Future archeologists will write lengthy academic papers trying to explain this ancient cemetery. The term "V8" will figure prominently.

Perhaps they all drowned, trying to cross the river?

    ...and that's a mid-'90s F150. What's that doing there?

The one remaining un-rusted-out '80s Mitsubishi pickup... a flatnose Econoline... an early Ranger next to an early GMT400 Sierra... along with a couple '60s Fords. And an Isuzu Amigo... what's THAT doing there? The trucks are the weird part, though the cars (including half of New England's early Mustangs, plus a '79-'82 Fox-body) are cooler.

Wait, that's an early L-body (024/Charger) hatchback! Holy shit! I don't think I've ever seen one of those on the road. And a solid '58 Dodge Royal... then, a 10-year-old Taurus, just to confuse us.

@DannyBN: Opel GT was my first thought, too. When I compared your pic with the above-referenced one, I was suddenly much less sure.

This is why we need the government to run our lives. So that they can tell us what we can and cannot keep on our property.

Seriously, I understand the hazzards of crap draining into the ground, but after 30-odd years, I imagine most of the anti-freeze, oil, battery acid and gasoline that was going to pollute the earth has already done so. Why do they have to go and pull a Big Brother on this poor guy?

He _really_ needs to find homes for these cars. Murilee's 1000-acre Wyoming PCH Car Ranch would be a good place...

It is easy to look at some of these cars and think that is a suitable restoration project (much like project car hell can be).

But you could buy similar cars in this state of decrepitude cheaply on e bay.

Unless you are prepared to put in the time AND have the requisite sheet metal and welding skills, then a restoration is not going to be economical viable.

(I have tried doing sheet metal work and welding, unfortunately I failed miserably on both counts).

    @rocor: Restoration is overrated.

My Rhode Island Wilderness Mustang Recovery Plan Act of 2008:

--Sell the high-value VINs to the numbers-matching cult.

--Next, I'll set about breaking down the remaining cars to their constituent parts: axles, blocks, heads, body shells, transmissions, etc.

--Using the cash infusion from the sale, I'll set to rebuilding/refurbing as many kickass drivers as I can from the good parts and a massive Jegs order.

End result will be environmental cleanup, cultural preservation and a massive stimulus to our flagging small business and manufacturing economies.

And I'll only need a bridge loan of $1 billion to get going...

Lots of cool old cars, but, alas, allowed to rot.

The owner of the property should be heavily fined for allowing chromium, lead and other nasty stuff to leach into the soil over 30-40 years, but I guess he should get some brownie points for allowing some trees to grow in between them all.

That's kind of creepy, it's like there's a serial killer who only preys on Mustang drivers, and this is where he disposes of the evidence. The lack of Mustang IIs indicates that even serial killers have taste.

    Quietly walking through the forest,

The ghosts of the past surround you.

Sitting, waiting for a salvation which may never come.

Thoughts of moonlit nights and winding roads,

Mix with the memory of engines at full song.

    Step lightly,

and leave the warriors to their slumber.
