The red MG with the union jack bonnet (hood) looks a lot like the one that was nearly totalled by a kid rolling his SUV into the driveway (IIRC) - is it the same one? I can't find the original story now, but I'm fairly sure it was here on Jalopnik...

@brrm: That's the one. The picture's from last year's rally, but I have it on good authority that that MGB-GT will be resurrected fairly soon.

    Nice pictures, eastbaykid.

Attentive observers will notice my Sunbeam Alpine in exactly one of these pictures. It's a funny story. See, I spent countless hours getting the car ready for the Snowball Rally. I welded a patch into the floor, then painted and sealed everything; I changed all the fluids, flushed the radiator, took it on a few shakedown runs. Everything seemed to be okay. Better than okay, even-- the Alpine was running beautifully, and a slightly different exhaust gave it a nice growl. So I was really excited as the rally organizer waved me off at the start.

I got about fifteen feet before a new, unpleasant noise started coming from under the hood. My beloved Alpine had decided this was a good time to eat its fucking generator.

The Alpine was hors de combat, but I was allowed to bring my daily driver along instead, and I still had a great time on the rally. And on the second morning, I got some masking tape and a Sharpie and turned my BMW into an Alpine, too:

I'm already counting the days to the 2010 Snowball Rally. And I have a new generator.

@Armand: I guess I should stop using Lucas's image-hosting technology. Let me try putting up a picture of my too-clever-by-half Sunbeam-BMW again.

@.thrfvsvn gt Brbrry bnhmmrd: You're going to have to be more specific. There was a stunning silver '59 356A, a stunning blue '63 356C, and a stunning white-and-orange '67 911S. All were very, very nice.

I am so jealous I can't even talk about it.

Why can't traffic look like this anymore? Why can't we have cars with this much divine design anymore?

@Novaload Misses Murilee: I share your lament. And until car designers/makes do their part, do your part: find a PCH and get it back on the road!

    El Dorado County.

One of the things I miss about CA is the cool county names. Kings, Imperial, Alpine, Sierra, Napa, El Dorado, etc.

Here in GA we have names like Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Cobb, Coffee, Dooly, Early.... and we haven't gotten to the F's. Way too many with far too dorky names.

Nope, and I'll never forget Glascock and Hancock, Bacon and Macon counties down here.

Although Bacon County has a nice, breakfasty ring to it.

@Uncle Bo, piston forger: Ugh, Georgia. Even if the job paid twice as much as I'm making now, there would be no way I'd relocate to Georgia, though there's a lot of bargain homes up for sale right now.

I turned down an offer in Columbia, SC, after the Human Resources officer ask me what Church I'd be going to. And that was after I reluctantly accepted the position. Right after that question, I politely said that I've changed my mind, and that I have other opportunities closer to where I live.

Is it so wrong to enjoy these cars and participants over the cars and participants of that damn Gumball rallye? These cars are genuine, those are movie props. These participants are real enthusiasts, the ones in the gumball rallye are cartoon characters. These people are down to earth, the others are full of themselves.

@UDMan: No, nothing wrong with it at all. This is 100x better than even the real life incarnations of Gumball. This is tangible, the cars and people far cooler.

@UDMan: If you keep talking about Snowball Rally participants that way, eventually we'll become full of ourselves, too. Hell, my car's only in one picture ([jalopnik.com]) and I've decided to start introducing myself to people as an "internet celebrity."
