In reply to Swedish Sleepers, Part Two: The 500 HP Amazon
When I bought my Jaguar XJS ($900!) last summer, the seller (Larry) had in his garage the greatest greatest ghett0-engineered Volvo 544 ever. He had spray-bombed it, and sawz-all'd the top off. I didn't look, but knowing the rest of the car I'm pretty confident the idea of chassis-bracing never really occurred to him. Now comes the crescendo, the piece de resistance, a moment I was wholly unprepared for. Under the hood lurked the single greatest B18 there could ever be. No, it didn't put out 500 horsepower, it didn't need to. A single carburetor fed a Garret turbo (don't ask me what kind, I was too in awe to ask). Said turbo was then hooked up to a jerry-rigged intake manifold with welds like candle drips. Old radiator tubing tied the whole operation together both for the engine and my heart.

I bought that Jag out of respect for him more than anything else, really. #volvo

The driver seems a little ... jerky. Maybe he should work on his stretches and shoulder rolls. The car going left-right-left-right on the forest road seemed to be due to driver input and not from rear traction troubles. #volvo

    I approve. It's a B20... I mean; 120HP is basically 500, right? At some point you're just being greedy. #volvo

@AustinMiniMan: Was that SAE net or gross?

500 is a bit over the top, but with some very simple mods even the lowly B18 plant can churn out triple-digit power and sub-10 second 0-60 times. A B20 swap is as simple as changing your shirt, and yields a bit more power and gobs (relatively speaking) more low end, usable torques. #volvo

@Volvonaut: It doesn't have enough ticking coming from the valves to be a B** in my opinion. Volvo's make a lot of noise from the valves; it's pretty distinctive. But I suppose with any amount of exhaust and forced aspiration you can make anything sound like anything. #volvo

I have a question - do all these spare parts fall under the $500 rule? I mean, having whole spare engines seems more like traditional racing to me (ie. big budget), which doesn't really fall under the heading of LeMons, in my opinion.

@Jeremy Wilson: Not when you buy parts cars for scrap value (or less; I bought a scrap volvo amazon for 1 cent once, on eBay). We're not talking new, fresh, replacements. We're talking "barely better than the crap we just took out" spares.

When it gets that major, you're really out of the competitive running anyway. It's mostly for glory/bragging rights/masochism.
