There's really no reason for this car to come to the US market. Used cars are better in just about every way.

India and other developing nations don't have 20-50+ years of cars to choose from so the Nano makes sense there. But in the US?

@philipmein: Used cars are better in just about every way? Well, I think the Nano, being so simple, has close to no maintenance costs.. a used car that cost $2000 on the other hand, may cost you a lot when something goes wrong, besides the fuel economy that sux on most cars when they are 10 or 15 year old.

The idea of bringing the Nano here to the US is ridiculous. There's way too much space on the roads for anyone to want to be cramped up in something that small.

The idea of having the Nano on streets in India (where I hail from) is also ridiculous. And for the opposite of the same reason. There's too *little* space. I'd rather have half the population continue to ride bikes in India than have them now occupy 2 or 3 times the road space that wasn't there to spare in the first place.

@laughing_guitarist: I made that exact point the other day. Instead of, say, two guys sharing a motorcycle or carpooling in a van, you'll eventually have one or two people in a Nano. The use of space will become less efficient, and gridlock and pollution will get worse.

I still support the idea of this car, but I also fear for the isolationism that has been created in a lot of the West--due in large part to cars.

The Nano is big news in India, where it offers an alternative to folks that would ordinarily be only able to afford a motorcycle or scooter. Here, the $2000 car is like the 25-cent plate of spaghetti that is really just ketchup. With no plate.

I love it. Simple, cheap, and presumably safer than the 25-year-old, three-wheeled motorized carts they'll be replacing. It's like Smart, but instead of appealing to 20% of European drivers, it'll appeal to 20% of the world's drivers. Good for them. Can't wait to see some variants.

You know what is good about the Tata Nano, the never even tried to hype it up.

They did throw a curveball when they announced that customer service would be located in America. I don't know why, but the CEO of Tata laughed when he said that. Something about the Americans working for less, more efficient.

He even said they'll be using Indian names, so the Indian Tata Nano drivers feel more comfortable when they call.
