Play With It: Top Seven Examples Of Automaker-Video Game Industry Love-Making In New York

There's a trend I'm beginning to notice around the massive halls of auto shows: scattered among the sheet metal, booth babes and PR flacks, there's a hell of a lot of video games — both your standard issue Xbox-PlayStation3 setups as well as the more elaborate simulators. Taking a look at just a few of the many examples that appeared at the New York Auto Show this past week, I think this is more than just a way of giving journalists something to do between press conferences — it's representative of a trend. Here's our carmaker-by-carmaker breakdown of what has to be construed as either a strategy of building "appeal with the youths" — or an attempt by the car companies to distract everyone from their impending new "Second Malaise Era" with flashing lights and loud noises.

Burnout Paradise Demo Now Available on Xbox Live, with Extras!

The demo of the fifth installment of the Burnout series, Burnout Paradise, has hit Xbox Live as a free download for Xbox Live subscribers. Rumor has it there are some goodies within the demo. There are billboards scattered throughout the demo level that can be smashed through and will be counted. Rumor has it that there is a drivable Bumblebee rewarded for smashing through all of the billboards—nah, I'm just shitting you. I have no idea if there is a reward for smashing the billboards, but that would be sweet, right? [Kotaku]

Because we can show love to the Xbox fanboys out there, our gift list also includes this mighty fine peripheral, a must have for any serious Project Gotham or NFS racer. Need For Speed ProStreet Demo Hits Streets

Because some of us are older than dirt, we've got fond memories of rocking the Lamborghini Diablo VT on Need For Speed 2 for 3DO. (We were also probably listening to The Flaming Lips and under the influence of some kind of psychedelic root vegetable). Now, the most recent installment of EA's Need For Speed series, NFS ProStreet, is available to download for PC only ahead of its full launch next week. ProStreet includes new features such as the ability to tweak the car's internals, rather than just adding ridiculous body kits and paint. If you've seen the commercials, you also know the subject cars will show every drift-related scratch and dent. That means that when you race your friends online your R33 GT-R could end up looking like a LeMons racer. The game is due out November 14 stateside and will be available for PC, PS2, PS3, XBOX 360 and DS. [download right here via EuroGamer]

Forza Motorsport 2: Twin Ring Motegi

Yesterday, we sat down via the magic of telephone with Dan Greenawalt, Forza Motorsport 2's Game Director. We yammered for a quite a while about the trials and tribulations of game design; while I'm not much of a gamer myself, my inner designer's fascinated by what goes into putting together such a large-scale, detailed production like Forza, where the goal is to get the cars and tracks as true to life as possible while offering up an immersive gaming experience that moves units. On the 26th of this month, Forza's dropping a 14th track for the game — Japan's Twin Ring Motegi, a facility that's hosted everything from NASCAR to MotoGP and offers up four track configurations. More about Greenawalt's mission after the jump.

Frankfurt Auto Show: Peugeot Flux Concept, Design Contest Winner And Rocker Of In-Dash XBOX 360

Peugeot's latest design award winner, the Flux, an avant-garde roadster that's equal parts scifi space buggy circa 1972 and Swiss aspirin factory circa now. But despite its sterile aesthetic, we could see ourselves cruising the Corniche, following the post-apocalypse reconstruction period, in one of these things, daughter of an objectivist reactionary by our side, glumly. Oo! Oo! Did we mention it's got an XBOX 360 inside?

Art and Science Indeed: Cadillac Does Xbox 360

Cadillac announced today it would offer a free, promotional content pack for Project Gotham Racing 3 on Xbox 360. The package includes all the accoutrements needed to race Caddy's three high-performance V-Series models: the 400hp CTS-V, 469hp STS-V and 443hp XLR-V. What's more, gamers who can finish in the top 100 in any of the models on the virtual N rburgring Full F1 Circuit can gain "Cadillac Elite" status, which will probably entitle them to certain privelages (prizes, downloads and some such) at some undetermined point in the future. No word on the existance of any hidden vid-game easter eggs or, say, cheat codes for a 1964 Coupe deVille or 1979 8/6/4-powered Seville. Well? More »

Volvo Creates Xbox Advergame to Showcase Products

It's either a groundbreaking advertising feat or the setup for the most boring driving simulator in history. Volvo is becoming the first carmaker to create a driving game around its products, with its "Volvo Drive for Life" game, released this past Friday for Microsoft's Xbox. The company's description, though, is like a big, fat Percodan: "Players will experience firsthand the benefits of Volvo's world-class safety features such as Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Four-C Chassis, and Roll Stability Control (RSC), while testing their skills in the challenging game environment." Yikes. Extra points for picking the kids up on time and getting the dog groomed before soccer practice. (Image from Grand Tourismo 4.) More »
