It'll be called the Volkswagen Amarok. In some dialects, the name means "loves stones" and in Inuit Eskimo, means "wolf." What? Das Germans didn't want to call it "Wolfenstein?" [PickupTrucks]

<![CDATA[Volkswagen Pickup Robust-ly Runs... The Nürburgring?!]]> Volkswagen's out to exercise its future truck's ride and handling qualities. Although sometimes thought as being quite Robust, there's no word from VW whether the pickup broke the Ring's all-important 7-minute mark. [PickupTrucks]

<![CDATA[VW Pickup Does Its Best Baywatch Ripoff]]> Watch this video of the VW Pickup and try not to hear the theme song from Baywatch as you do. Seriously, we knew the Germans had a thing for the Hoff, but this is getting ridiculous. The little video even maintains the same high production standards as the 90's series, with a conveniently placed wave runner appearing out of nowhere. The VW Pickup will be ready, don't you fear, forever and always, its almost here. [Volkswagen]

<![CDATA[VW Pickup Concept Revealed, Potentially Named "Pickup"]]> Wow, yeah, these are apparently press shots of the VW Pickup concept to be revealed at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover, Germany this week decked out in "Search and Rescue" gear. Well, sort of — they dropped some stickers on it and put some life preservers and a fire extinguisher in the back and called it a day. They also may have skimped on the name, because although we don't have it yet, there is a name on the back license plate — and it's simply "Pickup." Still, what's in a name anyway? Especially when that liftgate's pretty trick if you ask us. We're told to expect a press release soon on the VW pickup truck that's not called the "Robust." And does it really matter? Especially as we won't be getting it here anyway?

<![CDATA[2010 Volkswagen Robust Pickup Spied In United States]]> Despite rumors that VW won't sell its upcoming pickup, the "Robust" (that probably won't be its final name) in the US, the company does appear to be conducting hot weather testing here. It looks like the 2010 VW Pickup will be sold exclusively in markets that appreciate simple, well-engineered, utilitarian pickups rather than leather-trimmed, gargantuan lifestyle accessories. Befitting that purpose, a range of common-rail diesels will be offered in addition to a gasoline V6.

Earlier rumors indicated the pickup would be built in both Germany and Argentina. Now it appears production will take place in Argentina only, pointing to an emphasis on the South American market. VW plans to build around 90,000 pickups annually, which may or may not be called Robust.

Jalopnik Snap Judgment: A simple, well-engineered, economical, utilitarian pickup truck? Heresy! Everyone knows a real pickup must be equipped with a lift kit, an 8.0-liter V10 and hood stripes in order to be taken seriously. We're just glad VW will be keeping its terrorist-mobile south of the border, stick those damn terrorists South Americans with a stupid, practical truck, they deserve it.

<![CDATA[Volkswagen Robust Pickup Truck Photos Show The Germans Are Closetotrücken]]> That's right folks, this is the first photo of the upcoming Volkswagen Robust — VW's pickup truck pants party gate crasher. Although the segment was once dominated by the 'mericans, it seems everyone's checking their coat at the door in exchange for a pair of steel-toes. But those boots'll be sitting in a double-cab that'll have some 4x4 capabilities. And it'll have to, because In addition to the Robust, we're also expecting to see a full-size SUV built on the same platform to sit smack dab in the center of the Tiguan and Touareg in VW's current lineup.

Really, Volkswagen is hoping to build a utility vehicle that'll be able to compete with competitors with some off-road credibility like the Nissan Pathfinder. That level of full-size SUV will, when combined with this new pickup truck, be able to finally flesh out the VW team into a lineup with all the little bits and pieces needed to succeed in a global automotive environment. Still, given the brand's track record here in the US when it comes to profitability and sales, we're wondering if that level of brand expansion will give them the cojones they need to boost sales to a more "robust" level. Hah. We're so punny. Anyway, we shouldn't have to worry as we're not even sure the US will be a target market — we're hearing it's a little bit further South. Maybe they should call it the "Robusto."
