Actually, this looks pretty good, but I am against the unceasing embiggening of grilles that seems to be working its way through every model on the market these days, so I have to be against the restyle on principle.

I'd take the Mazda III because it's not horrendously over-priced. I looked at the c30 then it first came out, and the only really good looking ones were close to or above $30k, got shitty gas mileage and didn't have all that much power.....

The vanilla C30 has the black plastic body lowers which don't look as good as the R-design's color matched or contrasting bodykit. Particularly on light colored cars, the R-design does look better. But on a dark car, the vanilla C30 still looks good.

As for the hundreds of thousands of configurations from the factory - why? Honda has it right in that aspect. Offer a stripper (please!), a mid-range with power stuff, a top level with power stuff and a sunroof, and then the premier level with leather, 'roof, and all the other hoo-hah. You don't need thousands of variants to sit on lots and collect dust (and get flat-spots on the tires, need complete fluid changes, etc.). An assortment of 4 or 5 packages in several colors will capture all the business you need to. Or even better, a Scion approach of dealer added options might even be better.

You can get a "stripper" C30 that you seem to be longing for. You may have to order it or search hard for it-- it seems most dealers didn't order as many without all the fixings as they ordered with all the goodies.
A lot of the options can be added by the dealer, though they tend to cost a little more that way.

I really liked driving the car, but not only was the price an issue, but the options in an 'a-la-carte' fashion was really annoying.
Even though I ended up with an VW R32 for 5k less (and a bit more car) the C30 still catches my eye when I (rarely) see one.

The front is not an improvement, imo. They did tweak the rear a tad-- the edges beneath the tail-lights, just above the level of the plate, now go down toward the middle (echoing the nose). they used to be horizontal.

They are way too excited about the new "exterior features." "Increased its visual volume" = looks bigger. Next time someone asks me if I've gained weight, I'm going to say no, I've just increased my 'visual volume.'
And the other hot flashes are, it comes in orange and you can see the tailpipe.
I fear that this excess, plus the choice for white wheels, means that Volvo plans to go head to head with the Ricer and Donk market. They are becoming hep cats, Daddy-o-- jump back!
