On top of all of the achievements Ray has noted, Cronkite managed to remain a class act in his public presentation- something many in the limelight seem incapable of these days.
He also co-drove in the 1959 12 Hours of Sebring, yes? Finished 5th in class in his Lancia Zagato with 2 other co-drivers. I heard he also drove a Lotus 11 at times (Bridgehampton & Lime Rock)...Can anyone confirm?
Also, can you imagine some prettyboy/girl talking head having the brain and the courage to call out the present administration on Iraq or Afghanistan or Pakistan or the economy any other major policy?
Gone are the days when reporters get first hand information, analyze it brilliantly, and then stand up with a conclusion, consequences be damned. Thanks for helping end the Vietnam War, Walter.
The families of 2 million dead Cambodians may not think so highly of him. And bty uncle cronky does not think us Americans are smart enough to elect our own leaders.
But, I do tip my hat to his automotive enthusiasm.
The best part is they will now have to change the CBS Evening News voice-over intro---Katie Couric will have to prop up her credibility some other way.
That's the closest Walter ever came to selling out.
Walter, your newscasts and special bulletins are inextricably tied in with the great -- and horrible -- moments of my memories.
Very sad. Quality guy, and a stand up journalist of the sort we just don't see anymore. Thanks for sticking around as long as you did, and for carrying more than your share of the weight.
@stoke has a JDM front wing: MJ's firetruck was probably the biggest stretch, followed by Billy Mays' pitching some auto themed gadgets. Farrah's role in the automotive "classic" Cannonball Run makes for a legitimate automotive connection.
Cronkite's racing history might be lesser known, but it is probably the most Jalopnik connection to the cult of cars since the passing of Paul Newman.
Feel free to complain about oblique automotive references when a celebrity obit contains no more than "...reportedly used to drive a Nissan Altima..."
@JCWhitless:"..Didn't he work with a puppet and interview Genghis Khan once..?"
The way I heard it from your neighbor, was that it was you working a sock puppet in front of the mirror in 1973. And Cronkite was a ghostly reflection of the TV over your right shoulder. Of course how you remember it may be related to the jimsonweed tea. It's all there in the police report, in case you are still foggy on the details.

Actually, your founding fathers didn't think you were smart enough either.

He also lived across the street from my Dad in Manhattan, 84th and York. Nice neighborhood.
