The regional rail is still running (albeit with long delays and other provisos,) as are the suburban bus lines.

I don't know much about the strike, despite living here, but frankly, with unemployment and demand for jobs so high, I wouldn't feel too bad if SEPTA just hired new employees to replace the ones who stopped working.

I will say that in my experience living here for two years now, SEPTA officials on the subway, bus, and rail have always been courteous and helpful at best and tolerably surly at worst.

But this simply isn't a good time for anyone to strike. Jobs are too precious to treat so cavalierly, or cobaltly, or even cruzely.

These damn unions. They already have excessively light workloads and raises on a regular basis. They seem to always strike because they're not getting as much money as they'd like.

In the city where I live the administration tried to get the teachers union to agree to budget cuts. What they managed to agree on was no pay increase for a year and then generous increases every 6 months for the following 2 years. Isn't that nice? And the head of the of the Board of Education earns well over $200k a year and claims she needs her raise to cover cost of living increases.

When was the last time a union actually went on strike because of truly abusive practices by the employer? 1915? Today unions are their own form of abusive big business. #unions

52K on average a year. That is a pretty good average for a wage. Not sure if the benny's are in that also but I'd have to think yes. Still. Good wage.

Striking during negotiations always seems like a last straw attempt. This will make national news and be shoved down our throats by the MSM after today's elections.

Compared to what Reagan did back in the day, I wonder what BHO's reaction will be? #unions

As a regularish SEPTA rider though, I can assure you that they are overpaid, underworked and horrible people in general. #unions

@jodark: Oh, don't worry, if you live in Philly, and don't belong to one, you hate the unions. I'm just saying that it's not a national problem, just a relatively small (albeit incredibly annoying) local one, and I don't see Obama going near it. This is the third time these dipshits have paralyzed Philly in the last 15 years, but thankfully local support for their "cause" (read: extortion) is at an all-time low. #unions

They want 4% annual raise (22% over 5 years), the offer was 11.5% over 5 years. Philly needs to pull a Reagan and can all of them.

@Flathead Smith: That verywell might happen, it wouldn't be all that hard to keep the strike going, hire on a whole workforce and then end the strike with what ever consessions necessary and then fire them when they get back for not showing up for work for the past few weeks or how ever long they prolong the strike.

It would kill the union and set a precident for other citys.

They are screwing with the Gov't and even at municipal levels it's near impossible to win against government. #unions

I'd get them all to come to a negotation, All of them or no negotiations, then when they're about to sign give Nesbit or whats his name the signal for the swat teams to take em all out. I hate overpriveleged union workers. Coal miners can strike, steel workers can strike and physicla laborers can strike. Fucking bus drivers? NO. #unions
