By forgoing LA, they've missed out on 75% of their potential market.

This is more like it,they should have pushed this through ahead of the let down of the Scirocco, this will sell plenty.

Only VW could manage to make a mid engined roadster boring. I'm not looking forward to this.

So, an MR2 that's [probably] twice as expensive, and half as reliable? WHERE CAN I SIGN UP?

And everyone and their dog will criticise it, and say that VW is idiotic, and has no idea what they are doing. And VW/Porsche will just quietly continue to make stupidly exorbitant amounts of money. Do they care if it flops? Probably not. It's most likely just being previewed to make some competitor shit its drawers. VW has a habit of doing things like this just to prove that they can do it just as well -- if not better -- than any competitor. The Corrado, the Passat, the Superb, the Phaeton, the R8, the Veyron; all rolled out with a "hey, look what we can do too!" mentality.

Okay, jaded fanboy rant over. But they have all the required parts across their various brands to make this a seriously, frighteningly good car, and likely for a very reasonable price. Nobody does inter-brand engineering like VW.

I could see a case for a V6 or 2.0T powered mid-engined VW drop top.

Either drop a FWD powertrain behind the seats (a-la MR2 and Fiero) or hook a "lesser" engine up to various R8/Lambo parts.

VW does an awesome job of parts-bin engineering.

No way VW can build something that good looking.

Also, I dunno that this is really the season for roadsters.

Also, there's still a Detroit auto show? Seems a little optimistic (or I'm just too pessimistic. I'm losing perspective like GM shares are losing value).

@Bumblebee: No place or time better than Detroit in January to launch a fun-loving imported convertible.

What's next? Dodge launching the next-gen Power Wagon in Paris?

@Parkington: True, but how does the engine get air for all those thousands of explosions every minute? From underneath? Seems like a bad place to take in air. Maybe only on the left side?
