Remember that other German madman who wanted to "dominate" the world.
VW will go crashing down just like he did. Some people (I will not mention from what country) are not only egotistical, but stupid as well.
VW has proven one area they can dominate: high-priced, unreliable cars, not only from Mexico, but from the Faderland as well.
Not really mentioned here is that VW wants to made the new midsizer larger AND cheaper than the Passat. High on the list of cars I don't want is a Volkswagen Galant.
I like VW's, however I see some serious flaws in their future domination plans that need to be addressed first:
1. VW's are quite unreliable and known for it.
2. Smug advertising and image - while definitely working for a niche group, it's a turn off to unassuming folks who'd normally buy a Camry.
3. Price. Of entry, maintenance and parts costs.
4. Dealer network - both size and quality
I wish them luck, I'd love nothing more than for the Camry/Altima/Corolla bore brigade to be replaced with something that handles well, has an attractive well-built interior and interesting engineering solutions that VW is known for.
@Blue387: I agree, its retarded. You can't hang your arm out the window of most new cars these days.
Gotta have a ridiculously high window sill and door structure to provide substantial protection for possible side impacts from the god damned massive SUV's....
@omg grip: Hey, my Volvo 240 has crash bars in the doors. As for blind spots, what blind spots?
My arm spends quite a bit of time out the window.
EDIT: I replied again below, so this is now pointless and misplaced. I'd bitch about how this happened if I thought that the fuckbags responsible for maintaining Gawker would ever read it.
@superbadd75, with electrolytes!: The big question is whether the quality problems are the Mexico plant or if it's a company wide problem. The ratings of the Phaeton and Toureg don't really suggest that the problem is Mexico.
As I said in a comment page before, the Routan is probably the most dependable VW, and think about what THAT means.
@SagarikaLumos:
In Europe VW has a reputation as very reliable, although that reputation isn't as strong as it was 15-20 years ago. And (almost) all VWs here are European built.
@duurtlang: If Volkswagen is considered so reliable in Europe, then why did a 1994 issue of Car magazine (UK) have on its cover a photo of a lemon with a VW logo?
@tonyola: There is a difference between actual reliability en reputation.
And to use a completely pointless anecdote: my parents currently own a 250k 1991 VW Golf (mk 2), since 1993. In the 16 years they own it they had 1 problem besides regular maintenance; unexpected dead battery. They don't built them like they used to.
@tonyola: I see that you've conveniently left out their "Peach" issue, in which the Car magazine concedes that all problems with the subsequent models were rectified.
Make it a RWD pony car fighter with a manual tranny option, and they might have a chance... The key to success is to find a niche in the market that isn't yet satisfied. So far, BMW is the only euro company that has a contender in that category. But a slightly less luxurious and more affordable sedan could serve to raise a few eyebrows and open a few wallets...
Their tripled market share is a bit lofty though...
This is cool, and now that we're on the topic of Tranformers, how come nobody ever touched the all-spark to an aircraft carrier? Wouldn't that be one of the ultimate Transformers? And nuclear-powered at that.
Well, if you had read your industry breakdown, you would see that our
success in the action figure area has climbed from 27 percent to 45 percent in the last two years. There, that might help.

Oh.

Yes?
JOSH
I still don't get it.
PAUL
What?!
MR. M
What don't you get Josh?
JOSH
Well, there's a million robots that turn into something. And this is a Passat that turns into a robot. So what's so fun about playing with a Passat? That's not any fun!

I am, however, steering clear of fried butter, if we attend. Oh, and deep-fried Snickers is overrated.
Regardless of what it looks like in the teaser pics, just put a new front & rear fascia on the Passat, and you have reality.
