We joke about the Volga now, but when you compare it with most other 1956 European sedans, it looks pretty up to date. Until the mid 1960s or so, the Soviets made a fairly brave effort to keep up with styling trends. It wasn't until the Brezhnev era that the really serious stagnation set in.
