As to the styling, it looks to me like they went to the drawing boards and came away with a Malibu, minus the rear headroom. Way to go, VW!

So I went to MazdaUSA to see how this compared to the Speed6 and found:
1. there is no 2009 Speed6
2. the mileage for this is much better than the 2009 Speed3

I like VW's and very much like Audi's, but I bought Mazda6 and think the Mazda3 and 6 are better looking than this VW, totally humble opinion.

@MarywithanM: I agree on all aspects except the Mazda grille. It bugs me.

VW and Mazda are both in high esteem in my books. VW/Audi is making just a whole series of "holy crap, WOW!" engines, while Mazda is doing that with the whole rest of the car and giving them less inspiring engines. (Although the MazdaSpeed cars absolutely deserve respect!)

The 2.0T (and the 1.8T that preceded it) can sleep in my garage anytime, though.

@FuzzyPlushroom: Yes, I agree, but I feel that is the exception that proves the rule. That would be a great engine in so many other automakers' lineups, but with VW, it's rubbish.

I was thinking more of the RS6's twin-turbo V10, but as a 20V de-turboed Lysholm 1.8 is my next engine buildup over the next few years, I am forced to agree with you.

Gorgeous on the outside, but I would fear that the rear headroom must be severely compromised (like with the Benz CLS and the W211 rebody of the E-Class).

At 6'6", I value headroom highly (pun intended).

@Charles_Barrett - Now with Variable-Valve Timing: Personally, I wonder if it would be. Look at the beltline. It's designed to deceive the eye into thinking it's a straight line, when it actually swoops upwards at quite an angle, making it look a lot lower than it actually is. I'm just over 6'1", and I sat in the back of the XF with tons of headroom to spare.

@Deartháir: I've got to admit, the proof of the pudding is in the eating...! I haven't sat in the VW CC or the MBZ CLS, and I have a friend who bought the newer W211 E-Class (black-on-black like my W210), and SHE commented about the rear headroom in her car. She's a petite woman, so it can't have been first-hand experience (besides, who rides around in the back seat of their own car...?)

@Charles_Barrett - Now with Variable-Valve Timing: i would imagine so... compromised headroom isn't good.... unless there is a wagon option... compromised headroom can make people buy a wagon... worked for my parents!

300c's vertical glass caused my 6'2" brother (and the next one down... who was 5'11" at the time) to hit his head... so they bought a magnum... more or less exactly the same car.. but a lot more room in back...

granted... my dad has always been a wagon man... i grew up with GM wagons (olds, pontiac, chevy, buick-- i think we had them all..)... and then graduated to the suburban a.k.a. 'the fat-man's station-wagon'... but with a family of 7.. and early 90's wagon offerings not being so great... who can blame him..

You know, it's no secret I'm a VW/Audi fan. I like their designs, and even though I'm not completely nuts about the Gen V Jetta/Rabbit, they're still better-looking than a lot of other cars on the market.

But really, why put this engine in the Passat CC? It's a big car, and with all that weight, it's not going to show off the potential of the engine as well as it could. As it sits, it ends up only slightly better than the G8 GT. Driving it carefully on the highway, and letting the fuel management system work as much as possible, I got around 7L/100km, according to the on-board computer. That's 33 mpg, from a bigger car with more peak horsepower.

Now, if VW were to take this engine, and put it in, say, a two-door GTI, preferably with the R32 all-wheel-drive system...

good idea: i would appreciate getting 33mpg most of the time but having 300hp on call if i wanted it. i'm hoping changing modes is just a press of a button? anything to prevent this system from working with a proper manual?

@will: if the phrase 'german engineering' really means anything... i think it'll take 3 different sized proper (metric) wrenches, at least 2 types of screwdrivers (at least three, if including the drink), and well.. i know i've got that service manual somewhere around here...... damn..

don't get me wrong... love VAG (and VW too)

@layabout: The laterals on the lower front fascia are a little too large for symmetrical visual balance, otherwise I personally think this looks better than a Mercedes C or E class. I think you're getting a bit jaded, old man.

One of these days, North America will clue in to Europe, however, and jump on the friggin'-sexy-estate-car bandwagon. We're getting away from SUVs, officially, although calling them "crossovers" is mostly just marketing, to me. Now look at a wagon. RS6 Avant, anyone?

@eggwich del fiero: I would say that America is just just graduating from our SUV addiction (as leftist as that sounds) and realizing that yes, its ok to walk on our own, to buy small cars, that estate cars are the better option for all but those with big trailers and the occasional contractor/business operator, and that making funny poopey noises in front of women isn't a good thing. Oh, wait on that last one. . .

@Schm, Jalopnik election correspondent!: I may have overstepped myself here. I still stand by my ideal that Americans (And anyone) should be able to buy whatever they want, no matter how useless it is. Like paying a significant premium for a slightly more swoopy sedan. Logically, that makes no sense. But I know, that if I was in the market for a large VW saloon, and the Phaeton's on Ebay had mysteriously gone extinct, I know which I would be choosing. And Its not a Passat.

@Deartháir: estate cars & shooting brakes are made of pure win. hopefully the rest of "us" (US..) will agree sometime soon... they once thought so before.... and as we have seen over the last 10 years... the 70s and 80s have come back in fashion... ... clothing-wise...

i'm just waiting for the 40s-80s car style(offerings) to return....

shit... it's hard to get a japanese wagon here any more!!!

@Schm, Jalopnik election correspondent!: I have now driven two Phaetons. If I could find a decent W12 version of it, I would give up on waiting for a G8. My goodness they're amazing cars. Huge -- and I mean REALLY big -- but they handle like a Jetta. They're still nimble, lively, fun, and so comfortable it's scary.

Pity they suck back gas like an F350.

@chrystlubitshi: My first car was a hand-me-down Honda Accord wagon. Had it for about two months until my dad drove it off a cliff. I've had a major weakness for wagons and shooting brakes ever since. The main reason is that about three times a year, I need to haul something. The rest of the time, i need to haul people. I can comfortably fold four people into the Corrado if i need to, but they usually don't like me by the time we get to our destination. So a regular extended-cab pickup isn't a great option for me, but a wagon is perfect.

I might just have to look into an older AMG wagon...
