    College buddy Brian had a 411 back in 1981-82. Brian would wear those canvas Van deck shoes, and there was a fuel leak behind the dash board that would drip gasoline onto his left foot. We all agreed that smoking anything in or near Brian's car or left foot was not a good idea... #volkswagentype3

    @Murilee Martin: When I was in college, my phone number had only a one-digit difference from the radio station's concert information line. There's nothing like being pulled out of a sound sleep at 2am by an anonymous drunk who won't believe he dialed the wrong number.

    We were fairly tolerant of the calls that came during normal waking hours, and would politely provide those callers with the correct phone number. The belligerent late night callers got a special treat, though.

    The callers would of course assume my roommate and I were radio station employees. We would tell the caller that we had one pair of tickets left for whatever the next upcoming show happened to be, and that we had to give those tickets away before the end of the shift. If the caller could swing by the station in the next two hours, they could have the tickets. We would tell them that the station was pretty deserted after hours, so they would need to bang on the door loudly and make lots of noise to gain entry.

    I suggest you inform the people who contact you trying to buy parts from these long-gone cars that these never belonged to you, but that more information may be available if they contact Dr. Altoye Obiwankenobe. Dr. Obiwankenobe is the director of foreign salvage export in Kumo, Nigeria, who is tasked with keeping quality marques from going to the landfill. Upon confirming the person's banking information, arrangements might be made to ship the whole car (at the Nigerian government's expense) to the person so requesting it, allow them remove any parts they need, and have them arrange for disposal of the remainder through a qualified salvage facility. As a token of appreciation, they will be allowed to keep a commission of 20% of the salvage value. Of course, these transactions must be kept strictly confidential. #volkswagentype3

    There used to be a sedan one of these around the corner--in the unavoidable pale blue--with the tiny rear deck and everything. I really, really wanted that. Looked much better than the square back. To me. #volkswagentype3

    @Novaload: Nice. The notchbacks were always my favorite. Interestingly, they still had the pancake engine, covered up, which allowed the rear to have a second trunk. Practical, yet complete nonsense: the German way! #volkswagentype3

    @Novaload: Those notchbacks were pretty cool, though never officially imported by VW. My friend found one in nice shape.

    @Novaload: The problem is that they never believe me- they think I'm holding out on them, just for spite.

    The worst one yet was the junked '72 Vista Cruiser from a few months back. Someone must have posted it on a Vista Cruiser forum, because I have a half-dozen guys alternately pleading and threatening over that car. Some of them are on their 15th email by now. My patriotism is being questioned, because obviously the Vista Cruiser represents America. #volkswagentype3

    I believe that's probably a euro spec version because it _is_ carbureted (the US versions got EFI from '69), amber rear signals, lack of side reflectors in the front signals.
