    This is the Karmann Ghia VW's needed. It looks good, the interior looks friendly and comfortable, the performace is well more than adequate.


    I doubt it will steal many sales from the Boxster, due to the diesel and lower performance envelope. Even if it did, Porsche owns VW and they'll likely sell 10x as many of these as Boxsters, so it will work out alright.


    It may cut into the New Beetle Cabrio and EOS sales substantially, but those cars have back seats...

    Absolutely breathtaking.


    Diesel. For realistic mileage and long-term fuel availablity.

    Mid-engined. For handling as the gods intended.

    Manual. For exercising both hands and both feet while driving.

    Convertible. To tan my forehead in the winter sun.


    THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!


    I will buy one of the first off the assembly line.

    Build it. It looks nice. Put a nice petrol (The family 2.0 liter should do, but leave diesel as an option), price it VERY reasonably, and ba da bing! Great success.

    0-60 in 6.2 isn't bad at all for a diesel. That's faster than a current Miata by a bit. It's about the same as the current GTI, which is gas.


    Pretty cool, all told. I'm guessing the "transmission in front" thing is a misunderstanding or mistranslation.

    @dculberson: I translated the (Swedish) website that is referenced, and I saw no reference to the drive layout, other than mid-engined. Therefore the information came from another source. I am curious to learn more.

    They need to make it, and sell it at a sane price. I like this a lot, lousy fuel economy be damned.


    Oddly, the design reminds me a lot of the late MR-2, but sharpened and refined (i.e., un-Toyota'ed). It's a very handsome car.


    However, I also wonder about the wacky drivetrain arrangement.

    The gearbox is up front? Does that mean front wheel drive? Even if it's all wheel drive, putting the gearbox in the front seems to mean unnecessary complication. If it's rear wheel drive, you can definitely color me confused.
