<![CDATA[BMW X5 Security Plus Package: For When Soccer Practice Turns Deadly]]> The BMW X5 Security Plus is the first Class 6 armored vehicle publicly available direct from the manufacturer. Now little Billy and Suzie will be safe from AK-47 fire as mommy drives them to school.

The latest addition to the BMW Security line seriously ups the ante over the standard protection. This newly secured ute moves from providing protection from light arms fire to enough armor to shield the kids from the big-boy guns made by Mr. Kalashnikov. This beefed up version of the X5 Security gets thicker armor body panels, stronger bulletproof glass, an upgraded suspension, sealed body panels, run flat tires, a second bulletproof bulkhead behind the rear passengers, a PA system, optional cameras all around, and your choice of flashing lights so you can warn the other parents as you pull in for the soccer game.

A new level of comprehensive protection:The new BMW X5 Security Plus.BMW first high-volume manufacturer to offer a vehicle in the bullet resistance class 6.

(14.04.2009 Munich) BMW is extending its range of security vehicles by an additional model in a new protection class. The BMW X5 Security Plus complies with the requirements of bullet resistance class 6 (APR 2006), bringing versatile mobility and comprehensive protection against criminal assault into line with each other. It is the first vehicle produced by a high-volume manufacturer to offer a security concept aimed at lessening the danger of attacks using the world's most widely used handgun of the type AK 47. The vehicle, which was developed on the basis of the successful BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), offers room for up to four persons inside an exceptionally well-protected passenger cabin. Moreover, its superior drive and suspension technology also allows the driver to cope effortlessly with demanding situations, both on the road and on rough terrain. With the BMW X5 Security Plus, BMW is defining a new benchmark in protection against crime on the road.

The security concept for the BMW X5 Security Plus focuses on its armoured passenger cabin. It guarantees excellent protection, including the use of high-performance steel moulded components and panels. The body features sealed joints, which also provide protection in critical areas – e.g. between doors and frames as well as between side panels and pillars – thus preventing bullet or fragment penetration, as well as security glass conceived exclusively for this bullet resistance class. Furthermore, the windows resist attack using clubs, crowbars etc. and feature a polycarbonate coating that protects the interior from glass shatter.

BMW X5 Security Plus: Premiere for a new benchmark in security.
The BMW X5 Security Plus was tested in compliance with the BRV 1999 guideline for bullet-resistant vehicles and offers protection according to VPAM – APR 2006 in the bullet resistance class 6. The professional protection concept for the new BMW X5 Security Plus is, inter alia, designed to combat criminal threats such as robbery, abduction or carjacking, however, additionally for employment in hot spots in which the AK 47 has become a typical firearm used by assailants. The BMW X5 Security Plus offers comprehensive protection against these kind of attacks. Its security features were devised exclusively for this model and thoroughly tested within the framework of product development. The integration of the protective components was effected parallel to the series development of the BMW X5.

Effective protection as standard, perfectly tuned to the Sports Activity Vehicle.
Therefore, like all other BMW security vehicles, the BMW X5 Security Plus also offers comprehensive protection as standard. As opposed to retrofitted armour plating, BMW security vehicle assembly guarantees that all components are perfectly adapted to each specific model and, in addition, correspond the stringent BMW quality assurance guidelines. Assembly of the BMW X5 Security Plus is effected parallel to the production vehicle at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina/USA. The installation of protective features is performed in accordance with BMW processes at the Toluca plant (Mexico). BMW's more than 30 years of experience in security vehicle construction is apparent both in the development and the production of the BMW X5 Security Plus.

The standard security features of the BMW X5 Security Plus include, in addition to the effective armour plating, distinctive technical attributes that provide assistance in dealing with hazardous situations. An intercom system facilitates communication with persons outside the vehicle, without having to open doors or windows. The hold-up alarm ensures that windows and doors lock automatically. Furthermore, acoustic and visual alarm signals are emitted. The system's control elements are located behind a panel on the centre console. Optional features include a rear view camera which transmits its images to the control display of the iDrive operating system located on the dashboard, providing assistance during reversing. The camera of the side view system integrated into the front bumper offers a detailed overview of what is going on in front of the vehicle. For example, when leaving a multi-storey car park or driving through narrow gateways, it is possible to identify cross traffic in good time.

Furthermore, the standard features of the BMW X5 Security Plus also include bi-xenon headlights with adaptive cornering light. These ensure optimum visibility thanks to a light beam that follows the course of the bend. In addition, this cornering light function ensures premature illumination of the road ahead when changing direction at road junctions or driveways.

Agile and safe on any terrain.
Over and above the outstanding level of security, the BMW X5 Security Plus also impresses with the highest degree of comfort, first-class handling and extremely sporty road performance. Thanks to its generous interior, its powerful eight-cylinder engine and intelligent four-wheel drive BMW xDrive, it is adequately equipped both for everyday traffic as well as for situations requiring fast and flexible response.

The 4.8-litre V8 power unit of the BMW X5 Security Plus delivers an output of 261 kW/355 bhp and a maximum torque of 475 Nm achieved at an engine speed of 3,400 rpm. The BMW X5 Security Plus accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

Thanks to its intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive, the BMW X5 Security Plus is not restricted to driving on tarmac alone, but can also cope confidently with problematic off-road terrain. The cross-linking of the four-wheel drive with the stability control system DSC within the Integrated Chassis Management system (ICM) facilitates distribution of power that is optimally and precisely adapted to each driving situation. Taking into consideration the data supplied by the DSC sensors, iDrive transfers power at lightning speed to the wheels with the best traction.

The suspension featured by the BMW X5 Security Plus is perfectly adapted to the increased weight. For this purpose, specific suspension components such as springs and dampers have been employed and the software for suspension management has been adapted to the unique characteristics of a security vehicle. In order to further enhance superiority in demanding situations, the BMW X5 Security Plus features as standard a high-performance brake system, speed-dependent Active Steering and the Adaptive Drive system, comprising active anti-roll control and variable damper adjustment. In addition, the BMW X5 Security Plus boasts tyres with emergency running properties. This ensures that the tyres remain functional even after a total loss of pressure, e.g. after being shot at or after running over sharp or pointed objects. When the vehicle is partially loaded, they permit safe driving over a distance of around 150 kilometres at a speed of up to 80 km/h.

A further advantage of the protection concept available ex factory is the neutrally designed integration of all security components. Even to the practiced eye, security vehicles built by BMW can hardly be distinguished from corresponding production models. This does justice to customer demands for discretion and also provides passengers with a higher level of security.

At the same time BMW offers its customers comprehensive global support. This ranges from discreet consulting and all-round service to the supply of spare parts. All security vehicles are designed to facilitate maintenance and repair at regular BMW garages. The service also includes a company-owned pool comprising security and high-security vehicles.

Moreover, BMW provides special security vehicle driver training. These courses, which BMW has conducted for more than 20 years now, are offered at various grades, depending on the participants' previous knowledge, and are held at several different locations worldwide. These training courses are conducted by highly qualified experts. The contents range from comprehensive theoretical tuition and practical vehicle handling to instruction on tactical behaviour.

<![CDATA[BMW Developing Tri-Turbo Diesel For X5?]]> Just when we were beginning to lose faith in BMW, rumors begin to surface on a crazy new triple turbocharged diesel engine for an X5 Performance Diesel package. Intriguing would be an understatement.

According to unconfirmed reports, BMW has completed development on a tri-turbo version of the twin turbo diesel straight six already doing duty under the hood of the X5. The current 3.0-liter, twin-turbo I6 makes 265 HP but reportedly this upgrade would push output to a heady 354 HP with untold mountains of torque. It would be marketed under the Efficient dynamics banner and get a start-stop system and a regenerative braking system as well. We're most interested to learn how routing two cylinders of exhaust for each turbo will look, should this tasty rumor turn out to be true. [BMW Blog]

<![CDATA[Houston BMW X5 Driver Slams Car Through Parking Garage Wall]]> We could say a lot about careless people driving BMW SUVs around Houston, but these pictures of an X5 launched through a parking garage wall are worth a thousand words.

These photos come courtesy of our friend Matt of Eddie Griffen Enzo fame, who knows someone who works in the tower at the Greenway Plaza office complex in Houston where this accident occured. According to the local news no one was hurt. The vehicle and parking garage, however, are severely screwed up.

Any guesses as to what happened immediately before the accident?

<![CDATA[BMW X5 M, X6 M Minisite Source Code Reveals 550 HP Twin Scroll Details]]> It's possible BMW may not have hired the most clever web designers for the BMW X6 M website as the source code contains some rather telling tags, like "550 HP" and "Twin Scroll Twin Turbo."

Despite all outward appearances, we of the Jalop are by no means master web ninjas, but Firefox has this neat feature called "View Page Source" which lets you look under the hood of any website you visit. Doing so for the just-launched BMW X5 M and X6 M minisite reveals the following tag cloud:

Crafted at M, SAV, SAC, Sports Activity Vehicle, Sports Activity Coupe, E70 M, E71 M, X5M, X5 M, X6M, X6 M, M GmbH, BMW M, discussion, behind the scenes, news, spyshots, spyshot, prototype, disguise, disguised, testing, Nordschleife, Nürburgring, report, blog entry, image material, press, press release, eight-cylinder engine, V8, Twin Scroll Twin Turbo, 550 bhp, performance, motorsport, sport, dynamics, xDrive, X-Drive, all-wheel, Adaptive Drive, HUD, Head Up Display, dynamic, sophisticated, feedback, gills, lightweight, spaciousness

Oops. Seems the overzealous designers were hankering for some love from Google and included all the key details about the cars in an effort to maximize searchability. It's possible the details revealed here aren't exact, but we doubt it. So now we know they're both likely to get V8's equipped with two twin-scroll turbochargers blasting out a ridiculous 550 HP, all-wheel drive, heads-up display's and the same Adaptive Drive found on the 7-series. And what is this business of "gills?" The complete details will be arriving in thirty days when the vehicles are completely revealed, or sooner when some real h4xorz turn the website into swiss cheese. [BMW X M Minisite]

<![CDATA[Possible BMW X5M, X6M Prototypes Spotted In Spartanburg]]> Some are suggesting that the BMW X5 and X6 prototypes you see here will wear the sacred "M" badge when they reach production. The rules used to state that all BMW "M" cars must be naturally aspirated and rear-wheel-drive. But with rumors of turbochargers being bolted to future M-models, and now the prospect of these soft-roaders, presumably with power being sent to all four wheels, it looks like the rules laid down by the founding fathers are being shredded a-la the US constitution. But are we really seeing what we think we're seeing here?

Much as we still have faith in democracy, we're also skeptical as to whether or not these particular vehicles are M-prototypes — or if M-badged trucks are coming at all. For instance, you'd think that they'd fit an M-model with bigger wheels, and maybe even remove the roof rack, but then they are just prototypes. All enthusiasts should hope these are just sport editions — if they are full-blown M-models, there really is nothing sacred left. [palbay]

<![CDATA[2010 BMW X5 Shows Off Its New Nose]]> Someone must have gotten lazy at the Nordschleife and didn't remember to cover up the new nose on the twin-turbocharged V8-powered 2010 BMW X5. In this latest round of spy shots from the folks at KGP, we can clearly see the dramatic, M3-inspired front air dam and big new wheels to match the upgraded styling. This marks the second application for the twin-turbo eight cylinder which debuted in the BMW X6, and in the X5 it will be making 408 HP and providing a 0-60 time of just 5.5 seconds. The one thing it won't be doing is wearing the "M" badge. Check out the full spy report after the jump.

BMW's high-performance-but-not-quite-M-worthy X5 prototype has now shown more of its face, free from its normal frontal camouflage. The once-mysterious X5 program has now become much clearer with today's photos, and some earlier engine shots revealing what appears to be a twin-turbocharged V8.

The hot X5's front fascia uses all of the cues consistent with BMW's Motorsport division, but sources report that an M-badged X5 is not in the cards — the X5's weight, height, and packaging are just too compromised for a proper M-car. But by the looks and sounds of this turbocharged V8 model as it circled the 'Ring, it will certainly give the top Porsche Cayenne some serious competition.

<![CDATA[2010 BMW X5 Spotted With 4.4-Liter 408 HP Twin-Turbo V8 From X6]]> BMW_X5_V8.jpgAccording to Car Magazine, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that debuted in the BMW X6 is coming to the 2010 BMW X5. That'll give the X5 408 HP, a 155 MPH top speed, and a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds; just a hair slower than the X6.

Expect it to also gain an X6-style front end with big air intakes and a sculpted hood. There's no word on whether or not Dynamic Performance Control (the technology that really gives the X6 its magic) will trickle down to the X5, but we wouldn't rule it out. The new engine could also bring with it the "is" badge, like the previous generation X5's 4.8is range-topper.

We've driven an X6 equipped with the V8, and while its performance is indisputably impressive, we preferred the slightly slower twin-turbo inline-six. The V8 weighs the X6's nose down too much, while the awful gearbox and turbo lag make exploiting the engine's full potential frustrating. Based on the same chassis, we can see no reason why the same won't be true of the so-equipped X5.

Well, think again. We've just found an SUV that's a perfect example of how to take a car that's merely a vague rip-off and turn it into a blatant copy. It's like design reverse-engineering — being reversed. Originally starting life as a Shuan Huang SCEO, this SUV's basic shape was already very BMW-like. <![CDATA[LUMMA Design CLR X530 Is Like a Diesel X5, But Whiter And With 487lb/ft Of Torque]]> The LUMMA CLR X530 combines three of our favorite things: white paint, the current X5 and a tuned diesel engine. The 3L turbo diesel makes 470lb/ft of torque and 330bhp thanks to an amped-up turbo and remapped chip. Also present is the de rigueur performance exhaust, which makes us fantasize about huge plumes of black smoke clouding up the crisp white bodywork. Mmmmmm, diesel.

As we're sure you've noticed by now LUMMA have also seen fit to include an extravagant but somehow decent looking body kit and white wheels. A host of other minor interior and exterior modifications rounds out the package. We'd take ours without the visual modifications, using it as a combination sleeper / tower, hauling trailers full of dirt bikes down the Autobahn at three figure speeds.

<![CDATA[BMW Diesel Mild Hybrid X5 Concept Officially Revealed, Officially Has A Silly Name]]> We've been saying for years the only efficient hybrid with current technology is one mated to a diesel engine, and now it looks like another automaker is jumping into the conceptual fray. Our little news yesterday on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics X5 — translated from Bruce, that appears to be an X5 outfitted with a 2.0-liter twin turbo common rail diesel mild hybrid (wow, that's a mouthful, ain't it?) — appears to be wholly true. BMW will be revealing this little concept in environmentally friendly CUV-ing at the Geneva Motor Show next month and they've now seen fit to reveal the rest of their press shots and the full press release, which we've got below the jump. Feel free to read through it if you're suffering from a strong desire to fall back into bed. For now, here's the gist of it — hybrid + diesel + BMW = Over 100 HP per liter (total of 204 HP), 295 lb-ft of torque between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Exciting, isn't it?

BMW VISION EFFICIENTDYNAMICS AT THE 78TH INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Character:
• World premiere of the concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics,
showing a further stage in the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy. The first time a 4-cylinder diesel engine has been combined with BMW ActiveHybrid Technology in a large Sports Activity Vehicle.
• The concept study based on a BMW X5 - even as a serial production model extremely efficient and dynamic - shows the unique potential
of technology developed as part of the BMW EfficientDynamics programme. It combines BMW's superior diesel expertise with the innovative BMW ActiveHybrid Technology. A further increase in efficiency
is achieved by means of BMW EfficientDynamics measures in the environment of the combustion engine by optimising energy flow and aerodynamics.
• By intelligently combining a combustion engine and a generator as part
of a Mild Hybrid concept, dynamic performance and efficiency are increased to an equal degree. With the extensive deployment of measures which are in some cases ready for serial production and were in some cases specially developed for this study, there is maximum utilisation of the potential of BMW EfficientDynamics for the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels up to the limits of what is feasible within the
BMW X5 vehicle segment. At the same time, the study clearly shows that any additional increase in efficiency over and above the highly efficient BMW vehicles already available today can only be achieved by means of
an exponential increase in effort and expense.
• With an average fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the
EU test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 172 grams per kilometre,
BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is by far the most efficient vehicle of its
size in the competitive environment of the BMW X models. The significant reduction of fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels is realised having to forego BMW's characteristic driving dynamics. In addition to acceleration (0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds), comfort and versatility are also at the level of a large SAV - but in conjunction with the fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels of conventional vehicles in the compact class.
Technology:
• The 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine with Variable Twin Turbo, common
rail injection of the third generation and all-aluminium crankcase
housing delivers 150 kW/204 bhp and generates a maximum torque of 400 Nm between 2,000 and 2,250 rpm. It is the first diesel in the
world with a specific power output of over 100 bhp per litre of capacity.
• BMW ActiveHybrid is based on a modular principle which allows
the integration of the best possible components in differing concepts, according to the "Best of Hybrid" strategy. The components used in
the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics study - Mild Hybrid and 4-cylinder diesel - harmonise just as perfectly as the combination of Full Hybrid and the 8-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid.
• The innovative hybrid system of the concept study BMW Vision EfficientDynamics reflects the most sophisticated stage of development of intelligent energy management in the vehicle to date. In the Mild Hybrid concept, the generator contributes to vehicle acceleration with 15 kW and
a maximum torque of 210 Nm. The total output of the vehicle is 165 kW.
The hybrid technology thus increases the dynamic potential of the
4-cylinder diesel engine in way which is in keeping with the character of the BMW X5, as well as enabling the combination of a small engine with
a large vehicle in the first place. What is more, the generator produces electricity to supply the power consumers in the vehicle by means of
Brake Energy Regeneration. This minimises the direct conversion of fuel into electrical energy and maximises the drive torque available for conversion into driving dynamics.
• Power generation: the compact generator, integrated in the crankcase housing, replaces a conventional generator powered directly by the engine. Electrical energy is produced by Brake Energy Regeneration with a unique degree of efficiency without impairing the drive torque of the engine. The high-power electronic system - for the first time flange-mounted directly onto the gearbox - allows a compact design which has never been possible before, as well as a sound arrangement of the hybrid components.
• Battery: a high-performance, package-appropriate lithium-ion battery integrated in the luggage compartment supplies the vehicle electrical system. Its high storage capacity enables optimum exploitation of the potential provided by Brake Energy Regeneration.
• Use of electrical power: due to the higher level of electrical power output available, additional vehicle functions can be powered purely electrically. The Auto Start/Stop Function for avoiding idling phases of the combustion engine is available virtually all the time and without any loss of comfort in conjunction with ActiveHybrid Technology.
• The hybrid module is based on a technology which was conceived as
part of the hybrid co-operation between BMW and Daimler. The hybrid co-operation successfully develops components for hybrid drives including high-power electronic systems and high-volt batteries. Here, the specific BMW design of the hybrid drive systems is ensured.
• The concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is fitted with a novel,
highly efficient 8-speed automatic transmission developed jointly by
BMW and ZF Getriebe GmbH. Presented here for the first time and ready for serial production use, this 8-speed automatic transmission makes
an additional contribution to reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions with its direct connection to the engine and minimised torque-converter slip. The further increased shift dynamics and direct-find function for moving into the selected driving position promote a dynamic driving response. Power transmission is effected via the intelligent all-wheel
drive system BMW xDrive, i.e. fully variably between the front and rear axle.
• In the concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics there is also a solar
roof which acts as an additional energy source for the vehicle power supply which is independent of the engine. High-power solar cells covering
a surface area of some 1.0 square metres generate a maximum energy
of one kilowatt hour for consumers inside and outside the vehicle. This enables pre-heating of the gear oil, thereby shortening the inefficient warm-up phase. What is more, direct energy supply is possible during standstill
for ventilation or for operating a cool box, audio equipment, a mobile phone charger or for charging the vehicle battery, for example. This optimised
the availability and use of electrical energy in a way which is CO2-neutral.

Exterior design:
• BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is based visually and technologically
on the BMW X5. The BMW ActiveHybrid components are integrated in the vehicle in a way which is appropriate to the overall package. The generator and high-power electronic system are integrated in the transmission casing and thus invisible from the outside. A specially designed load compartment recess reflects the compact design of the lithium-ion battery.
• An innovative rim design opens up additional potential in the optimi-
sation of aerodynamics. The aero wheels of the concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics make an additional contribution to reducing fuel consumption, for example by requiring one kilowatt less of propulsion power at a speed of 160 km/h. The aerodynamic shaping of the spokes reduces rim ventilation. This has a positive impact on the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle.

<![CDATA[BMW X5 Twin Turbo Diesel Hybrid Concept Coming To Geneva, It's Happening... Maybe]]> It seems that the cat is out of the bag and we now think we know what BMW will be highlighting, eco-wise, at this year's Geneva Motor Show. You know all that pleading for more diesel hybrids? According to CarScoop, the boys and girls form Bavaria will be showing off the "Vision EfficeintDynamics" which will be better known as an X5 with a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder mated to a hybrid system through an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to BMW, the system should apparently be good for 36.5 mpg (US) while still pulling the SUV to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds. The diesel engine produces 204 horsepower, but with help from the hybrid system achieves 224 horsepower and nearly 450 ft.-lb. of torque.

In addition to the hybrid system, this concept version features brake regeneration and roof-mounted solar panels that create energy that can be used to pre-heat the diesel fuel. Thinking aerodynamically, the 19-inch light alloy wheels are sort of Wal-Mart looking but overall efficient. We're waiting for official confirmation, but in the meantime this does fit with comments made by Prof. Dr. Burkhard Goschel from BMW on the future of BMW engines back in 2004. [CarScoop]

<![CDATA[Detroit Auto Show: BMW To Bring More Diesels To The USA In 2008 Including Diesel 3-Series]]> We already told you that new BMW X6 would feature a diesel mill, and now we get more information on BMW's diesel plans, which includes the introduction of a Diesel X5 xDrive 35d and BMW 335d Diesel 3-series. The new powerplant will apparently be a 265 horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six with twin turbos capable of 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. And it's 50 state legal! More below the jump.

Debuting at the Detroit Auto Show, the BMW 335d will achieve 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds with a fuel economy of 23/33 mpg. By comparison, the new X5 with diesel will scoot to 62 mph in approximately 7.2 seconds with fuel economy of 19/25 mpg. To reduce emissions, the new engine features a Urea system (that's pee) with an AdBlue tank system that'll get changed for the first fours years or 50,000 miles by BMW technicians. [AutoSpies]

<![CDATA[BMW X5 M?]]> Or would that be MX5? Oh wait, that's a tiny little rear-wheel drive convertible from Japan. This is a big AWD luxury SUV from Bavaria. First Porsche "diluted" their brand by rolling out the Cayenne (though in Turbo guise, it's a hell of a truck) and for a while at least, they sold the hell out of them. This didn't go unnoticed by die volks at BMW. It looks as if Motor Authority has snagged some spy shots of what very well might be the Roundel's response, an M version of the X5. Note the dual-pipes. Engine speculation is rampant, but the uber truck could come complete with the screaming F1-derived 5.0-liter V10 out of the M5, or it could have a new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 good for a rumored 430 horses. Sounds fun, but would an X5 M be a dilution of the M brand? [motorauthority.com]

<![CDATA[BMW Welcomes iPhone, We Think iPhone May Even Welcome Them Back]]> If you just unpacked your iPhone and you've got yourself a BMW 3 and 5 Series with 03/07 production, the X5 with 04/07 production and the 6 Series with 09/07 production dates equipped with an iPod/USB interface — guess what? You'll be able to drop the iPhone into your ride and faster than you can say "Boom!" in your best German accent — you'll be good to go. Or at least that's what we've learned from the following site that's just been pointed out to us below. What level of integration that means, we've no idea — but since BMW was the first to provide iPod support, one should expect they'd be first out the gate with iPhone support.

<![CDATA[Hamann BMW X5 E70]]>

A band of noble Swabian tuners from Laupheim just introduced their latest program for the latest BMW X5. No, we're not talking about the agnatic line of the Ellerbach dynasty, it's Hamann, which has been on a tear recently. The company's tuned X5 has been messed with entirely, from engine to suspension, wheels, interior and aerodynamics. There's no mondo superchargers under the hood, just a Motronics ECU kit, so don't get all drooley. Still, anything to lower the center of gravity and add aero stickiness is probably for the best. Especially if you absolutely, positively have to traverse Baden-Württemberg in an afternoon.

Press Release:

Swabian Tuning for Bavarian elegant-SAV:
New BMW X5 with extensive modifications from HAMANN

• Aerodynamic parts for sportier debut
• Increase in performance for 3.0si, 3.0d and 4.8i
• Agile road handling through sport springs
• four wheel designs available in three sizes

One of the most successful cars of its class is the BMW X5. BMW only recently introduced its latest successor and HAMANN has already put together a complete program for the new X5. Hardly any area has been left untouched. Whether it's suspension, wheels, performance, interior or aerodynamics, the Laupheim German specialists provide clear individualisation launching far above the norm

New aerodynamic components are mandatory hence HAMANN begins with a new front spoiler that lends the SAV X5 a significant powerful feature. It´s mounted on the series-produced front apron. In back HAMANN added a rear apron seizing the design of the front spoiler to match. This component is also affixed to the series-produced parts. A further sporty accent shines through with the HAMANN roof spoiler, providing a stabilizing effect.

With such a large vehicle, every miniscule of power counts. For this reason, HAMANN reprogrammed the series-produced Motronic. The X5 3.0si received subsequently a power boost to about 14 PS/10kW and 25 Nm more torque. The X5 3.0d (with it´s basic 235 PS/173 kW) is raised by the tuners to 265 PS/ 195 kW and 600 Nm and 8-cylinder model 4.8i jumps by 18 PS/ 13 kW for more power and torque increase as well.

Not an easy choice!

Pondering over wheel choices will require the majority of customers´ time. Here are four designs of choice including PG3, Anniversary I and II as well as Edition Race.

The noble tuners from Laupheim present a multi-pieced wheel PG3 available in silver finish with high-polished flange. It´s characterized through the sporty five-spoke design.

The one-pieced wheel Anniversary I portrays a light footing with its´ multi-spoke design. HAMANN supplies these in silver finish with INOX stainless steel lip flange. The multi-pieced light alloy wheel Anniversary II exhibits a multi-spoke design as well projecting a feeling of pure motor sports. The silver rims with high-polished flange reflects both nobility and luxury simultaneously.

The appearance of the three-piece, ultra light forged wheels Edition Race in crossing spoke design and black wheel spider is identified through its´ nine main spokes double-attached, branching and continually double-crossing towards the outside rim. Its´ stirring design becomes particularly noticeable through Titan studs. The high-polished flange is icing on the cake to complete this luxurious look.

PG3 and Anniversary I are available through HAMANN for the X5 in 20 and 22-inch, Anniversary II in 22-inch and the wheel Edition Race comes in an impressive 23-inch. Naturally HAMANN offers the wheels in form of complete wheel sets.

Typical wheel / tire combinations::
Edition Race: FA/RA 10,5 Jx23 315/25R23 102Y XL
PG3: FA /RA 10,5 J x 22 295/30 ZR 22
PG3: FA/RA 9,5 J x 20 295/40 ZR 20
Anniversary II: FA/RA 10,5 J x 22 295/30 ZR 22
Anniversary I: FA/RA 10,5 J x 22 295/30 ZR 22
Anniversary I: FA/RA 10,5 J x 20 295/40 ZR 20
Anniversary I: FA/RA 10,5 J x 20 FA 275/40 ZR20 / RA 315/35 ZR 20

By using a set of progressive suspension springs, HAMANN reduces the center of gravity for the X5 . For those vehicles that have level regulation, it is lowered to about 40 mm in front, and for vehicles without level regulation or air suspension to about 40 mm in front and about 30 mm in back. Through this, the X5 receives a bit of agility back which, in contrast to its´ predecessor model, had suffered somewhat due to its bigger size.

Interior modifications per request

Large vehicles such as the BMW X5 are tailor-made for travel. Due to this, HAMANN also modified the interior. Travellers should have the drive be as comfortable as possible and additionally should provide a feast for the eyes. HAMANNs´ accessories such as an exclusive foot mat flooring in black, a foot pedal of aluminium or even an aluminium foot rest enhance the cockpit of the X5. Naturally HAMANN also modifies each BMW X5 for personalized customer requests. For example, extravagant leather decor is available in a variety of colours or an elaborate multimedia alterations including DVD, TV and Play station.

<![CDATA[Macedonian Politician Driving Beckham's Stolen Bimmer?]]> Remember that time a bumbling parking attendant let soccer superstar David Beckham's $200K armored BMW X5 get stolen? As you might have expected if you're on mushrooms and kind of psychic, it has turned up in the driveway of Gordana Jankulovska, Macedonia's interior minister.

How is this possible? The car was seized in the country and deemed stolen (I guess not a lot of Macedonians are driving around in $200K bimmers). When no one claimed it, the ute was turned over to the government who then turned it over to the country's interior minister, who promptly asked no questions. The interior minister is a fan and hopes to turn the car over personally in order to meet the Beckster, after which she's probably going to club him over the head and seize him for the Macedonian national soccer team.

<![CDATA[BMW Precision Cures Insomnia]]> An afternoon press conference from the superior engineering crowd over at BMW didn't exactly infuse excitement in the already weary and jet-lagged crowd. BMW will continue to use clever internal combustion to achieve greater efficiency and create more horsepower. The Bavarians will utilize valvetronics, and have gone through great lengths to make the cars look happier. The coming X6 will bring Bavarian charm and dollars to Spartansburg, North South Carolina. BMW plans to continue lightening up the suspension for more precise handling. Business activities have been good overall. None of this news phased the unsprung masses, a few of whom made like Rip Van Winkle instead of Nick Heidfeld. Bottles of exhaust from the Hydrogen 7 were also served

<![CDATA[Wait? Are Luxo-Ute Drivers Speeders?]]>

We've mostly decided we're tired of SUVs. We've owned one for three years, and the utility is fantastic, and worked wonderfully for us for a while. But now that we rarely drive (and if we do, it's often in a press or rental car), we're thinking about ditching ours for something that's well, more fun. Also, we're tired of SUV assholes, and if there's any relation between Americans and their British forefathers, well, check out the bit after the jump.

In a survey of the most common vehicles nicked for speeding, the X3, X5 and XC90 were all implicated in the top ten. What does this tell us? The article's author links it to the power of the vehicle. But c'mon, the Z4 and the 330i were also indicted. Obviously, the problem is assholes, not the cars. (Heartfelt apologies to Momma Wert, the Quandt family and Chris Bangle.)
