<![CDATA[ Scrapping a Porsche? Build a PC! ]]> Heaven forbid a Porsche Cayenne would ever have to be parted out, but if so, here's one way to make use of the 18-inch wheel shell. The creation was made as part of hardware manufacturer NVIDIA's computer case modding contest for Top Mods, a computer modding publication.

A custom-made acrylic disc brake is also used to give NVIDIA's SLI branding a little love and the two exhaust pipes do function for the PC's radiator, which assists in the water cooling. The green glow is a bit too teenage-tuner for our likes, but maybe if the wheel shell was from a 1999 Honda CRX. [Gizmodo]

<![CDATA[ Way to Ruin Hello Kitty...Again ]]> hello-kitty-rims.jpgSo, we saw this a couple of days ago, but we've been taking some time to ponder our response to these aftermarket Hello Kitty wheels. Since one of us is a big Hello Kitty fan, people are always sending me links to all things HK, along with messages that say things like, "look how cute!" or, "I bet you'd love this!" The fact of the matter is, no, I do not like most of them. Sure enough, I got a similar message today when Kitty Hell posted a photo of the latest item to be butchered: A set of Hello Kitty wheels.

Why do I feel this way? The same reason I don't like knockoff Gucci sunglasses, or BMW's recent "car in every garage" marketing strategy, or the Porsche Boxster, or overexposed couture logos on $10 tee shirts. Mass merchandising cheapens a brand. Would we hold Koenigsegg or Bugatti in the same esteem if those companies were producing watered-down, entry-level versions within the reach of the unwashed masses?

It's not just about availability or price, either. It's mostly comes right down to aesthetics. Much of the Hello Kitty stuff I come across is done so poorly or is so blatantly cheesy that it just kills the cuteness that is Hello Kitty (which includes the photo of the pink Testarossa floating around the "Internets"). I'm sure there's a better way to execute $900 rims. Personally, a small etching of Hello Kitty on the hub would suffice. Subtlety speaks volumes. Come on, people. [Kitty Hell via Autoblog

<![CDATA[ Artificially Intelligent Wheels To Make Cars Faster ]]> lr1_1024.jpgScientists in England have developed AI equipped wheels capable of improving both the safety and speed of cars. Developed at the University of Portsmouth, sensors in each wheel will control the brakes, suspension and steering, all while communicating with each other and learning from their actions. A Researcher from the University was quoted in The Epoch Times as saying, "We have taken the wheel, given it brains and the ability to think and learn. It's a huge breakthrough." The wheels are as yet unequipped with Isaac Asimov's Three Laws.

<![CDATA[ Light Wheels: Project Kahn's RS-X ]]>

Attention well-heeled supercar drivers looking to shed a few ugly pounds. The design prop-heads at the UK's Project Kahn have come up with a wheel that weighs as much as a load of laundry. It's the RS-X, which sports a carbon fiber rim around a magnesium core. The result is a major reduction in radial inertia, resulting in improved acceleration, and unsprung weight, which affects handling responses. Each set is custom made for each vehicle, and at a price of around $6000 $4000 per wheel, you might want to hit AutoZone for a set of curb feelers.

<![CDATA[ Shiny Diamonds, Like the Eyes of a Cat in the Black and Blue: Ice Rims ]]> icerim.jpg

Oh bugger. Did we really need 28" dubs embedded with your choice of zircs or diamonds? Apparently, some company called Yokebir thinks we do, and they've delivered their 924 Shock & Awe Series to do just that. We doubt that the "924" has anything to do with 924 Gilman Street, but we'd love to see what the teenage punkers hanging outside the club would think of these. In our day, they would've been done in like Jello Biafra. But the kids these days, with their Travis Barkers and whatnot, well, we just don't know. And that, frankly, makes us a little sad.

Wheel geeks (you know who you are) must check out one of the inventions dreamed up by the engineers at Airtrax. It's a multi-surface, multi-hub roller wheel thingie that allows the company's Multi-Purpose Mobility Platform to roll in any direction (except upward). You just know some nutter is working on a version for Hummers. And damn well he should be. [Thanks to Joe for the tip.]

Takeaways from the online commercial for Pimpstar light-up rims by Dub Wheels: 1) Blondes are intrigued by shiny objects. 2) You can change the LED design on the fly, using software and a wireless modem. 3) Chicks may or may not respond to being propositioned by guys who flash their phone number on a chrome wheel. 4) Green faces are scary.
