Perhaps not the most stylish of the Mercedes coupes, but I do miss the clean, stolid German look of this era.
I wish a blog would start a contest where car design students are challenged to "draw" concepts that update this look. Today's Mercedes have lost their originality.
I don't know when the last time is I saw a two-door. the profile with the front and back porch bumpers is hilarious but otherwise this is a class act. Great find!
Man, these cars are awesome! I wish Mercedes would put this type of grill on the new E-Class coupe. Not a big fan of the sport look on the new one. but it's not bad. Damn I love the W114.
Dammit, don't remind me of these cars. Reminds me of the one I bought that turned out to be almost as big of a piece of shit as the mechanic that checked it out and gave me the green light to buy it. It's still rotting at my cousin's shop after a year and a half. Ugh.
@eldo500: At least you can console yourself with the fact that you own a very pretty piece of automotive sculpture. That's how I manage to hold on to an Alfa, in those long periods between being operational.
@Tomsk welcomes the Jezebanned home: It has a built SBC under the hood, along with one of the most mickey-moused exhaust systems I've ever seen. The registers are to help keep the underhood temp in check... or something.
Haven't seen one of these on the road in quite some time. The W114 coupes are to me among the least attractive of Mercedes two-doors. The sqaurish roofline atop the blocky body looks a little awkward, and doesn't work as well as the sedan. It's as if the stylists had to really struggle to adapt the body to a coupe style. The previous "fintail" coupes and the followup W123 coupes are far prettier to my eyes.
@tonyola: how much I disagree with you, I believe this car is a primer exponent of the 70's and 80's german school of design...
Boxy? check
Pastel colors? check
Color matching hubcaps? oh yes, please!
Someone should send this one back to Mercedes Benz. Maybe it would help them remember how to build the world's best sedans. I'd much rather have this than a new MB.
Mercedes quality slipped after the W126, so from '92-on. My 126 is considered the last "true" Benz by those who own them, and many have tried the newer ones, yet have gone back.
European headlights are radically different than the sealed-beam garbage we have in the States. Different bulbs, different patterns, just flat-out different...and very-highly sought by us here in the US, BTW.
DoctorNine...you hit on why I laugh when my 20 year old beast has fewer problems than a 7 year old Kia, and is also worth more.
European headlights are definitely better looking, and usually better performing than the DOT-mandated (thanks in no small part to money from Westinghouse, if you believe the rumors) bits.
Lastly, what year and model W126 do you have? I have an '83 300 SD.

And that wheel cover style was in use until the mid-80's with the 123.
I think with the 124/126 they were alloy-only.
