2010 will be the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Russia and China.
"This car has a natural appeal in North America. Here in Europe it is the sporty personality in combination with the compact format that attracts new buyers, primarily women. The XC60 offers a feeling of space even though it is about 20 centimetres shorter than the XC70," explains Fredrik Arp, and adds:
"The fact that both China and Russia are among the five largest XC60 markets is proof that these growing markets are now beginning to be really large. Both markets will now advance even higher up the sales league in the future."
The Volvo XC60 will be built at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent, Belgium. Sales will start in Europe during the second half of 2008, while sales in North America will get under way in early 2009.

<![CDATA[ Volvo XC60 in the Swissosphere ]]> What would the world be like if carmakers weren't apt to appear in every single segment, and their brands weren't defined solely on how soft the interior is or how much spongier than an apple cart the ride is? Why, we wouldn't have a small SUV from Volvo to go on about. It's the Volvo XC60, which debuted today in Geneva to adoring crowds of sweater-wearing men in casual shoes. The XC60 is built for "consumers who've grown up with the microchip as a natural supplement to their breakfast cereal." That may be a translation issue, but we've heard of those kids, and pica syndrome is nothing to joke about (you'll get it later). Nonetheless, the XC60 will be powered by Volvo's 285-horsepower T6, and in Europe, a choice of two five-cylinder turbodiesels. Expect nearly half of the expected 50,000 XC60 to be built to show up in the US. Watch for them lined up outside a Montessori school near you.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Volvo XC60 Officially Unveiled: Most "Sensual" Volvo Ever ]]> Although we gave you the XC60 tease this weekend, Volvo's now dropped the full bomb of photos, video and details on the new 2009 Volvo XC60 — a car Volvo describes as being not only "one of this year's most anticipated new car launches" and "one of the safest Volvo ever" but also the "most sensual" Volvo ever. We'll have to leave whether Volvo's right on on that one to you, our dear readers. But for the moment, we think it may be a bit of overselling. Especially since everyone knows that standard bearer is obviously the Volvo 240chero. But one thing's for sure, this new Car-UV is an important one for Volvo as they see it being the next step up for a buyer of a Volvo C30. The goal for an automaker is to always "keep 'em in the family" — so Ford's brand all about safety's hoping to make it a hit for 20,000 or so buyers of the C30 starting in 2009. Full release below the jump and we'll be adding video above shortly. Update: Video added above.

Volvo reveals first photos of the new XC60

- the safest and most sensual Volvo ever

February 20, 2008 (Irvine, CA) - Volvo has released the first photos of one of this year's most anticipated new car launches - the all-new 2009 Volvo XC60. "This is not only the safest Volvo ever - it's also the most stunning," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp. The new XC60 makes its world premier at the Geneva Motor Show on March 4. The first cars will reach dealers in Europe in fall 2008 with the U.S. launch following shortly thereafter; the first quarter of 2009.

Volvos' new XC60 crossover steps boldly into what is the motoring world's toughest and fastest-growing segment - the "Small Premium Utility." It blends a dynamic mix of two styles. Down below, the unmistakeable, immensely capable XC pumps its muscles. Up top, the daring lines create the elegant, sporty charisma of a coupe.

"This car is charged with more emotive form and more energy than any other Volvo," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin. "We're elevating our design DNA to an entirely new level by literally turning up the visual volume. If you say that you'd recognise a Volvo from 300 feet away today, I dare say the XC60 radiates a clear Volvo presence from at least twice that distance."

A variety of intelligent safety systems are another important part of the XC60's special character. The big news is City Safety - a unique system that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic. If the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car automatically applies the brakes.

"Volvo is the first in the world to offer this type of feature as standard," says Arp. "City Safety clearly signals that the new XC60 is the safest car Volvo has ever produced. The car is packed with our accumulated safety know-how and technology, both when it comes to preventing accidents and protecting all the occupants in a collision."

The XC60 targets a group of customers who impose high demands on design, brand integrity and high-tech content in its choice of lifestyle products. "One might say that this could be the C30 owner's next car," says Arp. "It's as sporty and exciting, but more capable. With the XC60, we're widening our model range to attract even more customers with an active urban lifestyle."

The new XC60 will be launched in the US with a single engine: the powerful turbocharged T6, which produces 281 horsepower. All Wheel Drive (AWD) with Instant Traction is fitted as standard.

Europe and North America sales targets

The global sales target for the new XC60 is 50,000 units per year. The five largest markets during the peak year 2010 are expected to be the USA (15,000 - 20,000 units annually), Germany, Great Britain, Russia and China.

The Volvo XC60 will be built at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent, Belgium. Sales will start in Europe during the fall of 2008, while sales in North America are targeted to begin in early 2009.

<![CDATA[ Bork! Bork! Bork! 2009 Volvo XC60 Leaks Onto Internet ]]> The odd-looking car guru who hails from Hollywood has procured what look to be leaked press photos of Volvo's new XC60 crossover vehicle. Unfortunately, it looks like Volvo overcooked their meatballs a bit. This mini-XC90 isn't exactly "yum, yum...good, good!" The funky, sculpted sheet metal on the front fascia, doors and rear end have been toned down a little more than we'd like. Also gone are the trick door handles and bumper-integrated exhaust. Predictably, the headlights and taillights from the concept have also been swapped out for more conventional units.

This all new cute-ute from Gothenburg will look to steal sales away from the BMW X3, Acura RDX and the Mercedes GLK. Most sources seem to have the XC60 sharing underpinnings with Land Rover's LR2. That would mean a 3.2L I6 kicking out 230 horsepower and 234 ft lbs.

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that massive new grille with the larger-than-ever Volvo badge. A design feature that will surely have Austin Powers scrambling to place an order. We hear official press photos, and possibly first drive reviews, will be released on Wednesday, February 20. Look for the debut of the XC60 Tuesday, March 4 at the Geneva Motor Show. <![CDATA[ Volvo To Cancel Second Gen XC90, No XOXO XC? ]]> The Swedes (who are now more dangerous than ze Germans) over at Auto Motor Sport Sweden have it on some authority that Volvo's XC90 is going to get the axe, despite a planned facelift in 2009. They claim the decision is due to the increased cost needed to keep weight down, absence of new engines/transmissions and the lack of hybrid technology.

The XC90 should run its course by 2012 as it gets usurped by the XC60, a possible XC50 and maybe even an XC30. Of course, this all could get switched around if Ford finds an appropriate platform to build a newer XC90 on. [Auto Motor Sport Sweden via World Car Fans]

<![CDATA[ Volvo XC60 Concept Hits Ze Intervebs Ahead of Detroit Show Unveiling ]]>

Pics of Volvo's conceptual small crossover, the XC60 were sucked into the black hole of the Web this morning, as the company prepares to show off the prototype at the Detroit show next month. Based on the same platform as the Land Rover LR2, the baby XC90 is expected to debut in production trim for the 2009 model year. As the concept points out, Volvo's stylings are approaching parity with Ford Europe's compelling "kinetic" design language, whose identifying quiver of channels, swage lines and stretch marks give the stationary sheetmetal the appearance of momentum. No word yet on powerplant or other vitals, though we're sure a cascade of such is forthcoming.

<![CDATA[ Smallish Swede: More on Volvo's Upcoming Entry Ute ]]>

World Car Fans' friends at Automedia say they've got a scoop on Volvo's reportedly upcoming small SUV — reportedly directly from a guy who works at the formerly Boxy-but-Good (name that reference) carmaker. Word is, a concept version called the XC60 (formerly thought to be the XC50) — which may resemble the spec image, above — will be unveiled at the Detroit show early next year. The production model won't hit dealers' lots until the second quarter of 2008, likely as a 2009 model. Basically, the Belgium-built ute will share Haldex AWD mechanicals with the Land Rover Freelander and a new platform with its V70 sibling.
