What's the difference between the GTI and the GLI? I thought the GLI was the 4 door, the GTI the 2 door. #vwgti

So Motor Trend picks Subaru Outback, Automobile pics the GTI. What does that leave us consumer focused publications? Camaro SS? #vwgti

It's certainly a neat car and VW does a very nice job with overall feel, design, quality and use of materials. I think Japanese cars in the GTI's range have gotten rather ugly in their desperate attempt to stand out. And the quality of materials used inside has declined over the past decade or two.

But to call it Automobile of the Year seems to be overrated to me. I suppose the GTI is more relevant in Europe than it is in the US, hence the award. #vwgti

Car & Driver just ranked the GTI over the MS3 as well, even with the power deficit. The only thing that would make me hesitant about the GTI is VW's reliability issues that were resounding a few years back. I'm not sure if those are resolved yet. #vwgti

@Jeb_Hoge: 73,000 miles with only gas and oil. I've found my 07 reasonably reliable.

The local Mazda shop couldn't be bothered to provide a test drive.

The absence of torque steer despite all the midrange pull makes a compelling case for the GTI. #vwgti

I was still in the midst of my misspent youth as an automotive journalist when the Mk5 came out, and when I opined that the Mazda/Speed3 was better looking and had better steering feel and the only reason why everyone was so ga-ga over the Golf/GTI was due to leather/high-end plastics poisoning, I might as well have had bats flying out of my ears. You can't go wrong with either, but man, they're acting like this thing is the best thing since...since the MK1? C'mon. #vwgti

It is convenient that press coverage would appear a week before a new season.

It's easy, find the nearest pommy whinger who doesn't know their own stupidity and feel that the rest of the country is dumber than themselves and need to be told what's safe. Show them the old clip, get them to complain (the only thing they can do with competence) and voilà, instant press coverage!

I feel for Britain and her people who are suppressed by the safety nanny Nazi's.

What needs to happen is they need to research and find out what really is dangerous. Like experiments such throwing a safety Nazi into a wood-chipper and see if the thrower needs to wear goggles. That kind of thing. #topgear

In Australia VW's are more expensive and less value for money than a Toyota. If Wolfsburg can change this around, then I'll believe that VW will continue to be on top for a very long time. #volkswagen

Doesn't Ofcom understand? This ad gives us all hope. Hope, that despite Gordon Brown still being in number 10, that BNP has supporters, that each and every Briton paid £3000 to a charity called Goldman Sachs, and Tony Blair becoming even more powerful by becoming the whole damn president of the EU without actually being elected,

there is still the Scirocco TDI. Life's not so bad. #topgear
