Volvo XC60 Unveiled At New York, Looks The Same As At Geneva

Remember the Volvo XC60 we showed you at the Geneva Motor Show? This new Sport Utility Crossover (SUX) is here in the states, but with some major differences. First, it'll be sold in North American. Second, no diesels. The end. The global version has two turbodiesels (the D5 producing 185 HP and the 2.4D with 163 HP), but we'll merely be getting the 285 HP turbocharged T6 V6. This is a big model for Volvo, with the company planning to sell as much as half of the 50,000 initially built in the United States. Differing it from other vehicles in the segment, AWD will be standard on all models and the new XC60 has an auto breaking features. Full press release below the jump.

Volvo XC60 in the Swissosphere

What would the world be like if carmakers weren't apt to appear in every single segment, and their brands weren't defined solely on how soft the interior is or how much spongier than an apple cart the ride is? Why, we wouldn't have a small SUV from Volvo to go on about. It's the Volvo XC60, which debuted today in Geneva to adoring crowds of sweater-wearing men in casual shoes. The XC60 is built for "consumers who've grown up with the microchip as a natural supplement to their breakfast cereal." That may be a translation issue, but we've heard of those kids, and pica syndrome is nothing to joke about (you'll get it later). Nonetheless, the XC60 will be powered by Volvo's 285-horsepower T6, and in Europe, a choice of two five-cylinder turbodiesels. Expect nearly half of the expected 50,000 XC60 to be built to show up in the US. Watch for them lined up outside a Montessori school near you.

2009 Volvo XC60 Officially Unveiled: Most "Sensual" Volvo Ever

Although we gave you the XC60 tease this weekend, Volvo's now dropped the full bomb of photos, video and details on the new 2009 Volvo XC60 — a car Volvo describes as being not only "one of this year's most anticipated new car launches" and "one of the safest Volvo ever" but also the "most sensual" Volvo ever. We'll have to leave whether Volvo's right on on that one to you, our dear readers. But for the moment, we think it may be a bit of overselling. Especially since everyone knows that standard bearer is obviously the Volvo 240chero. But one thing's for sure, this new Car-UV is an important one for Volvo as they see it being the next step up for a buyer of a Volvo C30. The goal for an automaker is to always "keep 'em in the family" — so Ford's brand all about safety's hoping to make it a hit for 20,000 or so buyers of the C30 starting in 2009. Full release below the jump and we'll be adding video above shortly. Update: Video added above.

Bork! Bork! Bork! 2009 Volvo XC60 Leaks Onto Internet

The odd-looking car guru who hails from Hollywood has procured what look to be leaked press photos of Volvo's new XC60 crossover vehicle. Unfortunately, it looks like Volvo overcooked their meatballs a bit. This mini-XC90 isn't exactly "yum, yum...good, good!" The funky, sculpted sheet metal on the front fascia, doors and rear end have been toned down a little more than we'd like. Also gone are the trick door handles and bumper-integrated exhaust. Predictably, the headlights and taillights from the concept have also been swapped out for more conventional units.

Volvo To Cancel Second Gen XC90, No XOXO XC?

The Swedes (who are now more dangerous than ze Germans) over at Auto Motor Sport Sweden have it on some authority that Volvo's XC90 is going to get the axe, despite a planned facelift in 2009. They claim the decision is due to the increased cost needed to keep weight down, absence of new engines/transmissions and the lack of hybrid technology. More »

Volvo XC60 Concept Hits Ze Intervebs Ahead of Detroit Show Unveiling

Pics of Volvo's conceptual small crossover, the XC60 were sucked into the black hole of the Web this morning, as the company prepares to show off the prototype at the Detroit show next month. Based on the same platform as the Land Rover LR2, the baby XC90 is expected to debut in production trim for the 2009 model year. As the concept points out, Volvo's stylings are approaching parity with Ford Europe's compelling "kinetic" design language, whose identifying quiver of channels, swage lines and stretch marks give the stationary sheetmetal the appearance of momentum. No word yet on powerplant or other vitals, though we're sure a cascade of such is forthcoming. More »

Smallish Swede: More on Volvo's Upcoming Entry Ute

World Car Fans' friends at Automedia say they've got a scoop on Volvo's reportedly upcoming small SUV — reportedly directly from a guy who works at the formerly Boxy-but-Good (name that reference) carmaker. Word is, a concept version called the XC60 (formerly thought to be the XC50) — which may resemble the spec image, above — will be unveiled at the Detroit show early next year. The production model won't hit dealers' lots until the second quarter of 2008, likely as a 2009 model. Basically, the Belgium-built ute will share Haldex AWD mechanicals with the Land Rover Freelander and a new platform with its V70 sibling. More »
